Whatever Happened To.......sinbad

Sinbad

Sinbad

Have you ever wondered

Have you ever wondered whatever happened to some of your favorite or not so favorite entertainers, or maybe the famous, or infamous people that were formerly in the limelight but, are not anymore. Well so do I, so I'll attempt to find out and I'll bring back what I find and share with Hubpages.

My first attempt is Sinbad, the comedian. Sinbad just happened to be one of the funniest comedians of modern times. Of course it's my opinion, but just take a look at the video, and see if you don't concur. Think about it, he did it all without a single expletive, (obscene word), or racy innuendo. As a matter of fact Sinbad is commonly known as the clean comedian, and that is my kind of comedian, ergo Sinbad is my kind of comedian.

Sinbad facts

Sinbad, born David Adkins to a Baptist minister, Donald Adkins and his wife Martha. He has five siblings, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. The 6'5 comedian attended the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, USA, between the years of 1974 and 1978 where he lettered two seasons for the basketball team.

He married Meredith Fuller in 1985, the marriage ended in divorce in 1992. The union produced two children. Sinbad served in the US Air Force as a boom operator aboard the KC-135 Stratotanker, circa 1981.

Sinbad got his start as a comedian, as a finalist on Star Search, a predecessor to American Idol. Star Search hosted by Ed McMahon, aired between 1983 and 1995. Some notables that appeared on Star Search, as contestants, are, Drew Carey, (The Price is Right), Britney Spears, Rosie O'Donnell, Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morisette, Dennis Miller, and more. I digress. Anyway Sinbad won his round as a stand-up comedian against comedian Dennis Miller, and lasted seven rounds.

Sinbad went on to appear on television and in the movies, host and emcee serveral award and variety shows. Some Sinbad movies are, "Houseguest," where he appeared with the late Phil Hartman, (funny, funny), also, "First Kid." Sinbad has been largely out of the limelight for sometime now. Prompting rumors of his death. Even Wikipedia got in on the rumor.

What is Sinbad doing now

After a career high in the '90's, Sinbad took a lower profile. However, he has been busy touring comedy clubs and lending his voice to various projects. He said in an interview, that he is putting some new TV shows and movies together. His 23 year old daughter is a singer and has an album coming out, and she also acts. His son is a recording engineer and filmmaker, and Sinbad says he is aiding them to, as he puts it, "take it to the next level and showing them how to own their own product."

On Sept. 9, 2009 Sinbad ended his almost 15 year hiatus from doing comedy taping, to tape a special for Comedy Central, which will air early 2010. Comedy Central names Sinbad as one of it's top 100 stand-up comedians of all times.

So that's what Sinbad has been doing and is doing now. Let's be on the look-out for his future ventures. I personally can't wait to see what he does next.

Update

As of March, 2010 Sinbad will be on the new Celebrity Apprentice with Donald Trump, on the NBC Network, USA. I anxiously await the show. I will continue to make updates to the hub. Update to the update. Sinbad now has a reality show on one of the cable stations. I guess I should have found that out before I did the update.

Thanks Deb, I want to see him live some day.

debW07 on September 05, 2014:

I absolutely love Sinbad. I saw him in person last year and laughed the entire evening. I want to see him come back to the big screen and in more television specials.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on April 29, 2011:

I saw it too tamlynken, and Sinbad is really on all the time, I don't know how he does it. Most comedians are not funny to me anymore, I guess I'm too old to appreciate their kind of humor, but Sinbad still makes me laugh. Thank you very much for stopping, please come back.

tamlynken from Georgia on April 29, 2011:

I recently saw his new reality show. I really enjoyed it. He is back with his wife-he too lost his home and moved back in with the ex-wife and the two grown kids are back in the house too. I can't remember what station but it is very interesting to see how people live and what they go through.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on April 21, 2011:

Tabitha, Burr, I do hope Sinbad is reading this hub, to feel the love from all of his fans.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on February 07, 2011:

Yes sliprock, I am enjoying the show also, and it appears that it's only on for the month of February. I wish it would stay on for good.

sliprock on February 07, 2011:

You're right he did remarry his first wife. Oh and by the way he is going to be on a special on BET in February, 2011. I agree, we need GOOD CLEAN FUNNY HUMOR.

Dee on January 22, 2011:

I think that Sinbad remarried his first wife...I think that is great if so. It was good seeing him on Celebrity Apptentice and his comedy special but we want more. What else does he have coming up. Movie? Tour? WE WANT SINBAD WE WANT SINBAD. GOOD CLEAN FUNNY HUMOR

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on January 14, 2011:

Oh, do I ever agree he is, in my humble opinion, a genius in the comedy department. Thank you Dmw03 for weighing in on this article.

Dmw03 on January 14, 2011:

I think he is a genius. I think it was Bill Cosby that pointed out that it takes a high level of intelligence to be so entertaining yet free of filth, He being another great comedic mind. I would watch Sinbad anytime, anywhere. Great family entertainment.

We love you Sinbad

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on August 30, 2010:

Pamela Lipscomb from Charlotte, North Carolina on February 26, 2010:

fastfreta, thanks for the walk down memory lane. I remember watching Sunbad doing his thing on tv. You are right, his act was family oriented; no profanity. Its great that he's coming back. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Great job!

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on November 06, 2009:

I agree create a page, with you about missing him, however I hope that is all in the past, seeing that he is working on doing some new things in the future. Thanks for stopping, see you soon.

Fastfreta I can see that again we have the same taste, but this time it is about a comedian we both like. I saw Sinbad on television's 'Praise the Lord', the Trinity Broadcasting Network program. He was actually commenting on the very same thing, his reasons for leaving the limelight for a while. The last time I saw him before that was on the 'It's A Different World' Cosby Series. We really do miss him.

Congratulations on another hub well written and very informative.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on November 06, 2009:

Thanks Lady_E, I wasn't sure how popular he was away from the US, I see he is probably world renown. As I stated he is well worth watching. Thanks for commenting.

Elena from London, UK on November 06, 2009:

I recognise his face but haven't seen him on TV for a while either. It's nice to read more facts about him though. Thanks. Also, for a while now (honestly) I've been wondering where Angela Bassett is. Haven't seen her in a film for a very long time.

Thanks for updating us on what Sinbad has in the Pipeline.

Regards, E.

So right Rebecca, I think when you fly below the radar, you have less chance of the public getting tired of you. Thanks for stopping. Please stop over again.

Thanks Veronica, I so agree about the whole family thing. I never was ashamed to listen to him with my family. We need more of his type. Thanks for stopping and commenting. Please come again soon.

Veronica Allen from Georgia on November 06, 2009:

This was such a great idea fastfreta. I wondered what happened to Sinbad as well. He was one of those few comedians that you could listen to with your whole family, and who kept you in stitches even without all the vulgar language. Thanks for updating us. This was a fun read.

Rebecca E. from Canada on November 06, 2009:

cool to know that some people know when to stay out of teh limelight, but stay with their roots.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on November 06, 2009:

Okay Bk, Mom Mabley, what do you know about her, I now have an idea how old you are, LOL, I wish I'd seen the special.

Thanks habee, that's the reason I decided to look him up, because I had not seen him lately.

Thanks Bail Up, I agree, so clean and seemingly a gentleman.

Thanks shyonegb, I too often wondered what became of him.

Thanks Hello, hello, for the compliment.

Thank you all for stopping and for your comments, as usual please come again soon.

BkCreative from Brooklyn, New York City on November 06, 2009:

Sinbad is so funny. I picked up a library video with an old stand up routine - funnee stuff!

Your hub is chock full of sooo much good information. My earliest desire was to do stand up comedy when I became an old lady (I still have some time) because I adored Moms Mabley.

Well, speaking of Sinbad, he was on PBS the other night - hosting the Mark Twain tribute to Bill Cosby. Lots of good humor.

We need more humor!

Thanks fastfreta!

Holle Abee from Georgia on November 06, 2009:
