The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Characters

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf

In August, fans of The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill, were able to explore more of the history and origins of Witchers, Geralt of Rivia, and Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, is an anime film that follows the story of Vesemir, witcher, and mentor to Geralt. The film acts as an isolated spin-off of The Witcher Netflix series, and an origin story providing context and history to the talented monster slayers, witchers.

Fans of the live-action series will be pleased with the history provided about the witchers and why so few of them remain in Geralt’s time. The movie, centered around Vesemir, provides information about the mentor who trained Geralt. Here, we discuss some of the leading characters that watchers will get to meet in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

Vesemir is known to fans as the mentor and father figure of Geralt, and the film provides history and context to his story. As a boy, Vesemir and his friend Illyana served as servants to a wealthy mistress. When his mistress fell ill, Vesemir assisted a witcher in performing an exorcism on her, and as such got his start as a witcher.

Leaving behind Illyana and a life with few choices, Vesemir joins the School of the Wolf, the training grounds for new witchers. Alongside other boys, he endures the challenging and often traumatizing training to be a witcher, as well as experiencing body-altering magic. Vesemir is considered one of the oldest witchers and is even said to have witnessed the construction of Kaer Morhen, the meeting place for witchers. As an adult, Vesemir begrudgingly spends time at Kaer Morhen training the young witchers and becomes well known as the fencing instructor.

Lady Illyana Zerbst

As children, Vesemir and Illyana are best friends and serve as servants to the same noblewoman. Similar to Vesemir, Illyana dreams of a life with more, with riches and a wealthy husband. Illyana continues to write to Vesemir, who relies on the letters during the most difficult aspects of his training. When Vesemir leaves their home to train to become a witcher, Illyana stays behind. After a series of fortunate events, Illyana is finally given the opportunity to have the life she has always wanted and uses her privilege to defend the witchers and the work they do.

Many years later, Vesemir and Illyana are able to reunite. Due to his physical alterations, Vesemir remains young, but time has aged Illyana. However, the connection between the two remains.
