Fruits Basket Anime Series

Everything you want to know about Fruits Basket

This is my lens dedicated to my favorite anime series, Fruits Basket. I decided to make a lens that had most of the things that I would like to find on an anime series in one place, such as, character bios, pictures, videos, and an episode guide. I have put a good bit of research into this lens and I hope that you can enjoy it as much as I do.

The Story Behind Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket follows the life of high-school student Tohru Honda, who was recently orphaned when her mother, Kyoko Honda, died in a car accident. After that, Tohru lived with her grandfather, but when his house needs remodeling, Tohru resorts to living in a tent in a forest and holds down a job to support herself. Despite suffering many hardships, Tohru remains optimistic.

One day, Tohru comes upon a house in the forest that is the home of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousin Shigure Sohma. When the Sohmas discover that Tohru is living in a tent, they are quite surprised by her inner strength. The entire area is Sohma property, and Tohru asks to be allowed to stay in her tent (affectionately dubbed "her castle"). Feeling sorry for her and desperate to end their bachelor days of filthy living conditions, the Sohmas offer her their spare room in exchange for cooking and housework. After a landslide buries her tent, including her mother's picture and school clothes, she has no option but to accept. Soon after she moves in, Kyo Sohma comes to challenge Yuki.

Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family's secret, and the reason why Yuki is so private and secretive at school: thirteen members of the family are possessed by the 12 animal spirits of the Chinese Zodiac (junish in Japanese) plus the spirit of the cat who was, according to legend, left out of the Zodiac. They transform into animals when hugged by the opposite sex or when put under a great deal of emotional or physical stress (such as being sick). When she promises to keep their secret, the Sohmas allow Tohru to keep her memories rather than hypnotically erasing them, a fate that had previously befallen anyone not "Inside" the Sohma family who had discovered the secret.

The story follows the lives of Tohru and the Sohma family, as they deal with each other and a society where neither quite fits in, as well as the feared Akito Sohma, head of the Sohma family. Soon, after living with the Sohma family she began to like, then love, all of the Sohmas, and sets out to break the zodiac curse.

Character symbol: rice ball

Bio: Tohru is a very kind girl who is always looking on the bright side of everything. Despite the attitude anyone else shows her, she always shows kindness. She is usually very deep in thought, and due to this fact, she is very clumsy. Before she met the Sohma family she was living in a tent on what she didn't know was their property. Tohru has had a pretty rough life, but doesn't show it around people. She loves to help people. Tohru Honda is a hopelessly optimistic school girl whose goal in life is to fulfill her mother's dream of finishing high school. She struggles to keep the Souma curse a secret, and to please the other family members.

Shigure Sohma

Name: Shigure Sohma

Alias: Gure

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Dog

Age: 27 years old

Hair: black

Eyes: brown

Height 5' 10"

Weight: 151 lbs

Status: Novelist

English voice: John Burgmeier

Bio: Shigure is the older cousin and guardian of Yuki and Kyo. Although he's a bit mischievous and prone to kidding around a lot, he's very keen to the feelings of the other Sohmas and will always try to help out in his own way. At 27 years old, Shigure is one of the oldest members of the Sohma family. A writer, Shigure is an easy going, all around nice guy who enjoys interacting in the lives of his younger family members. He is a good listener with a keen sense of right and wrong. Shigure is able to keep the most private of secrets, and will never let anyone down. Shigure's best friends are Hatori Sohma and Ayame Sohma. This trio has been friends since their childhood. Together their nickname is the Mabudachi Trio. While Ayame and Shigure get along very well, it's less certain how Hatori, who is always exasperated with them, became their friend.

Yuki Sohma

Name: Yuki Sohma

Alias: Prince Yuki

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Rat

Age: 16 years old

Hair: Grey

Eyes: Purple

Height: 5' 7"

Weight: 119 lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "Stupid Cat."

English Voice: Eric Vale

Bio: Yuki is a mysterious, smart, beautiful boy that almost everyone likes. Hiding behind a cool exterior, Yuki actually yearns for a normal life without hidden secrets and mysterious curses. Yuki may seem confident and fearless, but he has a scarred past that hides in the crevices of his fears. Yuki Sohma is the most popular guy at Kaibara Highschool. He even has his own fan club, which is rumored to consists of over half the girls at school. Yuki is very polite and kind towards other, but he claims to act like that so people could like him. Yuki's rival is the cat, Kyo Sohma. Yuki envies Kyo, who isn't stuck inside "that Sohma cage", so Yuki gets annoyed whenever Kyo talks about becoming one of the zodiac. Yuki appears to be better then Kyou in everything he does. They constantly fight each other over some of the silliest things.

Kyo Sohma

Name: Kyo Sohma

Alias: Kyo-Kyo, Orange Top

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Cat

Age: 16 years old

Hair: Orange

Eyes: Reddish-brown

Height: 5' 7"

Weight: 123.5 lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "Damn Rat"

English Voice: Jerry Jewell

Bio: Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he transforms into a cat. Kyo is really sensitive, so he is very easily angered.

He doesn't belong to the Chinese Zodiac exactly. In the story, the rat (Yuki Sohma) tricked the cat into thinking the banquet for the animals was a different day. In result, Kyo has never been treated like a true member of the Sohmas. It also means he cannot attend the Zodiac Banquet, just like in the story. Since the cat didn't attend the banquet, Kyo must always wear his red and white beads so he doesn't turn into the Cat's Evil Spirit (the red are supposedly colored with sacrificed blood and all the beads are made of bone). The Cat's Evil Spirit is what built up after the Cat realized he had been fooled. The Evil Spirit is Kyo's true form, and it is hideous. But Tohru somehow managed to get through to him, after much heartache, though.

Kagura Sohma

Name: Kagura Sohma

Gender: Female

Zodiac animal: Boar

Age: 18 years old

Hair: Dark Brown

Eyes: Grey

Height: 5' 3"

Weight: 112.4 lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "Kyooooo- My Love!"

English Voice: Meredith McCoy

Bio: Kagura Sohma is an interesting character. She is the boar of the zodiac and has extreme mood swings. Almost too extreme, like bipolar. Not only that, but like a real boar she has a one track mind.

When Kagura Sohma enters Fruits Basket she shows her sweet and innocent side. This all changes when she sees the love of her life, Kyo. Seeing him for the first time in four months, she runs to him so happily asking him questions and nearly in tears. She screams "I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!", and then proceeds to beat him into a bloody pulp, breaking down doors in the house. After that, she changes her mood yet again and cries to Kyo "who did this to you my love?" Kyo is not so affectionate to her, but she tries her best to make him happy... and messes up all of it to be Kyo's future wife. Kagura so badly wants to prove her love to Kyo that she carries a cat shaped bag with her always.

Momiji Sohma

Name: Momiji Sohma

Alias: Momitchi

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Rabbit

Age: 15 years old

Hair: Blond

Eyes: Brown

Height: 5' 1

Weight: 104.7lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "Wah-ah-ah! Kyo-o's picking on me-e!"

English Voice: Kimberly Grant

Bio: Momiji is a very energetic boy. He immediately likes Tohru, and wants to be her friend. He is always crying because Kyo picks on him. Despite acting sort of childish, Momiji is a very nice kid. He's part German and part Japanese, and he constantly switches between the two languages naturally

Those possessed by the Sohma curse are born two months early. This alone put a great amount of pressure on Momiji's mother, and to make things worse, when she tried to hold him he transformed. After this, Momiji's mother "broke". She was unable to smile, and she would snap when ever she saw him. It became so bad that they had to erase her memory. Momiji believed that, no matter how awful a memory is, it shouldn't be erased, but in order to help his mother recover, he agreed to have Hatori erase her memories. Afterwards, his mother recovered, and Momiji was not allowed to see her or his little sister Momo. His mother knows that he is part of the Sohma family, but believes he is someone else's son. Because she is not supposed to know him, he watches both Momo and his mother from afar. Despite his awful past, he's a very perky young boy.

Hatori Sohma

Name: Hatori Sohma

Alias: Ha'ri

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Dragon/Seahorse

Age: 27 years old

Hair: Black

Eyes: Green

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 152.1 lbs

Status: Doctor

Quote: "Tell me...When the snow melts, what does it become?"

English Voice: Kent Williams

Bio: When Akito decides that a person is to have their memory erased in order to protect the Sohma secret, Hatori is the man to do it. The Sohma curse has caused Hatori much pain in the past, and he only wishes that anyone outside the family stay away from the secret that could ruin their life. Naturally suspicious of others, Hatori's zodiac animal is the dragon (seahorse).

Hatsuharu Sohma

Name: Hatsuharu Sohma

Alias: Haru, Black Haru, White Haru

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Cow

Age: 15 years old

Hair: Black and White

Eyes: Grey

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 126.8 lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "You still can't beat Yuki, now can you loser?"

English Voice: Justin Cook

Bio: Hatsuharu Sohma is one of the most interesting characters in Fruits Basket. Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he transforms into a cow. Haru has developed a split personality. The good side of him is "White Haru", the calmer, kinder, lazier, and less arrogant side. The bad side is "Black Haru", who is arrogant, rude, and rather violent. Even the smallest problem can trigger his black personality. His attitude change all started when he was little. He held a grudge against Yuki. People in his family always made fun of him about how the cow was stupid and let the rat used him. This made him mad, so mad that he developed a black personality. He soon had forgiven Yuki after he got to know him.

Haru is mostly seen wearing rockish attire, like biker clothes. Sadly, he only rides a bicycle because he's not old enough to ride a motorcycle. Haru is bisexual, as Haru does indeed like Yuki. He explained that to Tohru when Yuki got sick, stating that Yuki was "His first love."

Ayame Sohma

Name: Ayame Sohma

Alias: Aya

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Snake

Age: 27 years old

Hair: White

Eyes: Gold/Yellow

Height: 5' 9"

Weight: 152.1 lbs

Status: Shop Owner

Quote: "What's the matter? You all look so surprised!"

English Voice: Christopher Sabat

Bio: Ayame is Yuki's older brother, but they are nothing alike. When embraced by the oposite gender, Ayame transforms into a snake. Ayame is much louder than Yuki, not to mention much more sure of himself. He is also egotistical and over-dramatic. He thinks that he is the most charming person in the world. Ayame tells Tohru all about how he was never really around Yuki all that much when they were growing up. Yuki was a very sick child so they were separated much of their youth. The separation created a barrier between the two brothers that has never been fixed.

Kisa Sohma

Name: Kisa Sohma

Gender: Female

Zodiac animal: Tiger

Age: 12 years old

Hair: Orange

Eyes: Brown

Height: 4' 9"

Weight:70.5 lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "Sissy!"

English Voice: Kate Bristol

Bio: Kisa Sohma is a very shy girl. When we first meet her she does not speak due to being teased at school. When hugged by a member of the opposite gender she transforms into a tiger. Kisa becomes very close to Tohru and begins speaking again because of her. Kisa follows Tohru around whenever they are together. Kisa's secret admirer is Hiro Sohma.

Hiro Sohma

Name: Hiro Sohma

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Sheep/Ram

Age: 12 years old

Hair: Blond

Eyes: Brown

Height: 4' 11"

Weight:83.8 lbs

Status: Cursed

Quote: "You could at least say thank you or something! Geez!"

English Voice: Aaron Dismuke

Bio: Hiro is the only zodiac member that does not like Tohru at all. He is Kisa's best friend, and he even has a crush on her. Hiro seems to have no motivation to do anything to fix the anger that he causes. Since Kisa likes Tohru, Hiro becomes incredibly jealous over her. Sometimes it seems like all he wants to do is boss Tohru around. It doesn't change much until Tohru realizes that he is going through a stage where he realizes that he is still young, and Tohru understands that it's scary to come to that realization. When Hiro is hugged by a member of the opposite gender he transforms into a sheep.

Ritsu Sohma

Name: Ritsu Sohma

Gender: Male

Zodiac animal: Monkey

Age: 20-21 years old

Hair: Light Brown

Eyes: Brown

Height: 5' 9"

Weight:130.1 lbs

Status: Cursed/Junior at a University

Quote: "I'M SO SORRY!"

English Voice: Mike McFarland

Bio: Ritsu was born with the curse of the sign of the monkey. As far back as he could remember, his parents always had to apologize for everything he did, so he is very unsure of himself. He feels that every day, he is robbing the world of its air by breathing.

He found that it always made him feel more comfortable to dress like a girl, but that only gave his parents even more to apologize for. Since he looks so much like a girl, that's what Tohru thought when she first saw him, until he accidently transformed. Somehow, Tohru convinced him that he does have a reason to live, he just hasn't found it yet.

Akito Sohma

Name: Akito Sohma

Gender: Male

Age: 19 years old

Hair: Plum

Eyes: Dark Teal

Height: 5' 4"

Weight:94.8 lbs

Status: Head of Sohma Household

Quote: "You will suffer as we suffer."

English Voice: Chad Cline

Bio: Akito Sohma is the head of the Sohma household. Although he does not transform, he believes he has something to do with being god. When he comes to learn about Tohru Honda he decides to accept her and lets her in on the Sohma secret.

Akito seems like a demented person that has many problems. He gets sick easily, he has an uncontrollable temper, he's a control freak, and doesn't understand much about life. The things known about him are that he is basically evil and doesn't want anyone in the Sohma family who has the curse to really ineract with anyone outside.

In the past he has abused Yuki Sohma by whipping him at a young age. He also made Hatori Sohma go blind in one eye, causing him to lose his love. He demands that everyone respects him and follows him.

Fruits Basket Wall Scrolls

Here are some great Fruits Basket wall scrolls. If you aren't familiar with wall scrolls, they are pretty much a giant cloth poster.

So, What's Your Sign?

Year of the Rat - 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

People born in the Year of the Rat are noted for their charm and attraction for the opposite sex. They work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists. Rat people are usually considered aggressive, ambitious, suspicious, and power-hungry, honest, generous, quick to anger and prone to spend freely. Those born under the sign of Rat are imaginative, charming, and truly generous to the one they love. However, they have a tendency to be hot-tempered and overly critical. Their ambitions are big, and they are usually very successful.

Year of the Cow (ox) - 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

People born in the Year of the Ox are patient, speak little, and inspire confidence in others. They tend, however, to be eccentric, and bigoted, and they anger easily. They have fierce tempers and although they speak little, when they do they are quite eloquent. Ox people are mentally and physically alert. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed. The Ox is a symbol of powerful individuals with unyielding and stubborn personalities. Those born under the sign are natural born leaders who typically succeed when given the chance.

Year of the Tiger - 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

Tiger people are sensitive, given to deep thinking, capable of great sympathy. They can be extremely short-tempered, however. Other people have great respect for them, but sometimes tiger people come into conflict with older people or those in authority. As the fighting animal, those born under tiger's sign are sensitive, aggressive, unpredictable, charming, emotional, courageous and capable of great love.

Year of the Rabbit - 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are articulate, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit people seldom lose their temper. Those born under this sign are affectionate, talented, obliging, always pleasant, valuing security and tranquility. They have a tendency to get too sentimental and superficial and to avoid conflict and emotional involvement

Year of the Dragon - 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000

People born in the Year of the Dragon are healthy, energetic, excitable, short-tempered, and stubborn. They are also honest, sensitive, brave, and they inspire confidence and trust. Dragon people are the most eccentric of any in the eastern zodiac. Those born under the sign are considered intelligent, gifted, bossy, loud, garish, and unfaithful, but also popular and successful, full of vitality and enthusiasm. They usually look stubborn on outside, softhearted inside though.

Year of the Snake - 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001

People born in the Year of the Snake are deep. Snake people are often quite vain, selfish, and a bit stingy. Yet they have tremendous sympathy for others and try to help those less fortunate. Snake people tend to overdo, since they have doubts about other people's judgment and prefer to rely on themselves. They are determined in whatever they do and hate to fail. Although calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate.

Year of the Horse - 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002

People born in the Year of the Horse are popular. They are cheerful, skillful with money, and perceptive, although they sometimes talk too much. The are wise, talented, good with their hands, and sometimes have a weakness for members of the opposite sex. They are impatient and hot-blooded about everything except their daily work. They like entertainment and large crowds. They are very independent and rarely listen to advice

Year of the Ram - 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003

People born in the Year of Ram seem to be, at first glance, better off than those born in the zodiac's other years. But ram year people are often shy, pessimistic, and puzzled about life. Sometimes clumsy in speech, they are always passionate about what they do and what they believe in. The sign suggests creative, artistic, passionate, elegant, warmhearted, honest, charming but pessimistic, timid, disorganized and vulnerable. Too much dependent on material comforts, they are quick to complain and do not respond well to pressure, but will find their own natural solution to a problem when given space.

Year of the Monkey - 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004

People born in the Year of the Monkey are the erratic geniuses of the cycle. Clever, skillful, and flexible, they are remarkably inventive and original and can solve the most difficult problems with ease. There are few fields in which Monkey people wouldn't be successful but they have a disconcerting habit of being too agreeable. They want to do things now, and if they cannot get started immediately, they become discouraged and sometimes leave their projects. Although good at making decisions, they tend to look down on others. Having common sense, Monkey people have a deep desire for knowledge and have excellent memories.

Year of the Rooster - 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005

People born in the Year of the Rooster are deep thinkers, capable, and talented. They like to be busy and are devoted beyond their capabilities and are deeply disappointed if they fail. Roosters are often a bit eccentric, and often have rather difficult relationship with others. They always think they are right and usually are! They frequently are loners and though they give the outward impression of being adventurous, they are timid. Rooster people's emotions like their fortunes, swing very high to very low. They can be selfish and too outspoken, but are always interesting and can be extremely brave.

Year of the Dog - 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006

People born in the Year of the Dog possess the best traits of human nature. They have a deep sense of loyalty, and inspire other people's confidence because they know how to keep secrets. Those born under this sign are honest, quiet, intelligent, generous, stubborn, loyal and faithful to those they love. But Dog People are somewhat selfish, terribly stubborn, and eccentric. They care little for wealth, yet somehow always seem to have money. They can be cold emotionally and sometimes distant at parties. They can find fault with many things and are noted for their sharp tongues.

Year of the Boar (Pig) - 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007

Pigs are honest, reliable, sincere, tolerant, shy, affectionate, kind, impulsive and short tempered. They are splendid companions, intellectuals with a very strong need to set difficult goals and carry them out. In addition they are extraordinarily naive. Their unquenchable thirst for knowledge will facilitate their success whereas their quest for material comfort will frustrate it. Pigs also wiil sacrifice their lives for good causes.
