Every season of Game of Thrones gets better and better in the costume department as new characters are introduced and old ones are expanded. In Season 4 the characters get new cuts, new colors and new styles.
This List looks at the Top Ten Best Female Costumes from Game of Thrones Season 4. The precious seasons also have their own pages and when season five is complete is done except a page.
Season 4 was also considered one the best season of the show. Variety ranked it second overall with season six taking the top spot.
Costumes were judges by aesthetics, how they reflect character and memorability.
Costumes were designed by Michele Clapton
Margaery in Mourning
Margaery was first introduced in season two when she was married to Renly Baratheon.Since her introduction she has worn blue costumes that have been revealing in nature but after the death of Joffrey, her second husband, for the better part of two hours, she dons a black costume.
This costume is in her standard style but the break from blue is a nice change. The gold pattern is sombre to fit with the mourning grab look even if this costume is more for show than any actual feeling she had for her cruel stupid husband.
She is also seen wearing this costume during Tyrion’s trial.
Daenerys & Missandei
This is a tie as the cut of their two dress is just too similar to pick one over the other. There is some differences between the two dresses besides the color but for this list they are together.
Both dresses have a metal collar that is like Daenerys’ Yunkai dress from season three. The neckpiece leads into beautiful gathering on the bodice. Like most costumes worn by Daenerys it has both a strong powerful tone coupled with a vulnerability that suits her character.
This is the dress that Daenerys is wearing in the introduction picture.
Cersei’s Trial gown
Much like Margaery, Cersei wears more black this season. This is the costume she wears during Tyrion’s trial.
It is in the trademark King’s Landing style but with a heavier fabric that looks like it’s a patterned velvet edged with a gold-green silk.
While it has a sombre tone, there is something vengeful about it which makes it perfect for Cersei.
Missandei in Blue
Unlike in season three, Daenerys‘ servant, Missandei gets more costume changes. T
his one is a new cut but has that has Essos ease of construction.
The dress has a wrapped neckline that goes over the bust but then smooth out over the bodice which gives the dress. visual interest. The shade of blue is also really pretty.
Daenerys gets a lot more costumes in season four as she moves from conquering Slaver’s Bay to ruling Meereen as Queen.
This costume is more revealing than some of her past costumes but it reads powerful with its wide shoulder details and criss-cross details that form a diamond. It’s a bit of a new color for her as it’s silver but it still fits in to her white and blue looks.
This look embodies Daenerys as the Dragon Queen.
Ellaria Sand is a new character introduced in episode one of season four. She is the paramour of the second prince of Dorne, Oberyn Martell. As is standrad with House Martell, she favors shades of orange.
This costume of Ellaria’s is what she is wearing when she is first introduced and she wears it throughout season four most notably at Tyrions’ trial by combat when Oberyn is killed by the Mountain.
The orange color has a gold tone and features a plunging v-neck. There is also leather detailing at the shoulder forming a collar.
The costume is revealing yet strong and there is a great ease of construction that is common to Game of Thrones but done is a new way.
This costume is another new cut for Daenerys. It’s a bit more conservative of costume for her. It features a key-hole neckline. The fabric of the bodice has a patterned and is blue. The skirt is made from a pleated white fabric.
Daenerys wears this costume when she locks up two out three of her dragons and is the final costume she wears in season four.
Ellaria at the wedding
Ellaria wears this gown when she attends King Joffery and Margaery Tyrell’s wedding. It’s play off the like yje other costume she wears throughout season four but it turned up to eleven.
Again with see the plunging v-neck line and she wears a matching bra-like garment that has a pattern on it. It also looks like she is wearing a cape with pointed shoulder detail that give her an air of power. The costume is finished with a chain-headpiece.
She looks very much like a viper in this costume.
Dark Sansa a.k.a Alayne Stone
Towards the end of season four, Sansa takes on the name Alayne Stone, Littlefinger's niece (though the cover was his daughter in the books).
This costume of Sansa is the last costume she is seen wearing in season four and it's only shown for a moment but it makes a strong impact.
This costume is a complete and utter shift for Sansa’s character. It is all black with some texture on the bodice and a feather cape There is also feather-like detail on the cuffs.
Margaery's Wedding Gown
One of the big episodes of season four was episode two, when Margaery and Joffrey get married. It's also the episode where Joffrey is poisoned and dies.
Margaery’s wedding gown is over-the-top which is fitting for the would-be Queen of the realm.
As befits her house, Margaery’s wedding gown is decked out in roses and throne details. The back of the gown is backless and the train is cloth roses, which makes it grand and showstopper.
The bodice is thrones with metal thrones sewn in and the shoulder flared out to give her a powerful edge.
Her crown has depicts thrones growing around the stag horn which showoffs Margery's influence over Joffrey.
Game of Thrones may have ended poorly but the costumes were still amazing. What was your fav costume from the show's run?
