The Rose: A song, a life lesson

This presentation was done to add to this is heartfelt and original, a way to portray my thoughts as I know this song....the singing is also heartfelt, and my own voice. Obviously the song is not my own and I do not claim to have any rights to it. The hub is my own and I hope you enjoy reading it.

The Rose - Sung by Bette Midler

Most everyone has heard "The Rose" as sung by Bette Midler. The song was written by Amanda McBloom and first sung by Bette Midler in the movie of the same name. The movie was loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin.

But, "The Rose" is more than just a song. Of course you've heard the song and the lyrics...but have you really listened to the lyrics? Is it a sad, romantic song or is there more to it? Is it a life lesson?

The Rose - The Song

The song starts out by telling you how some people look at love, how they think of it as only something that hurts and destroys...but the song is telling you that's not so, it is something beautiful.

The song looks at all the bad things people think of when they think of love...but it goes on to tell you there is something more, something beautiful. "Love it is a flower, and you it's only seed" see the beauty in love? The song says if you are afraid of love and living you'll be missing out. "Its the heart afraid of dying that never takes a chance" ... we have to take chances to find love, even when there's hurt. Those chances may bring us love.

"Its the one who won't be taken who cannot learn to give" ... you can't find love if you're not willing to look for it. You can't live unless you try, you have to give love to get love.

It goes on to say, yes, its been tough, its been lonely but that doesn't mean you can't find love. Its not just for other people, stop, think is all around you and just when you think its the darkest and love will never find you, a 'seed' begins in your heart and you do find love; "far beneath the winter snow hides the seed that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes the rose."

Just a beautiful song of encouragement and light at the end of the tunnel. Cheering you on and saying everyone gets hurt but don't let it keep you down; when you're knocked down, get back up! Find that seed and that one love ... its there beneath the snow in your heart!

Thank you so much glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, I love the simplistic beautify of this hub. I love that you put your own voice to the song, without music, making it even more meaningful than if you had used Bette Midler's version. A+++++ on this one.

Mary Craig (author) from New York on September 29, 2012:

Lord you seem to see through me at every turn ;) Beauty, colors, and hope...not bad things to live by. Thank you friend.

Peg, so good of you to stop by. Sorry to hear about your reception problems, bummer!

Vincent, your comment, just like your hubs, is very warm and touching. I cannot imagine how these things can be fleeting too I need to come up to Canada and talk to those women? Thank you for the lovely comment and God bless.

Vincent Moore on September 29, 2012:

I appreciate how you expressed your love in song. You did a fine job Mary and I enjoyed listening to you. The Rose is tender and it's petals very fragile like our hearts. I know Janis is smiling down on you and Bette is moving over to let you sing with her. I loved your rendition and to love is nothing short of perfection. Some experience much of it in their lifetime, others very little. I am thankful that I enjoyed much of it in my earlier years. I love to love and be loved, yet it's very fleeting now. Peace and blessings I send to you on this day. Voted Up always.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on September 29, 2012:

Loved the song, the message, the movie, the voice. What an awesome song. I will revisit when the video is working. We have rain here and it is interfering with my reception. Loved the hub. Will be back. Peg

I've always loved this song! Yes, love can be like a rose: a rose with thorns that could be beautiful for a time and then wither away the next day. I personally think this song serves more like a life lesson :) Thanks for sharing this!

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on September 23, 2012:

Janine, that's what I thought. People often listen to songs but don't stop to think about the meaning behind the words. Glad you enjoyed.

Effer, you always blow me away with your comments! I took a chance and it worked out...glad you liked it. The words speak for themselves.

Very nicely done.....I liked your version of the song as well as the Midler version....but you did yours without music playing in the back...which is much harder. As for the rest of the make some very interesting points that register home. I have seen the movie The Rose but it was many moons ago....I will have to check it out again. Voted up and interesting and beautiful.....job well done.

Oh goodness, what a delightful hub! "The Rose" happens to be one of my favorite songs. Who wouldn't fall in love with it-the words, the melody and all.

I also like the idea of your raw video singing and whoever was the voice behind the song, it's awesome.
