The Top 10 Most Influential Hatsune Miku Songs

The evolution of Hatsune Miku

The evolution of Hatsune Miku

Who is Hatsune Miku?

Hatsune Miku, the virtual idol that managed to transcend the boundaries of the music world. If you don’t know who Hatsune Miku is then let me give you a brief summary of her history.

Hatsune Miku is a Vocaloid. What is a Vocaloid, you ask? Well, a Vocaloid is a singing voice synthesizer that allows users to create a virtual singing voice by just typing in the lyrics and melodies. That means that Vocaloids effectively grant lesser music producers the option to have a singing voice in their works without having to hire an expensive professional singer. Pretty neat, right?

Although there were Vocaloids that existed before Hatsune Miku made her debut, they were never much used or even known to the masses until Miku's popularity boom. It was Miku who single-handedly boosted Vocaloids popularity to extraordinary heights. So much so that nowadays many people treat them as idols rather than just applications that can generate singing sounds.

However, Miku didn’t boom in popularity the day she was released. No, the songs that people made using her is what lead her to that popularity. These songs were uploaded to Nico Nico Douga (A Japanese video streaming site like YouTube) and that site was there where they started gaining their popularity. Integrating Miku and other Vocaloids into the otaku culture thus finding a passionate audience who helped her get into the spotlight of the music world.

So here’s a list of the most influential Hatsune Miku songs that made her into to famous virtual idol that she is today:

10) Anata no Utahime – Boku-P

This song portrays Miku as, you guessed it, a virtual diva living in your computer. She sings about the day you first met, how you should only use lyrics that convey you true feelings, thanks you for choosing her among other Vocaloids and sings some more sweetness filled words until the songs ends.

This song is fairly enjoyable to listen to and unique form the other entries on this list as it just consists of Miku’s vocals accompanied by only a piano and nothing else. So if you like Miku, pianos and heavy doses of cuteness then this song is definitely for you.

9) Watashi no Jikan - Kuchibashi-P

In this song Miku breaks the fourth wall again by saying that she wants to become a “super-idol” and that she needs you, her master, to keep practicing and help her achieve that dream. All the while making references to Nico Nico Douga, saying that she will fail her goal to become an idol without it (I guess YouTube wasn’t as big on Miku back then)

Alright I realized that this song isn’t that much different from the previous entry in terms of lyrics but it does have a very catchy beat to go with it. In fact, it’s so catchy that it plays in the back of my mind when silence fills the room. I’m going to count that as a good thing since the song is about how I should keep thinking about her and this song did exactly that. Cute AND effective.

8) Hajimete no Oto – malo

Yet another song that portrays Miku as a self-aware virtual idol. Although this song shares the same premise as the two previous entries, it’s a lot more subtle in its lyrics in comparison to them.

The lyrics are about how Miku is happy to be “born” into this world and how she is able to listen to your voice, see the color of the sky, smell the scent of the wind and being able to contribute to the world’s beauty with her own voice trough people’s songs. Because of that, she is grateful that she is able to be everyone’s “first voice”. It’s actually a bit of a heart-breaking song if you if you think about it. She’s knows that she’s not real but is just grateful that she can make people happy by just singing for them.

7) Melt – Ryo supercell

Scroll to Continue

Melt tells about a girl (portrayed by miku) who is in love with a boy (presumably her “master”) trying to look cute in front of him and hoping to get his attention by dressing up to look “super cute” and how she feels like she is about to “melt” just by thinking about him.

The lyrics are pretty obvious and almost reads like a straightforward story rather than using metaphors like most songs do. That doesn’t diminish the fact that this song is heart inducing cuteness all the way trough. It’s really easy to sing along to and it has a likeability to it that anyone who hears this song will almost always instantly like it, whether they know of Hatsune Miku or not. What else can you expect from supercell besides greatness?

6) Rolling Girl – wowaka

It’s time to take a darker turn. “Rolling Girl” unravels the story about the struggles of a girl who gets bullied or just fails constantly to the point of having suicidal thoughts. Failing time and time again but her persistency makes her “keep on rolling”, enduring all of the pain in order to achieve her goal. In the end she realizes that she’s nowhere near close to achieving her goal and eventually decides to “hold her breath”, forever ending her constant pain and misery.

We went from songs about a spoiled cutesy virtual idol to about a damaged girl with suicidal tendencies. Talk about “taking the wrong turn”.I think we all can agree that Vocaloids allows music producers to express their own emotions and style of music perfectly as proven by the… shift in tone of this song from all of the previously mentioned songs. But I think we can all agree more that this song sounds BADASS, especially the piano at the beginning.

5) Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu - cosMo

The feels train returns with upgraded engines that go up to 240BPM! This song describes what happens when you try to uninstall Hatsune Miku. What does she do when you try to uninstall her? Well, she’ll start to freak out and sing at inhuman speeds of course!

“Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu” translates directly to “The disappearance of Hatsune Miku”. Fitting title as the song is about Miku’s acceptance of her uninstalling. She thinks herself as an imitation that has no personality that will literally disappear as people will start to realize that she is nothing compared to real human singers. During her acceptance she reminisces about all the good times she had with her master and apologizes for not being good enough, proving her remark that she has no personality to be wrong. A fast-paced yet touching song.

4) Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru♪ (Shite Yan yo) – ika

This song is the very reason why Hatsune Miku is as popular as she is today. The beginning of it all, this song is what established Miku to be the virtual idol that we know and love today. Of course this song didn't do so single-handedly but it is still the most viewed Miku song on Nico Nico Douga, gaining over 10 million views.

The song itself is pretty short, only barely reaching the 2 minute mark but it’s still extremely catchy and addicting. The song is about pretty much the same subject as the first three entries of this list. Telling about how miku is excited to be able to sing and that she's going to "beat you up" with her singing. What makes this song special is that this song is the one that started them all. Nothing more to say other than if you consider yourself a true Vocaloid fan, you will agree that knowing this song is considered to be mandatory.

3) Koisuru VOC@LOID - OSTER project

A love song from Miku to you! This song portrays Miku as your very own tsundere virtual ldol! In the beginning of this song she scolds you (her master) for not “using” her properly. She later apologizes to you for being too harsh on you as she knows that as an amateur master, you're also trying your best. as the song goes on she notices both your improvements as her master and her feelings of love for you to be growing with the passing of time.

It has a really pleasant melody to it and there’s something about the chorus makes me forget about any recent unpleasantries that were hanging on my mind which is always huge plus. But more importantly, this song makes me feel happy when I listen to it and there no greater compliment to a cutesy song than that.

2) Packaged – kz livetune

“Packaged” is the first song released by kz. There’s nothing quite like listening to early kz/livetune songs. They all just nail immersion so well and this song is no exception with an upbeat tempo that somehow manages to sound relaxing and beautiful at the same time. But the piano is definitely what I like most about the song. I feel like the piano is what ties the whole song into one nice elegant piece; I just LOVE it immensely!

Although more subtle than some of the previous entries, a quick look at the lyrics reveals that this song is about Miku being grateful for having been “unpackaged” and sings to express her gratuity. It’s nothing that you haven’t heard before but if being honest here, you don’t need to know what the lyrics mean in a livetune song as the music itself will perfectly tell you what it is about anyways.

1) World is Mine – Ryo supercell

You know this song is going to come up eventually. When you think of “Hatsune Miku” I bet the first song that comes out in your mind is this song. That’s nothing to be ashamed of by the way. As a matter of fact, this song is my first Vocaloid song too which is part of the reason why it ranked on number one on my list (hooray for bias). Yes, the famous “World is Mine” is a lot of people’s first Vocaloid song that they’ve ever heard and is arguably the most popular Vocaloid song of ALL TIME!

There’s nothing that I don’t love about this song. The guitar, bass, drum and that piano is just… perfect. The song portrays Miku as a tsundere who orders around a boy and wants nothing more than to be spoiled by him all day while she slowly realizes her growing feelings for him. Cute and simple just what you would expect from our spoiled princess diva.

“I'm the #1 princess in the world. And that's how you'll treat me, got it?”
