Where is Tyler Childers From?
Tyler Childers was born June 21, 1991 and raised in Louisa, Kentucky, a small community located near the state's border. Where Kentucky land turns into the Big Sandy River and washes up on the banks of West Virginia.
Tyler started to appear on Youtube in 2009, which is about the same time that made the move from Louisa to Lexington, KY. Lexington is undoubtedly where his music career began to take shape.
I don't know why,
but every time I cross that river -
Lord, there's something tears me up,
and make me wild"
— Tyler Childers
From an early age, Childers was influenced by his dad's music choices. He grew up listening to artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR (Creedenece Clearwater Revival). His parents took him to attend a lot of concerts and show when he was young. This struck a love of music in Tyler and he began collecting vinyl records sometime in high school.
Childers was raised in a Southern Baptist Church. He has stated in previous interviews that his favorite part of the service was singing from the old Hymn books.
Tyler's grandfather has also heavily influenced his love for music, especially bluegrass. Childers states in an interview with the blueskitchen that his grandfather bought him [Childers] his first guitar when he was five years old, It wasn't until age 13 that Tyler began to take lessons and learn to play himself.
Most importantly, Tyler had an early love of writing and reading. He reveals that he began to write stories at a young age. So whenever he picked up the guitar, songwriting just seemed to come naturally to him.
Tyler is a songwriter and has been performing and recording his music since sometime around 2005, and it was obvious to see that he is a natural at it. Many of his songs capture a story with a the sound of a Country Bluegrass Classic. Childers says he writes for himself first, and so he isn't sure how to categorize his music into a specific genre.
He released his first album, Bottles and Bibles, in 2011. It features some of his most popular songs, including Hard Times and Good Thing Windin Down.
His album, Purgatory, was released in 2017. However somewhere between that time he produced several other popular hits on kind of a series of demos that he recorded while trying to perfect his album.
In 2020, his album Country Squire was finally complete and it is still making it's mark on his fans and his career.
Does Sturgill Simpson produce Tyler Childers' music?
Many articles credit Sturgill Simpson for discovering Tyler Childers. While it is true that Sturgill Simpson largely helped produce and distribute Tyler's second album "Purgatory", Childers has since kick started his own label known as Hickman Holller Records.
Simpson and Childers have a friendship that has benefited them both within their music careers, but I think it is self to say that Tyler Childers is a self made artist with his own distinguished sound. With a little help from RCA, Hickman Holler Records produced Childers' latest album, "County Squire" and so far it has been a major success.
Tyler Childers Live
I am proud to say that i've been lucky enough to see Tyler Childers twice. It's safe to say that each time I was equally impressed. He sounds just the same live, maybe even better.
The first event I attended headlined Tyler Childers at The Louisville Palace in Louisville, KY on New Years Eve 2019. It was a great show with some very lively open acts including The Blackfoot Gypsies.
The second even that I attended was one of Marty Stewarts annual Late Night Jams at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville also in 2019. The line up included Dierks Bentley, Old Crow Medicine Show, Steve Miller, and more! In my opinion, the crowd roared louder when they announced Tyler Childers than when they announced any other artists. It was amazing to see how many people had been just as in awe by his music as I had been.
Below is a personal photo that I took at The Louisville Palace on December 31, 2018.
Is Tyler Childers Married?
Tyler Childers is married to fellow artists, Senora May. They have been collaborating on music together and she is featured in Childers song, Jersey Giant. I think it's safe to say that he draws a lot of inspiration from his "lady of the estill springs".
