Disclaimer

In my review of the television show, Saturday Night Live with Timothee Chalamet as host, I will discuss some of the skits starring the actor, Timothee Chalamet. If you've watched Saturday Night Live or SNL before, you probably know there are numerous skits throughout the show. Of the skits in this SNL episode, I will only review some of the skits where Timothee Chalamet makes an appearance.

Timothee Chalamet - The Actor

Timothee Chalamet is an actor who first came to prominence after his award winning performance in the movie, Call Me By Your Name. In the film, Call Me By Your Name he starred as Elio, the love struck teen who became romantically involved with an older graduate student, Oliver, played by Armie Hammer.

Since the Call Me By Your Name movie was released in 2017, Timothee Chalamet has starred in other films including Beautiful Boy, Lady Bird, The King et. al. as well as his latest movie, Dune, which is pending a release date.

Timothee Chalamet Nerves as the Host of SNL

Public speaking is said to be one of the worst fears shared by many people. You may have recalled how nervous you were when you first spoke or gave a speech publicly. If so, you can possibly identify with Timothee Chalamet who is known to be shy and somewhat nervous when appearing on interview shows. Just imagine how nerve racking it probably was for him to find out that he would be hosting SNL in front of millions of people.

His nerves were easily visible to me on SNL. Specifically, I could tell Timothee Chalamet was nervous by observing his actions and speech. For example, during his monologue, sometimes he did not seem to know where to place his hands, which seemed by the way to be flushed. Also during his SNL introduction, he nervously acknowledged his mother in the audience with uncertainty when I’m sure he could see his mother clearly in the sparse audience. That being said, Timothee Chalamet’s nerves did not impact the way he delivered his script or acted in any of the SNL skits. To me, he only seemed nervous during his monologue.

The SNL Dynamic Duo of Timothee Chalamet and Pete Davidson

Speaking of Timothee Chalamet being nervous at first as the host of SNL -- I could almost feel his sense of relief when Pete Davidson joined him on stage at the piano during his opening monologue. There appeared to be a camaraderie between the two that seemed to help contain Timothee Chalamet’s nerves. In fact, as the show progressed, Timothee Chalamet seemed to lose his nervousness altogether.

The Best Skit on SNL Starring Timothee Chalamet

The genius pairing of Timothee Chalamet and Pete Davidson led to some funny, hilarious moments on SNL.

In my opinion, the best and top funniest skit that is currently garnering quite a number of views (in the millions) on youtube involves Timothee Chalamet and Pete Davidson's skit as famous SoundCloud hip-hop rappers. The name of the segment is XXL Rap Roundtable, which consisted of SNL regulars as host and Queen Latifah respectively. Questlove, who is the drummer on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon was also a guest during the fictitious roundtable discussion.

Whenever either Timothee Chalamet or Pete Davidson’s characters tried to express their opinions on hip-hop, it was obvious they were naive when it came to this genre of music.

The highlight of the skit was when the duo actually started “rapping” their hit song, and Questlove pretended to slap them both -- probably out of frustration. He, of course, apologized as soon as this happened.

I think the SNL tiny horse skit may tug at your heartstrings.

The Next Best Skit on SNL Starring Timothee Chalamet

The next best SNL skit involving Timothee Chalamet was a combination of a country drama and music video. The skit was about Timothee Chalamet’s character sadly saying goodbye to his friend, a tiny horse. Timothee Chalamet's character was letting the tiny horse go free since his family's farm business was in jeopardy financially. As a result, they could no longer afford to keep the tiny horse.

The twist was at the end of this skit, Timothee Chalamet's actor father obtained a loan so it was not necessary for him to get rid of his tiny horse afterall. However, by this time, the tiny horse had obtained recognition and fame including a star on Hollywood Boulevard. Also according to Timothee Chalamet’s character in this skit -- the tiny horse now belonged to the world and not him.

I think this skit may tug at your heartstrings. This is due in part to the expert acting of Timothee Chalamet. He showed how saddened he was to first say goodbye to his tiny horse, and secondly, when he had to give his tiny horse to the world.

As a side note, I was impressed that Timothee Chalamet sang the tiny horse song and carried the tune well. I would not be surprised if his song, Tiny Horse, is not uploaded to iTunes or to some other music service in the future due to its popularity.

An Honorable Mention for the Best SNL Skit Starring Timothee Chalamet

An honorable mention for the best SNL skit goes to the one where an SNL regular actor played the part of Dionne Warwick and Timothee Chalamet played the role of Harry Styles. I think he did an excellent job speaking with an English accent. The downside of this skit was that he impersonated Harry Styles for unfortunately, only a short time before he left the set.

In other words, in this particular skit there was too much of the Dionne Warwick's character and not enough of Timothee Chalamet's portrayal of Harry Styles.

The Worst SNL Skit Starring Timothee Chalamet

Even though I enjoyed watching all the skits, especially those starring Timothee Chalamet, there was some material that should have stayed on the cutting room floor. The worst skit involved a holiday baking contest where contestants won prizes if they had the best cake decorations. Almost all of the cake designs were disasters of course, including the one made by Timothee Chalamet’s character.

His cake resembled an obscene image that was also grotesquely pulsating. The color of the cake did not help this vision much. To put it bluntly, the cake looked like someone's backside. I won’t go into any more details here except to say that I found this skit to be tasteless.

Of course as an actor and host of the show, it would have behooved Timothee Chalamet to decline to participate in this particular skit. Of course this is a TV comedy show and none of the skits had any semblance of realism, so to some this may not be such a big deal.

That being said, I shudder to think how Timothee Chalamet’s mother who was in the audience felt when she saw him in this skit. Maybe Timothee Chalamet and his mother shrugged off this skit, thinking that it is all just a part of acting. Needless to say, I think this skit should have been omitted completely.

My kudos go to Timothee Chalamet who was a champ and I think did not downplay his acting skills as he participated in this hideous skit.

The Next Worst SNL Skit Starring Timothee Chalamet

The next worst SNL skit was the one where Timothee Chalamet played the part of a sports commentator along with Pete Davidson. They seemed to be disputing the fact that the Jets were a sub par team even though this football league lost quite a few games. Timothee Chalamet even showed documents to supposedly prove how great the Jets team was.

This was not a poorly executed skit either on Timothee Chalamet or Pete Davidson’s part. The problem was that Timothee Chalamet kept pressing his hand against the fake moustache he wore, I guess to keep it from falling off. This simple gesture was distracting and may affect your enjoyment of the skit.

Other Skits on SNL Starring Timothee Chalamet

By the way, there were a few other skits on SNL where Timothee Chalamet appeared, i.e., those dealing with the corona virus and the purchase of a Lexus automobile. These skits were creatively done, but did not stand out for me.

Badly Executed Impersonation of Timothee Chalamet on SNL

It would be amiss of me not to bring up the segment where a woman impersonated Timothee Chalamet. As people become famous, it is expected that someone will impersonate them. However, I think a woman impersonator of Timothee Chalamet was tasteless. To add insult to injury, this was done as his mother watched.

Additionally, the woman who impersonated Timothee Chalamet actions appeared exaggerated and unnatural. Hopefully this will be the last time she does this impersonation of him in public.

Assessment of Timothee Chalamet as Host of SNL

I think that Timothee Chalamet proved that he can bring in a large audience, whether they are from television, youtube or other media places. With the exception of Timothee Chalamet's nervousness during his monologue, I believe he did a relatively good job hosting the show as well as acting in some of the skits. In fact, I’m disappointed that he did not get more air time during the show.

As you know with most media outlets, it’s all about the numbers. I would not be surprised if he was asked to host the show again soon, as long as he remains popular, has a loyal following, plenty of fans and can continue to draw in big audience numbers.

Rating of Timothee Chalamet as Host of SNL

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with five stars being the highest, I rate Timothee Chalamet as the host of SNL 5 stars.
