The Benefits of Playing a Musical Instrument

So Why Should I Learn a Musical Instrument?

Musical instruments can teach us many things about ourselves and other people. They can show us that we have miles to grow in terms of our physical, mental, and emotional abilities. When I started playing violin, I wondered, "Why on Earth am I learning how to play this instrument?" But as I got older, I realized that it helped my hearing and made it more fine-tuned and sensitive to differences in pitches. Violin also helped me lose weight since I was constantly moving.

Musical instruments are important in a child's and even an adult's development. Children learn to empathize with others as they understand the emotions the composer was trying to convey through the piece. Playing the violin, (or any other musical instrument) has helped me tremendously in becoming a better person. I am able to connect with other people on a deeper level and am able to understand subtle changes in a person's voice, tone, or mood, since music is all about emotions and feelings.

Musical instruments help us become better people in so many ways, and music in general lets us understand people better. Music, when properly taught, can become a major component of someone's life. I love music because not only is it enjoyable to listen to, but it is also enjoyable to actually play the pieces you love.

Physical Benefits of Playing a Musical Instrument

When we play a musical instrument, we involve different muscles and have to strengthen some to play it well. For example, when playing violin, I have to carefully draw the bow across the string with my fingers and elbow and arm. It makes my arm more coordinated and more fine-tuned. Playing a musical instrument can help you lose weight if it involves some movement.

Emotional Benefits

With music, we are able to express our emotions on a deeper level and able to release the pent up rage or anger or stress we have in our lives by playing our instrument with passion. With my violin, I am able to convey hope, fear, optimism, love, and hate through my bow and hands. I am able to emotionally express what is difficult to express alone through words. Music to me is like releasing all those pent up emotions and releasing them like a slow river or a flood. But it is beyond the power of words, in my opinion.

Mental Benefits

When reading music, we have to figure out things like key, which is the note which the piece is centered around, or we have to figure out the rhythm. Music is mentally strenuous, which is why I believe it helps us become mentally more adept at focusing in on challenging tasks. Music helps our minds grow and blossom into something stronger. Music is so powerful since it helps us in so many different ways. I am blessed to be a violinist who has been practicing for more than a decade now. I think if you start today you can become any skill level you desire. Just don't waste any more time!

So How Do I Get Started?

One way you can get started in learning a musical instrument would be to go to a music teacher in your area and find someone who is good at teaching beginners the fundamentals of music. Without learning the basics well, music is very hard to practice and play at a good level. Also, it is known that musical instruments can be expensive and hard to purchase, so it may be wise to rent one before buying one just to make sure you like the instrument. Music is like a puzzle that when solved can lift your spirits up, and let you understand people and the world better. Remember the old Korean saying, "Starting is half the task!"
