"Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" is a popular movie that was made in 1971, directed by Mel Stuart. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a re-make of Willy Wonka, made in 2005 and directed by Tim Burton. The titles of the 2 movies really should be switched. In Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory it's all about Charlie and his hard time trying to find the golden ticket. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory it's more about Willy Wonka and his no longer existent relationship with his father due to the fact that his dad was a dentist and Willy left home to open his own candy factory. The two movies are similar because they have Willy Wonka, the factory, and the 5 kids getting golden tickets, but really they are entirely different.

Oh, maybe I should've watched the new one.
random on November 22, 2012:
Can't I love both?
The original is like childhood, I can't hate it. The only issue I have is the tone does not suit Roald Dahl at all. (Plus they got the Oompa Loompas wrong, but I still like them.)
But it does well to make it it's own entity, while still sort of being true to the source material.
The new one has the right Roald Dahl tone (even if it wasn't evident in this particular book.) And I quite liked the Grampa Joe backstory. Naww.
To those complaining that the new was too dark or creepy or whatever, kindly read up on Roald Dahl.
His books were freaking written like that and any adaption to screen (to me at least) has to be dark in order to do him justice. /rant
The casts I like about the same with a few exceptions.
In the new I prefer Augustus Gloop because his gluttony showed more and Violet because she was less likable than her original counterpart.
In the old I preferred Veruka Salt because she was such a little B, but the new one really had the annoying snooty whiny voice down pat.
I prefer old Mike Teevee, he was a riot, the new one was modernized very well, though.
I also prefer old Willy Wonka. The new, while kind of fascinating to watch in a strange way, wasn't the genius of the old.
I like the old Charlie just marginally better. He was more relatable and they gave him a bit of character development. The new one I found a bit annoying, but he was kind of cute. Nawww. Plus, I acknowledge that he's supposed to be a role model, hence his Jesus impersonation in the book. But I think the change in the old movie worked out well.
So having read the book, I choose both!

""Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a re-make of Willy Wonka"
No it's not. It is an adaptation of a book by Roald Dahl, as was the 1971 film. The 2005 version is much more faithful to the book as well.
I find it odd when people say they find Depp's portrayal of Wonka as "creepy" in comparison to Gene Wilder's, after all it is the latter who goes though the film shouting, mumbling incoherent songs and freaking out to a backdrop of images such as a chicken being decapitated while on the boat.
There are things I like about both versions - Roy Kinnear's portrayal of Mr Salt for example in the earlier film, but I think the 2005 film is far superior.

Thanks for the advice. I will be sure to add some more info. But it does say in the title Willy Wonka Vs. Charlie : The Characters. That's what I was making this about, the differences between the characters, instead of just another movie comparison.

The original Willy Wonka is without a doubt the superior movie. However, it doesn't seem like there is really much of a comparison here. Just cast lists. It might be a good idea to add some more content about the actual movies.

I definitely agree with ALL of this! The original is so much better, and the characters are better in the first one. And yes, the newer version is pretty creepy. Ha-ha. Also, August Rush is amazing. I love that movie. :)

I prefer Wonka, Violet, Veruca and Mike much better in the original. I like both movies, but Johnny Depp makes the newer one a little creepy to me. I love Freddy Highmore, though. Especially in August Rush :]
