How it started for me...

Okay so the first clip for The CupHead Show was released on June 11th 2021 featuring Wayne Brady as King Dice. This was surprising and a bit exciting, as I didn’t expect CupHead to become a franchise. This also meant that I couldn’t keep procrastinating buying CupHead on Steam, as I could be introduced to it through the cartoon.

The premise...

The CupHead Show is an animated adaptation of the hit indie game developed and published MDHR Studios that was released September 29th 2017. It entails the escapades of the brothers CupHead and MugMan who after venturing into The Devil’s Casino, they end up making a deal with the devil. If they can collect the soul contracts from his runaway debtors by midnight the following day, he might spare them.

What we know ao far, and the concluding thoughts

The CupHead Show was green lit by Netflix in July 2019, and was originally planned to premiere at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 15th 2020. This didn’t occur due to obvious reasons involving the current pandemic. But that would explain why the first clip premiered a year and one month later on Netflix’s official Youtube channel.

The series will be twelve episodes, and will be animated under “Light House Studios,” which animated El Deafo, and Little Ellen. It’s also being partially produced by King Features syndicate who hold the rights to Betty Boop and Popeye. The music will be composed by Eagle Plum who composed for Spongebob SquarePants, Harvey Beaks, and Star vs. The Forces of Evil.

CupHead will stream on Netflix on February 18th, and I’m eager to watch it. Because I'm a sucker for classic cartoons, and love how this is a love letter to those rubber hose animated gems.
