Good Horror/Scary Movies to Watch on a Rainy Day

If you like to watch movies that will really scare you, this is the list for you. I love horror movies, but I find that a lot of them are either unbelievable or riddled with so much CGI that I have to turn them off.

This list includes some of the best horror movies for that rainy day when all you want to do is snuggle up and enjoy some old-fashioned, terrifying films.

I have included a rating system that indicates the movie rating, my age limit suggestions, and quality of script, editing, acting and story. I hope you enjoy watching and reading about some of my favorite horror movies. These films may make you want to sleep with the light on.

If you have any favorites you would like to add, leave them in the comments section.

The Orphan Trailer

The Orphan

After watching this movie, I walked out of the theater and felt that eerie feeling you get when you think someone is watching you. This film is about a family that adopts a disturbed child from an orphanage. She is sweet and shy, painting alone in a room while the other children are playing outside.

The actress who plays the girl in this film does a spectacular job! Her role is so deep and challenging, and she is perfectly terrifying down to the look in her eyes. This eerie film has the most unexpected plot twist ever--one that you will never see coming from a mile away.

Overall, this film is one of the best horror movies I have seen in a while and I suggest you watch it if you can handle it. You may have to sleep with a night light after watching it, though, so be sure to have a buddy with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose Trailer

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Now, this film is one of the gems because although you may think exorcist movies are overrated and lame, I think you should hold your tongue before watching this one. This film uses real audio from the actual exorcism of Emily Rose, a young woman who came home from college possessed with an evil spirit. The movie is a documentation of the court case against the priest that performed her exorcism. They were trying to pin him for murder, even though he was trusted by Emily and her family to perform the exorcism.

The movie has two different plot lines: the case, and the life and death of Emily Rose. I love this film because of the intricate attention to detail and the realistic story line. The court case alone would have made an excellent film, but watching the actual events occur makes the viewer see the whole picture regardless of the narrative.

This will remain one of my favorites because I have watched it more than once and have still been terrified after each viewing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Paranormal Activity Trailer

Paranormal Activity 2 Trailer

Paranormal Activity (1, 2, and 3)

These films are shot on cheap cameras and made with the most minimal budget. They are shot like home movies and use footage from real actors carrying the cameras as well as some security cameras. You may think that is lame and that's probably why you haven't seen them yet, but let me tell you, that is the best part of the film.

I watched all of these in the theaters. The first two, I watched in a nice theater--brand new with comfy seats and clean floors--and the final one, I watched in a dirty theater where the projector is unsteady and fuzzy. The last one was ten million times more scary because of this. The films are so candid and real that they seem to peer right into the lives of the families it documents. Even watching them on a home television is frightening and very satisfying.

The film is about demons and every clip you will see in the trailers are not actually in the film. That's how they keep from spoiling you. I love it, because I come in with so many expectations and then get scared of the unknown.

Paranormal Activity follows Katie and her boyfriend, who has become obsessed with documenting the strange things that occur in their house when they sleep. His obsession goes too far when he begins to taunt the spirit, causing everything to go downhill. I won't spoil the others for you if you haven't seen them, but I assure you, you will have trouble sleeping if you choose to watch them.

The Skeleton Key Trailer

The Skeleton Key

Kate Hudson stars in this film as a in-home nurse. She finds herself seeing and hearing things that make her want to learn more about the history of the home she works in. I enjoyed this film because of the intricate detail as well as the mythological content.

You see Hudson in a lot of romantic comedies, but in this film, she is much different. She plays a stronger character that aims to solve a mystery that hasn't been solved for years.

The movie is set in New Orleans and has themes including witch doctors and voodoo. If you want a different kind of horror movie, this is the one for you. There is just enough suspense and mystery to keep your mind active throughout the whole film. Unlike some of the others on this list, the ending has a resolution. I hope you enjoy it.

Hide and Seek Trailer

Hide and Seek

A young Dakota Fanning stars in this spooky film about a girl whose mother has committed suicide. The father moves her into a new home, away from their past, and tries to focus on the future. The daughter has her own way of coping, that involves her newfound imaginary friend, Charlie.

Her father is played by Robert De Niro, who is exceptional in this film. The father begins to wonder if something is wrong with his daughter when she begins participating in horrifying and negative activities.

This film has an epic twist and is captivating from start to finish. I heard nothing about this film when it first came out (but I lived on an island, so what do I know?). After I saw it, I was shocked that more people hadn't told me how good it was.

If you are in the mood for a disturbing, yet fascinating film, this one's for you. Enjoy.

The Sixth Sense Trailer

Classic: The Sixth Sense

Now, as the classic horror film, I have picked The Sixth Sense (instead of The Shining because of its popularity). This film stars Bruce Willis as a therapist sent to help a little boy who believes that he sees dead people. (You may remember the famous line or seen spoof shirts that read "I see dumb people.")

This movie is timeless as it never ceases to scare me--even after I have seen it multiple times. I believe I was the most scared when I watched it at a friend's house with all of the lights off--our teenage minds were scarred from the gruesome images.

The cinematography is beyond fabulous and the infamous twist will have you rewinding to search for clues. Make sure you watch out for the symbolism in the color red. Director and writer, M. Night Shyamalan, is genius in his execution.

Even if you have seen it before, this film is great for one of those rainy days.

Tough call. As a huge Bruce Willis fan, (plus an all-around great story) I'm leaning toward The Sixth Sense, however, I do have to admit that Hide and Seek is giving it a run for it's money! These are great films and everyone should see them. The only other scary movie I add to my rainy days? Thirteen Ghosts.

Pheobe, how funny that your brother would hide it from you. Haha. I love the Sixth Sense and also could watch it over and over again. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Phoebe Pike on December 28, 2011:

The Sixth Sense was one of those movies I could watch over and over again... and I did. My sister and I would watch it all the time until my brother hid it on us because he was sick of it being on all the time.

Brittany Kennedy (author) from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on December 26, 2011:

Rednickle, You're right about Hide and Seek and you should totally watch The Skeleton Key. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

rednickle from New Brunswick Canada on December 26, 2011:

Really grand list. As a matter of fact, i think i would watch skeleton key today seeing it is the only horror movie i have not seen in your collection.By the way Hide and Seek was not so popular for sometime after its release so that is probably why you did not hear of it when it was initially released

Hiya Brittany, the only one on your list that I had seen is the last one, The Sixth Sense. I love that movie.. it was awesome and disturbing at the same time.. "I see dead people." I love the way you rated the movies you selected, and your movie reviews are short but packed with interesting info. Voted up and awesome. Cheers!

Have a nice day,

This is a great list. I'm the ultimate horror fan and I'm only scared of one movie: The Shining. I think it's the lady in the tub who scares me. Plus I love Jack Nicholson. I like the way you have included ratings and movie information. Very unique.

Brittany Kennedy (author) from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on December 20, 2011:

Thank you, Amy. I haven't seen the Haunting in Connecticut, but I have seen The Others and that was terrifying! Thanks for sharing.

Amy DeMarco from Chicago on December 20, 2011:

I only want to add two more: Haunting in Connecticut and The Others.
