Ben Stiller Movies: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Without giving it much thought, I promised my son and his friend a trip to the movies. They are both 14.

No problem? Well my husband and I wanted to join them - so the battle of wits began! We had to decide on a film that would entertain us all! This is a generation gap issue and Star Wars was not showing anywhere!

After a great deal of discussion, and almost giving up on the whole idea, we finally settled on the new Ben Stiller movie, ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’, mainly because the 1947 Danny Kaye version was brilliant and we thought the boys would enjoy this great story.

My husband did a great sales pitch and so they were persuaded to at least give it a chance.

We had an absolutely brilliant time so now I have to tell you about it!

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is very entertaining because takes you on a real adventure! It is full of feel-good factor and leaves you seriously yearning to go travelling. It forces you to build your dream and make it the next thing you will achieve! Or it forces you to regretfully remember the dream that you long ago abandoned. This depends on what stage of life you are at.

This was absolutely perfect for our boys, and they laughed and dreamed. The film is aimed at an adult audience, because essentially it deals with someone struggling to keep his livelihood and struggling to live in the real world. But this hit a nerve with our teenagers too, because they could relate to that, after all they too spend most of their days worrying about school and dreaming about the better things they could be doing!

Ben Stiller’s performance so very convincing, in fact he really knows how to get under your skin, we all empathized because of his ability to make you feel every emotion with him. For example, you share his panic at having to find a photograph that he was never given, you sympathize with his fear of clicking on the dating agency's ‘wink’ button to contact the woman he has fallen in love with, and you applaud his determination to be treated with respect by the company he has served for 16 years.

The Cinematography is Absolutely Breathtaking

Don't let the fact that you may already know the story put you off watching this version. You may already know that the story is enchanting, so what makes this film great? The cinematography - it's absolutely breathtaking.

Fantastic Special Effects

There spectacular and unexpected special effects too. You just cannot predict what will happen next. Mitty changes from a character with absolutely no sense of worth and a self esteem at rock bottom, to a handsome hero in the space f a few seconds, which certainly kept me entertained.

This Alone is Worth the Ticket Price!

The film is so beautiful to watch, and this made it a very special experience for our boys:

We are airlifted from New York to Greenland, and then on to Iceland, where Mitty is thrown into icy shark infested seas and narrowly escapes an erupting volcano, and then we're finally taken to the stunning scenery of the Himalayas. These scenes are beautifully filmed and they make you want to go there straight from the cinema.

When we came out both boys had a spring in their step, and were planning a trip round the world!

I loved the very romantic scene when Mitty dreams up the beautiful woman he has fallen in love with and she sings David Bowie's ‘Space Oddity’, giving him the courage to jump onto a helicopter that is being flown by an extremely drunk pilot. The music in the film is used very effectively all the way through.

My son particularly enjoyed the skateboarding scene, where Walter Mitty ties a couple of rocks to his hands and speeds along an open meandering road in Iceland.

Here's the trailer:

Ben Stiller movies are usually slapstick, which isn't really my kind of thing, but this works very very well in this film. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty employs a subtle, gentle humor that helps make Mitty someone we can relate to.

He is uncomfortable in social situations, is bullied by his loathsome new boss, lacks the confidence to ask the woman of his dreams for a date, and ultimately loses his job. He is the underdog!

Yet despite all this, he manages to transport you to a world of hope and possibilities that can only leave you feeling uplifted and optimistic about life.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a truly wonderful film. Don’t miss it at the cinema or you can order it now on Amazon. Make sure your teens see it too.
