Everyone can admit that Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle wear some very fashionable, elegant and very expensive outfits. Many people are uninformed and believe British taxpayers foot the bill for their clothes. Even some people who live in Britain think so, but that is far from the truth.
The royal wives make hundreds of appearances where they are watched very closely. Their outfits cost thousands of dollars which is much more than some people's monthly mortgage payments. Even so, the outfits or replicas are usually sold out as soon as the public sees the women wearing them.
Since taxpayers don't pay for all those gorgeous clothes that the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex wear, who pays for them?
Before the women got married, they paid for their own clothes even though they carried out official duties while they were engaged. Both of them could afford to do so.
Prince William and Prince Harry might have helped their fiancées pay for their clothes with their own personal money. No funds came from the royal purse or from taxpayers.
Kate Middleton's Wealth Before and After Marriage
Kate Middleton's family paid for her custom Sarah Burton Alexander McQueen wedding gown. It cost about $200,000 when the family originally purchased it. Now, it is reportedly worth over $400,000.
Kate herself is worth around $10 million, and the company her family owns is reportedly worth $50 million. Prince William's net worth is estimated to be about $40 million. Now that William and Kate are married, Kate doesn't have to spend any of her money. In fact, William doesn't have to spend money on Kate's wardrobe either.
The Duke and Duchess do not have to spend their personal money because they get an allowance from Prince Charles.
Meghan Markle's Wealth Before and After Marriage
Meghan’s outfits are very expensive. Before she was married to Prince Harry, she paid for her own clothes even when she was on official duty. She could afford to do so because her net worth was estimated to be $7 million before the wedding.
She paid for the $78,000 Ralph and Russo gown she wore for her engagement pictures last December. It was also reported that she paid as much as $265,000 for her custom Givenchy wedding gown.
Meghan became eligible for an allowance after she married Prince Harry on May 19. Therefore, she no longer has to pay for her own clothes.
Harry’s net worth is estimated to be between $25-$40 million, according to Money. After Princess Diana’s death in1997, Harry and William shared $20 million from their mother’s will.
Harry also received more than William from their great-grandmother the Queen Mother, who died in 2002. That's because Prince William is next in line to inherit the Duchy of Cornwall when Prince Charles becomes king.
Prince Charles is in charge of the money that comes in from the Duchy of Cornwall which is a private estate that was established in 1337 by Edward III. Funds come in from the rental of the property. He uses the money for his and his children salaries, clothing, office expenses, public appearances, charitable and private activities.
Last year, Prince Charles gave an allowance of $4.8 million to Prince William, Kate, and Prince Harry. It is estimated that the number will go up to $6.5 million this year because Meghan is included. Also, Queen Elizabeth has given her grandchildren and their wives more of her duties that she has stepped away from. Therefore, they will a need for a bigger allowance.
No Free Clothes
Every designer would love to give the royals free clothes to wear, but the royals are not allowed to accept freebies. The royal family can request a selection of clothes to choose from. They pay for the ones they want to pay and send back the ones they do not select.
What Happens to Clothes After Duchesses Wear Them?
Have you ever wondered what happens to all those clothes after the royal women wear them? On rare occasions, Kate has been seen wearing an outfit more than once.
Kate and Meghan will probably do the same thing with their clothes that Princess Diana did with hers. She allowed them to be auctioned off for charity. Just two months before her death in 1997, $3.25 million was raised after she donated 79 of her dresses to benefit cancer and AIDS causes.

I think Duchess Meghan & Kate should get a discount on the price for the outfits they wear when on Official Duties since their outfits sell out extremely fast! Sometimes Prince Charles complains that Duchess Meghan's outfits are too expensive!! If, the Duchesses auctioned some outfits for Charity can the money go to their own charities!! If not, some rules need to be changed because it's so unfair!! FOREVER LOVE & PEACE TO THE WORLD!!!

These women do an amazing job for the Royal family and should have an allowance out of the privy purse .

Ellison and Tim, I am glad you enjoyed my article about who pays for the Duchesses' wardrobes.
Some people think taxpayers foot the bill for their expensive outfits. It is interesting that they get an allowance for their clothes and other things.

These two women have class and style with their wardrobes and I enjoy reading about them. It's nice to know Prince Charles looks after his family members with allowances which helps them perform royal duties and stay fashionable.
Great information and wonderful article.

This is interesting, I always noticed the stunning outfits, but never considered who would pay for them. That's nice that sometimes their clothes are auctioned for charity, seems like a better idea then just sitting in the closet!
