What matters most in the world of entertainment is the impact it brings to the audience, and the power it holds to spread that impact.
Did you know that BTS was initially meant to be a hip hop group, instead of an idol group? If you didn’t, well now you know. BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean, and Bulletproof Boy Scouts in English, began its band formation when HYBE’s (originally known as Big Hit Entertainment) former CEO Bang Si-hyuk met RM and was impressed by his rapping. RM inspired him to form a hip hop group. However, he realized that the contemporary youth needs someone to lean on, so BTS debuted as an idol group instead.
In this article, I’d like to talk about the things that made me love the first three members of BTS: Kim Namjoon aka RM, Min Yoongi aka Suga/Agust D, and Jung Hoseok aka J-Hope. They are the BTS rap line. Their rap skills produce high quality content, flow, and delivery in their music, but each member truly excels in a particular rap component. RM is known for his mind-blowing lyrics, Suga is known for his exceptional speed, or what we ARMYs would love to refer to as ‘tongue technology,’ and J-Hope is known for his incredible rhythm/flow.
Here are some of the things I love about the BTS Rap Line:
Famously known as the “God of Destruction” for accidentally breaking things, I’d say that his rapping ability can also break haters with just one deadly line. On the more positive side, his genius wordplay creates a very enlightening perspective in life. I love his depth in being a lyricist. Whether his message is for the haters, for ARMYs, or for the entire world, he never fails to blow my mind with the deep essence of his words.
Whenever I’m in need of a chockfull dose of determination, I listen to RM because his vocal quality is very strong, and his messages cut through the heart. Though I love all his songs, my ultimate favorite RM solo tracks are: (1) What Am I to You, the intro to their Dark & Wild album which was released on August 2014, (2) Persona, the intro to their Map of the Soul: Persona album which was released on April 2019, as well as Map of the Soul: 7 which was released on February 2020, (3) Do You from his debut mixtape entitled RM, and (4) Joke, which is also from the album, RM, which was released on March 2015. He also has a second mixtape entitled Mono, which was released on October 2018.

Suga aka Agust D
Suga aka Agust D is my ultimate bias from the rap line because I can relate with him the most. He’s savage, not very fond of people, talks without filter, and always makes ARMYs go crazy with his tongue technology. His savage lyrics and rapping speed are what I anticipate the most when I listen to his music. And when I’m in the mood to learn good life lessons, or just feeling rebellious over something, I listen to him.
Though each member of the rap line writes from experience, Suga seems to have had the most difficult life amongst the three. I’m not going to share them here because I always tear up whenever I think about his humble beginnings, as well as the fact that his parents were against his music back in the day, but I am going to share my ultimate favorite Suga and Agust D songs: (1) Trivia: Seesaw is my uplifting anthem because the lively beat makes me want to dance and just chill, despite the heavy message it delivers about ending a relationship. This song also made me realize how much I love his singing voice. He rarely sings, but I am telling you, he has an alluring voice that makes me die every time and get resurrected. Seesaw is from BTS’ Love Yourself: Answer album which was released on August 2018, (2) First Love is the first Suga solo song that made me cry! This song is so emotional because he refers to his piano as his first love and tells the story about how he abandoned it and found his way back to it again. This song is from the BTS’ Wings album that was released on October 2016, (3) Agust D is my favorite diss track. It’s from his debut mixtape of the same name, which was released on August 2016, (4) Daechwita is the lead single from his second mixtape album entitled D-2 which was released on May 2020. I will never get sick and tired of listening and watching the music video to this song because it was one of my ultimate favorite MVs, (5) Moonlight is such a chill song that also showcases Agust D’s singing voice. The meaning is serious and heavy, but the rhythm gives a smooth vibe where you can just sing along and dance a little.

Did you know that J-Hope originally auditioned as a vocalist, but ended up as a rapper and main dancer? Well, now you know. Amongst the three members, J-Hope is the most that lights me up; he is my sunshine, or I guess he is everyone’s sunshine. He has the most consistent smiley face, but when he’s up onstage rapping, singing, and dancing, he’s got the most swag. His voice tone, timbre, and texture make me melt every single time because of his unique voice quality.
His music style just makes me want to dance and be happy all the time, so when I’m in a lively mood, J-Hope’s music is my best pick. Though I love all his songs so dearly, my ultimate favorites are: (1) Daydream from his mixtape album entitled Hope World which was released on March 2018, (2) Just Dance from the Love Yourself: Answer BTS album that was released on August 2018, (3) Outro: Ego from the Map of the Soul: 7 BTS album which was released on February 2020, and (4) Blue Side extended version which was released on BANGTANTV YouTube channel and SoundCloud during the third-year anniversary of his album, Hope World.

As for my ultimate favorite rap unit songs, it would have to be all the Cyphers. I just love how they slapped their haters through all the four Cypher tracks. They are my ultimate rap line diss tracks. However, if I have to choose just one ultimate favorite Cypher track, then that would be Cypher pt. 2.
If you want a complete list of their solo and unit songs on Spotify, you can check them out through my playlist: BTS RAP LINE.
