What is “HiDive.com”?
HiDive.com is an entertainment provider, they specialize in streaming, dubbing and subbing Japanese anime they license. They have a wide variety of anime for all ages and demographics. They simulcast anime in Japanese with English subtitles and if the anime is popular enough, they will release an English dub simultaneously.
They also have an online store where you can buy physical copies of the anime they license without having to use another online store. They also periodically put their anime on sale so you can get a great deal on a physical copy of the anime they have on their site.
The Site Works Great!
HiDive’s site works great, I don’t have a lot of problems playing episodes on my PC. I can easily change language and subtitles in the audio settings for anime that have both English and Japanese audio and subtitle options for the anime I watch.
You can also change the color of the subtitles so that’s a nice option between white and yellow.
The Audio and Subtitle Options Are Nice!
HiDive does a great job with both audio and subtitle options. They have each language that is available under the settings option on the video player, and you can choose your language preference and if you want captions for your video.
It’s all easy to set and you can also choose in your settings whether you prefer the original Japanese language with English subtitles, or English dubbing as your first choice when you start watching an episode on HiDive.
The Sales Discounts Are Amazing, but Shipping Is Expensive
Sentai Filmworks will have sales on their website, and the discounts are very steep if you are able to visit the site while there’s a sale going on. However, the amount to spend to get free shipping is over $75.00 and that’s a lot of money, but if you just buy a few items you pay $7.00 for shipping, so while they have amazing sales, it can add up paying for shipping.
The Subtitles Are Higher on the App Than I Would Like
I’ve noticed when I play anime on the app in Japanese with English subtitles the subtitles are higher on the screen. Although I understand this is so that if you want to rewind or fast forward to a section of the episode, the subtitles won’t be covered by the player, it’s still jarring and looks weird when I stare at my iPhone.
I wish the subtitles were a little lower but it’s still okay, it just takes some getting used to.
The App Doesn’t Have Their Entire Catalog
I recently discovered since I started using the app that you can’t watch all the anime in Sentai Filmworks’ catalog, some of the movie licenses like Grave of the Fireflies are not available for streaming.
The app still gives you access to most of the entries in Sentai Filmworks’ catalog, but it’s weird that they don’t give you access to every anime on their website.
I wish that they didn’t limit which anime are available on the app but there’s nothing I can do about it.
Their Website Is Better Than Funimation, but They Still Need a Lot of Improvement
HiDive’s website and video player function very well and I don’t have problems playing videos, unlike Funimation where the website just refused to play videos.
HiDive will play videos and it won’t get stuck trying to buffer the video. I have had videos get stuck if they are paused for a long period of time, but most of the time the video will play without any issues.
If HiDive wants to compete with other streaming services, they will need to improve the video player and make it easier to use and more responsive on mobile devices.
|What Works:||What Doesn't Work:|
Great site layout
The shipping is expensive
The video player works
The app is slow and unresponsive
The sales are great!
Not all their anime is on the app
My Rating: B-
HiDive.com is a good streaming site with a large catalog of great anime that you’ll enjoy watching. The site is easy to use and the player works very well. The HiDive app lacks quick response when you scroll through episodes and feels very clunky. If the app were improved, I would give them a better grade but the app is what holds the rating back because it’s so slow.
However, HiDive has great sales which s excellent for anime blu-ray collection and they have nice collector’s editions from what I can tell, but at full price it can be expensive and the cost to get to free shipping being over $75.00 is a lot, but if you buy a bunch of anime during a big sale you could get a lot for your money for that price.
I highly recommend HiDive, despite the problems with the app, I still like the service and I still use it, since it’s only $4.99 a month to pay for access to most of the Sentai Filmworks catalog.
It’s worth my money for me to watch anime on the site and I’ll be reviewing more anime that is streaming on HiDive and since I have a subscription there I’ll be reviewing some of their exclusives (I’m not touching Redo of a Healer) so be on the lookout for those anime reviews.
HiDive is also the cheapest anime streaming service at $4.99 a month with Crunchyroll at $9.99, Hulu is $11.99 Amazon Prime is $14.99 a month and Netflix is $19.99 a month.
HiDive may not be the best anime streaming site, but they have a large catalog both subbed and dubbed and they’re always getting more anime. They also have some great exclusives like Legend of the Galactic Heroes and. Lupin the 3rd Part 6.
The website and the app could use improvements to be more user friendly and I wish the app wasn’t so clunky. I also wish that they would put all the anime they have on the mobile app.
However, I do feel it is worth your time if you want an anime streaming service that doesn’t cost you a lot of money. It’s a great way to see new anime and some interesting exclusives they have on their site. They also pride themselves on uncut, uncensored anime so if that is something you want then you will get it there.
While Funimation did have uncensored home video versions on their site, their migration to Crunchyroll has fans worried that Crunchyroll will just use the broadcast versions of anime on their website and never use the home video version for streaming.
I do enjoy using HiDive, I have been using it more since there are exclusives I want to watch on the site right now. I do think things on their site could improve, but so far, they are much better than Funimation Entertainment, but if they improve their app, they would have more happy subscribers.
