Vampire Diaries' Original Finale Ending Explained And Who Changed It

In The Vampire Diaries' finale Elena and Damon live happily ever after -- but that was not the original ending the show creators had in mind.

The Planned vs The Finale

In the finale of Vampire Diaries both Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert lived a long and happy life together -- but that's not what the show creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec had in mind and changed the ending after Nina Dobrev decided to leave the show. The Vampire Diaries spawned over eight seasons and featured two spin-offs, The Originals and The Legacies. Each season centers around new threats threatening to disrupt peaceful life at Mystic Falls and the supernatural and human residents alike. But the main success point of the show's rapid fan following was obviously the love triangle between Elena and the vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore. Even after so many years, the "Stelena" fans still want to see Elena with Damon.

The Legacies and Spin-Offs

Dobrev announced on Instagram

In the pilot episode of Vampire Diaries both Stephen and Elena meet and it's love at first sight, but it's not as happy as it sounds as their love faces endless obstacles including Elena's growing attraction towards the elder Salvatore. And, in the season 4 finale Elena finally declared her love for Damon breaking Stefan's heart. Just a month before the finale of season 6, Dobrev posted on her Instagram account she would leave the show after completing the sixth season. Dobrev said she always wanted Elena's story to be a six-season adventure, and during those six years she got to ride a lifetime memorable journey. The show creatively showed Elena's absence by showing her in a mystical state of coma. But, Dobrev returned for the finale season and repriced her roles of both Elena and Katherine Pierce (Dobrev plats all the five Petrova doppelgangers) with Stefan injecting his brother with the cure and sacrificed himself saving Mystic Falls and everyone he loved giving Damon mortality and Elena.

During an interview with EW Plec told how she and Williamson had decided on ending the series in season 2 with Damon and Elena sacrificing themselves for Elena and residing on the other side and watching Elena live a happy mortal life probably with her childhood sweetheart Matt Donovan. Plec had hoped they could reignite the love triangle between Elena-Damon-Stefan and figure out a way to end the bitter-sweet friendship between Stefan and Elena and involve into something more than just friends. Plec also told how she felt Dobrev's exit kind of sealed Damon and Elena's romantic contract. It certainly would be hard to imagine how they clung on to Elena -- who happens to have adamant feelings about people sacrificing themselves for her and losing her greatest loves in her life without any severe audience back-lashing.

Vampire Diaries Celebrate Season 8

Season 7 of Vampire Diaries focused mainly on Damon proving to be a good friend and loyal brother in Elena's absence. Season 8 saw both brothers facing repercussions from their violent pasts and introduction of Cade, aka "the Devil." The season also saw themes of redemption, forgiveness, and retribution as the finale seasons driving force. Though it looked like during the two seasons Nina Dobrev took leave, the series had strayed away from its root plot with Stefan and Caroline Forbes falling in love, but their romance did not have the passion and angst that Stefan showed for Elena. Maybe if Elena had not departed from the series, the much-loved Caroline-Klaus Mikaelson pair might have gotten more traction despite their spin-off in New Orleans.

Paul Wesley (Stefan) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon)

No doubt Stefan's death devastated most of the fans, but it's his sacrifice that brought the Salvatore brothers story the much-needed rest. After all it was Stefan who made Damon a vampire and effectively turned him into a monster due to which throughout the Vampire Diaries seasons he tried mending their broken relationship, and tried to get Damon to forgive, and give him back whatever belonged to him. In the end, both the Salvatore brothers became heroes saving the ones they loved. Instead of living on the Other Side as ghosts according to the original end planned by Plec and Williamson, Stefan found the peace he longed for and Damon lives thanks to the Easter Eggs of the Legacies'.
