"Walled In" Movie Review: Joseph Malestrazza Architect

"Walled In" On Amazon

4 1/2 Stars

I really enjoyed this one!

Mischa Barton is the star of the film as she plays Sam Walczak , a building demolition specialist. Sam is called to survey a building which, come to find out, has a horrible past. When she arrives at the property, she is greeted by the caretaker (Deborah Kara Unger ) and her son, Jimmy (Cameron Bright ). Although the building is set to be demolished, there remains a few tenants.

Sam studies the blueprints and realizes that they don't match the interior construction. There are thick walls and passageways that are not included on the blueprints. To top it off, Jimmy begins to enlighten Sam with the grim history of the place; there were 16 bodies buried inside the walls, one of those being Jimmy's father. The murderer was never caught.

The architect that built the property, Joseph Malestrazza, was an eccentric genius. The building's design was created using similar ideas from the ancient pyramids. The building is indestructible and like the ancient pyramids, has a tomb in the center.

Jimmy is a quite strange, perhaps because he has no interaction with the outside world, he lost his father, and his mother is also a bit weird. Jimmy becomes obsessed with Sam, like a teen age crush. Strange things begin to happen and Sam is at a loss in regard to the building's true design. After going through several secret passages, Jimmy ends up imprisoning Sam in the bowels of the building.

The movie plays out and Sam realizes that she is held prisoner along with the architect, Malestrazza. He has been kept there for many years. The end of the movie is that Jimmy turns out to be really psycho, his mom is too, and Sam's company (owned by her father) finally comes to see what's going on since he hadn't heard from her for a while.

Sam gets saved, but not until after Jimmy jumps int the pit, killing himself. Prior to that, Malestrazza forces Sam to kill him and he is buried in the hole-with no surprise-in concrete. I think that's pretty much what made the building similar to an ancient pyramid, with the tomb in the middle.
