Devin loves movies and loves critically looking at them. He hopes to give people the same appreciation for film that he has.
Superhero movies have really been around for a while. The first real blockbuster coming from Superman in the 70's which we all know is a really great movie and very important to superhero movies in general. Since then we have seen many more superhero movies, some comic book based, and some not. These movies have certainly evolved, but some would argue those older films developed stories better than now. It is hard to say, but I will attempt at coming up with my top 5 superhero movies of all time.
5. Justice League: The Snyder Cut
This movie shows what can happen when you let a fan create a superhero story. Zach Snyder creates one of the most compelling and engaging story and after 4 hours leaves you with wanting more. Every character is done so well unlike the Justice League that we got in theaters. This film takes its time drawing us in to each individual all the while having a sense of urgency due to an imminent danger.
It can be hard taking time to introduce several new characters, but this film does it so well. Granted, they had 4 hours to do that, but they made the most of their time and did it with excellence. The action sequences were great as well as the acting. There are obviously a lot of big name actors and they all brought it with this film. This is a totally different movie from the one we originally got. Even Steppenwolf's motivations in this film changed and it is all for the best
The acting and the story telling in this film is absolutely top notch and it deserves to be ranked amongst the best of the genre. The only real downside to this film is that we will not be getting a sequel which really hurts.
I find that this film often gets forgot about when talking about superhero movies and that is an absolute shame. This is by far the best film with Wolverine as it goes deep into his emotions. This is not a typical superhero movie and it is better because of it.
Logan is a broken down her of the past who is struggling to get by in the present and I think that is a perfect setup for a great movie. All of the supporting characters are fantastic too, which helps push Logan in this film ultimately causing him to lay down his life for Laura which is a tear jerker. This film pulls on the heart strings while telling the best Wolverine story we have seen.
3. The Batman
I am not sure how controversial this pick is, but I absolutely loved this movie. I think the character of Batman is perfected in this film. The cinematography is perhaps the best we have ever seen from a Batman movie along with the acting. There is not a bad performance in the movie, but the one that sticks out is the Riddler. Paul Dano did an amazing job at portraying a different side of this character that most are familiar with. In my opinion, he is almost on par with Heath Ledger's Joker. That may be blasphemous, but I don't care. I will say it anyway.
Pattinson and Kravitz also play amazing roles. Many complained that Robert Pattinson Did not play a good Bruce Wayne, however i think that is exactly what the writers had in mind. This Bruce Wayne had not yet learned that both Bruce and Batman need to play a role in Gotham. I am more than excited for the next movie to see the progression of the character.
2. Avengers: Infinity War
This is the only entry from the MCU I have on my list which may be controversial, but again, I don't care. This movie though is absolutely ridiculous in the best way possible. This is a truly an awesome experience and one that we will likely not see again. Not only did they do an amzing job at developing the team and characters we have all come to love so much, but they brought in Thanos and gave him more depth than any other villain put on screen. Thanos does not carry this movie, but he pushes it beyond most other super hero movie.
The visuals in this film are also some of the best we have ever seen. The combat on different fronts and settings, the planets and cities shown, even when there is just dialogue, the background is absolutely stunning. I can't imagine another movie hitting the highs that this film does.
Here are some films that are great, but just did not make the cut.
- Wonder Woman
- Avengers Endgame
- Spiderman 2
- Captain America: Winter Soldier
- Batman 1989
- Into the Spider-verse
1. The Dark Knight
This is my favorite movie of all time. I do feel like The Batman gives us a better version of Batman, but The Dark Knight is a perfect story. The development of Bruce Wayne is perfect in this film, as well as the other characters such as Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes. Christopher Nolan is the best story teller alive and that is why he is able to elevate this Batman story to something more than just a superhero story. It feels like a real story about real people. While none of us are capable of being Batman, it is easy to put ourselves in his shoes because Nolan made him feel human.
The obvious and most popular talking point of this film is Heath Ledger. He set the bar for playing a villain in a superhero movie. These last 3 films on the list had great villains and this Joker is definitely the best out of the bunch. With a mix of the acting, storytelling and the effects, this is one of the best movies of all time.
