PanamaTrickster Reviews: Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

See movie reviews (with no spoilers) of the latest films from PanamaTrickster, an aspiring movie critic.

This film knows exactly what you want as a fan of the first film, and delivers exactly what you've been craving without overdoing it. It remembers its roots well, and pays an incredible amount of respect to it.

While Tom Cruise deserves all the praise for his perfect reentry into his role as the deservingly arrogant Maverick, Miles Teller was an absolutely phenomenal choice as a descendent of Goose from the first film, and I cannot believe the performance could have been more believable from any other actor.

The filming techniques Joseph Kosinski used in Top Gun Maverick were reminiscent of the first film's techniques, while incorporating its own without feeling like it was intruding on the original style of Tony Scott. The lighting felt almost as gorgeous as a Michael Bay film, showing their true colors mainly when scenes were filmed at dusk.

The score was perfectly incorporated into the film, and every scene where it was present felt full of nostalgia and love for its predecessor. Hans Zimmer is credited for the score, and proves to once again capture the tone of his task perfectly.

All in all, if you are a fan of the first film, you will absolutely have a blast with this one, and you would be hard pressed to find a whole lot, if anything at all wrong with this sequel. It is exactly what a sequel should be: An original idea, with respect to its predecessor, a poetic parallel and an expansion on the existing universe.
