The Chances of Getting a Second Season of Darling in the Franxx

It’s been a while since we saw the last episode of Darling in the Franxx, and to be honest, a lot of fans were yet to move on. In terms of mecha anime standards, it may not reach the caliber of the Gundam franchise, nor the Evangelion series. And surely, it was never a Code Geass tier. But still, it managed to etch itself a place in the hearts of fans everywhere. Character development was its strongest point, and it gave the fans a highly adored female protagonist. We can’t get enough of Zero Two, and for me she is an icon. She needs a spot in the mecha pantheon, together with Amuro Ray, The whole of Evangelion casts, and many more. With this, Darling and the Franxx rekindled the mecha anime charm.

But it ended.

Fanboys and fangirls alike felt that the ending was too soon, and they want to see more. This anime could use a second season, to please those people who wanted more of Zero Two. Personally, I too was hoping for new fresh episodes, but the odds of getting one seems slim. And to be honest, it’s very unlikely that the developers will give the fans a new season, and we need to simply accept the fact that we saw the last of Zero Two. But then, I could be wrong.

Why We Need It.

Some memorable scenes.

Some memorable scenes.

The anime wasn’t exactly perfect. It was rushed and the characters lacked depth. In fact, the only interesting character here is Zero Two, and my friends reckoned that the developers focused too much on her, with the rest being ignored. Nevertheless, the show managed to charm its audience with its well-staged action scenes and, err, Zero Two. The anime was good in its own rights, and being loved by the fans is enough of a reason for a second season. There was a huge marketing demand, and now it was up to the developers to do the rest. With a growing fandom, the Darling in the Franxx is a franchise waiting to be born. With the release of the season two, the Gundam series, Evangelion franchise, and Macross will have a new rival to face. The mecha genre could also benefit from the additional season, with the possibility of introducing new story concepts in the future. A second season is a sure hit.

But for some fans, they simply want to see Zero Two again. They want to know more of what she and the rest become, and their lives beyond the final episode. But for others, the need for the next season goes beyond simple demand. New episodes will help the developers correct the flaws that plagued the show.

The Season Two Could Fix the Show

For the fans, this is unsatisfying.

But There is Silence!

What the fans are feeling right now.

What the fans are feeling right now.

Again, when I wrote this piece, there was no word about the second season. On average, it took two years for new seasons to come out, in terms of anime standards. There were words that the second season might be announced by late 2020s, but this article was written in mid 2021. The developers are still silent about the fresh seasons the fans were clamoring.

And this is not a good sign.

Going back to 2020, we saw popular animes making their presence felt to the fans. Kimetsu no Yaiba came back with a bang thanks to its awesome OVA. The Evangelion franchise finished the Rebuild series with its acclaimed theatrical release. And the anime news never came up short with announcement of fresh seasons from other popular series.

Then 2021 came. Attack on Titans series wows the fans with their own new season to boast. The Gundam series can’t be ignored also, with their Hathaway flash. And there were words that Kimetsu no Yaiba will soon release its next season.

And that leaves us wondering if the Darling developers are even thinking of the next season. As of now, we got no trailer, spoilers, or even a hint of teaser to keep our hopes high. There are vast markets for the anime, so developers won’t go broke. What’s stopping them?

The Critical Reactions of the Fans

More of that space battle.

More of that space battle.

According to what I heard, the mixed reviews by some fans was the worry point of the developers. To be honest, their reviews were indeed accurate, honest and truthful. Going back to what I said above, the unsatisfying ending was just the start. It got problems, from being slow to lacking of depth. And from the way I see it, it was a more sexualized and childish version of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

And now, the developers are worried that their second take might not sell among fans, and that was what stops them from giving us the new season. But again, who knows if one of these days they might change their minds.

The Studio Trigger

Other anime produced by Studio Trigger.

Other anime produced by Studio Trigger.

Here’s another not so encouraging sign. Studio Trigger, the one that gave us the Darling series has a track record of not producing sequels. They are not known for making extended anime series, and what was finished is finished. Their silence over new Darling anime is not helping either.

But things weren’t so hopeless.

Studio Trigger recently released new installment of SSSS.Gridman (SSSS.Dynazenon) and this might offer a sign for the hungry fans. Plus, Darling in the Franxx was a co-production by Studio Trigger and Cloverworks, which upped the chance of getting the series renewed.

Overall

Just real and honest talk here. After weighing the odds of possible series renewal, the chance that we are getting a new season is slim. In fact, by percentage, we are only getting 30% of a chance of seeing Zero-Two again. That's because:

  1. Despite of the great market potential, the developers and the producers remained silent about the series
  2. Two years later, we are yet to see a hint of spoiler of teaser.
  3. Studio Trigger has a record of not producing sequels.
  4. The mixed reviews give the developers second thoughts.

Yet, here’s something to hold on to for the fans

  1. It was co-produced by Cloverworks.
  2. The fan demands.

Overall, maybe we need to move on and be contended with the rushed ending. There are still the Evangelion series and the Gundams that could keep us happy.

But then, I could be wrong.
