WORST #1 Songs of the 1980s.

80's music will always strike a chord with me because i was a DJ during this period. My first gig at the age of 14 was in 1985. As I got older though and my tastes changed from being exposed to all types of music new and old, some of my old favorites started to sound dated...or, just being real here, Hollow. Empty. Plastic. I still love 80's music just not all of it.

But I definitely loved many of them back then because these 45 sleeves are scanned from my collection so that is proof of guilt right there. Okay...let's go!

Hopefully you enjoyed laughing at these songs too.  Yes I bought them all when they were popular, but then again, I was a DJ and was required to have all the big hits.  Luckily my tastes have evolved over the years.  If you still love these songs and are offended, I'm sorry...sorry your tastes never evolved anyway.

Comments...aka your chance to defend these awful songs.

Hxprof on November 29, 2017:

I've always liked "Walk Like an Egyptian", and always will; that song is just TOO MUCH FUN!

Emily J. on November 02, 2017:

Hey, I LIKE Satisfied, When I See You Smile, and Open Your Heart! What are they doing on this list?!?

On the other hand, I can't really stand Died In Your Arms (whiny and hypocritical), Oh Sheila, Do That To Me One More Time, Girl I'm Gonna Miss You, both of Lisa Lisa's hits, and what is possibly Chicago's worst song (lack of Cetera doesn't help). And Monkey is rather nonsensical.

Paul kelly on June 24, 2017:

The correct answer is Black Water by the Doobie Brothers. "I wanna hear some funky dixieland. Pretty baby won't you take me by the hand." Aaaaaaahhhhh!

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on July 11, 2015:

Wow, you rap almost as bad as the real Will I Am! LMAO

Francisco on January 06, 2015:

'That's What Friends Are For' makes me wanna puke. Definitely the worst song ever written.

I'm so right on June 20, 2014:

you're an idiot! these songs are the 80's!

Iz on October 02, 2013:

I have 93 of these songs on my ipod! Love them all except for 7 of them!!

Doogie on December 29, 2012:

wow, it's funny how defensive everyone is of Michael Jackson now that he's dead, when before he died, those same hardcore fans could have cared less about him. DJ Funktual is right. Bad was definitely an inferior album with some inferior number one singles that haven't aged well, when compared to the brilliant Thriller. and contrary to popular belief, Michael was not still the world's biggest and most respected popstar by the late 80s Bad era. sure, he still had plenty of fans and could score number one singles, but a lot of people were starting to think he was really weird because of his then-unexplained skin color lightening, odd plastic surgery, and strange personal behavior. he didn't "rule" the entire 1980s decade like today's teenagers who weren't alive then tend to believe. his early 80s Thriller era was his only real era of rule as the "world's biggest popstar" in the 1980s.

Therater on December 19, 2012:

Kelly on November 04, 2012:

I love this list - it would make a great play list for 80's night. Great mix. one mans 100 worst is another man awesome playlist - glad to have a reference to these songs in one place!

ScotsmanRex on October 22, 2012:

This list sucks. Just one person's lousy attempt to make fun of others because their own life sucks. You wish you had a hit record but are 2 talentless to even back a record that will sell (see William Hung)

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on August 11, 2012:

Are you people stupid or something? i LOVE Michael jackson! The difference is that I am of aware of the good MJ like "Off the Wall" & "Thriller" and you guys actually believe that the "Bad" album was equally good when it was in fact, not even close to as good. just because it's MJ doesn't make it great. AND just because i say one of his #1 songs wasn't very good does not mean i don't like HIM just the song. Jeez, like talking to teenagers over here.

Nichole on August 06, 2012:

What are you crazy? Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody and definitely not Michael Jackson's Bad, are you serious. The 80's was Michael's decade anything he put out or touched was considered triple platinum not just because he was the hottest thing around, but because his music was the shit. All of these songs are not bad you just don't have taste in real, pure music.

Martin Pagels on July 31, 2012:

what a shitty website, most of those songs are great . You don't like Michael Jackson, but many young people today love his music and the music from other artists of the 80's .

adam on July 03, 2012:

I hate the song Footloose. I'm glad to see it's on the list.

ruen125 on July 02, 2012:

horribe list you put michael jackson on this list almost all of his songs made it on the top 100 and stayed there and ghostbusters is the theme song to the greatest ghost movie of basically the 20th century. make a list of the songs of the 2000s and I will always agree

Jonesy on June 29, 2012:

Jack & Diane is so bad it should take up the top 10 slots all by itself. Where Do Broken Hearts Go could take up the next 10 slots. I don't see either of them on this list.

doogie on June 10, 2012:

i agree, some of these songs, including Wild Wild West, are fun and actually pretty good even when you listen to them now, more than 20 or 25 years after they came out. sure, a lot of them are crap and never get played anymore, but i think the good ones you still hear made the list just because they sound "so 80s." like every decade, the 80s had great pop songs and bad pop songs, and sometimes the bad ones shot to the top of the charts.

Double0Individual from City of the Angels on May 25, 2012:

Well, I have to agree with 99% of your choices, some pretty flaccid stuff - BUT - I just heard WILD WILD WEST - by the Escape Club recently and it surprised me at how really good that song was! Even included some decent rappish lyrics and the beat keeps chuggin'. The '80s were the last bit of fun (like the '60s) when everyone got to express themselves openly and songs like these kinda made the '80s what they were: kitschy, colorful, overblown, but most of all fun and unfortunately the last era of innocence.

Eduardo the Puerto Rican. on May 18, 2012:

QUEEN didn't make the list either because they didn't have number ones of the 80's or Queen had good music of the 80's Under Pressure, and Another one bites the Dust are great 80's QUEEN songs.

doogie on May 05, 2012:

i also find it interesting how different pop music was in the early-early 80s (before new wave artists hit it big on the pop charts) when compared to the late 80s. from about '80 to '82, soft adult contemporary artists like Barbara Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Kenny Rogers and forgotten leftovers from the 70s like KC and the Sunshine Band and Captain and Tenille could actually still score number 1 pop hits. but by the late 80s, it was all about hair bands and slick electronic and synthesized pop tracks from new young artists like Bobby Brown, Debbie Gibson, Rick Astley, Milli Vanilli, and New Kids on the Block scoring number 1 hits.

doogie on May 03, 2012:

it's funny how the number 1 songs of the 80s are the songs from the decade that never get played on classic hit radio stations anymore. there are only a few on this list that i still hear on commercial radio, along with the great new wave and hair band songs of the 80s that still do get commercial radio airplay. i'm actually surprised that a lot of these were number 1 hits. i mean seriously, MJ's embarrassingly bad Dirty Diana got to number 1?

C on April 15, 2012:

MANIAC - michael sembello, WTF this is a classic.

boognish on April 05, 2012:

I have to say, Satisfied by Richard Marx is 80's cheese in all its glory and I bump it regularly. No shame.

Michael K. on April 02, 2012:

I think the author is confusing "100 #1 songs from the 1980's which I don't care for" with "100 Worst #1 Songs of the 1980's"

This is the musical equivalent of some stat nerd's "100 Worst Minor League Baseball Stadiums" post on

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on February 28, 2012:

lmao! what a joke!

djmessie from World Known on February 28, 2012:

i have to post again im going through the list You shouldn't be a DJ or anything you hate on all the good music and is people like you that give us producers remixer dj bad name i have never seen any of your stuff on youtube or anywhere so i dont know were your coming out like you are big shot. You can manage and record store that dont mean shit lol... dude you might old but for sure DUMB. go back to mucis school 101 if u need help hit me up I do have 1 hits remixes and beats on beatport and more look me up and learn ,,,

Vic Messie Martinez on February 28, 2012:

Im a Producer/DJ and who ever made this list should be shoot because there are a lot of song in this list that were great hits and we still rock and we still make remixes of it, you should learn music before posting this...v

Rick on February 25, 2012:

Thanks for the list even though you're probably tired of seeing new comments after 3 years haha. What's so revealing is the difference between the mainstream pop songs and the more underground stuff going on like Meat Puppets, Smiths, the Fall, Cowboy Junkies and Sonic Youth. The 80s also had good dance music like New Order and Public Image Lmtd. Rap was still maturing but at a fast pace as someone already mentioned. Hell, even the underground metal like Slayer and Celtic Frost was worlds better than freaking Poison and Cinderella lol. You just gotta take the good with the bad in every decade.

Nick Varadinov on February 04, 2012:

I don't know mate, I know a thing or two about music and this chart of yours does not seem right. I can prove it, of course - . I am just 21 years old but I have learned to listen all kind of music - 80's, 90's, 70's, even the crap that has been made today and I just have to say something to people like you who give rush general opinions - open your mind a bit. I hate, of course, Starship and Prince, but to put Genesis, Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams (I haven't even read the whole list) on such a list - you can not be sane! P.S. Sorry for the rude language!

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on February 03, 2012:

None of these went to #1 DJ. And #2 & #8 on your list are incredible songs.

DJ on February 02, 2012:

Bon Jovi...

You're just trolling us, aren't you?

bonjovifan on January 09, 2012:

get your facts right bon jovi has never done a bag song bon jovi rocks

James GreyWolf on January 08, 2012:

Ok. Maybe it's just me, but... Bobby McFerrin? The man is an incredible vocalist and vocal instrumentalist. And Don't Worry, Be Happy was a joke. I mean... he wrote it as a joke. The fact that Robin Williams was involved in the making of the video should prove that. It was a fun little ditty.

jock on December 25, 2011:

on the ball kid perfectly right top listing, all and i mean crap songs.

Ethan_D on December 03, 2011:

Good job overall but some of these should NOT be on here. Genesis is AWESOME and they are #1. GRRR

Ali on December 02, 2011:

My God... some of the best songs of the last century are in here o.o

NAD on November 16, 2011:

Just because these songs are considered the worst #1's that doesn't mean they're bad songs. They're dated to be sure but many of them are quality tunes.

alex on November 02, 2011:

oh come on how can you not like Maniac, Flashdance or Maneater?

cheesy awesomeness!

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on October 24, 2011:

I never heard that before, thanks dumbass

Jeff on October 23, 2011:

Hey dumbass, Alec John Such did not quit Bon Jovi. He got fired because he wasn't playing well and was messing up on stage. Get your facts right before you criticize people who are more talented than you.

Guest on October 20, 2011:

you mentioned "on my own" at least twice. is the song that bad?

ManlyPoetryMan from (Texas) Boldly Writing Poems Where No Man Has Gone Before... on October 07, 2011:

Starship has two in the top 10!? "We Built This City" By Starship was just ranked in a poll by Rolling Stone as the worst hit of the '80' you were pretty much "in-range" with your list. I think "Mickey" should stand head and shoulders above all the others as the worst one of the '80's...but that's just my opinion. Oh No...I can hear the words to that song in my head still...from only just mentioning it by name. AAAAGGGGHHH!

Carrie on September 26, 2011:

Ha, I have almost every one of these songs on my iPod. Oh well, Thanks for the list, You Rock! :D!

Burd Turglar on September 16, 2011:

Look Away by Chicago has got to be in the top 5 of the all time worst songs list. It's a song about a guy admitting to crying like a little b^^^h and not wanting some chick to see it? She should look and laugh right in his wussy face.

Jake on September 11, 2011:

Thanks for making up a list of the songs I love!

Mr. Right All The Time on August 20, 2011:

ALL the songs by Guns and Roses..... Axl Rose sounds like Ethel Merman. Too bad they didn't have a better singer... the music was good.

BonJoviFan on August 12, 2011:

Ahem! WHY IS BON JOVI ON THIS LIST!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! It's worthless and someone like you should actually think and not just sit there and slap random songs onto the screen. Seriously it's stupid. Get a brain and LEARN! sorry. Had to get it off my chest

Anonymoose on July 31, 2011:

Thanks dude! Won a bet with this, the guy thought there weren't any bad songs in the 1980's, but apparently he is a HUGE fan of Michael Mcdonald, lol.

love80smusic on July 29, 2011:

You have a song on twice. On my Own by Patti Labelle. 59 and 67 Must have not really liked that song.

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on July 08, 2011:

I hate Coldplay too, lol. I love the 80's but the good 80's like The Clash, Police, Prince, Chaka, MJ, etc.

It's over 14,200 followers now and you don't have a book.

Bob on July 08, 2011:

Some songs are actually great!

Let me guess, another one who adores Coldplay?

Even the most cheesy 80's song is miles better than the crap we hear today, including coldplay.

Congrats on your 12000 followers..... still a nobody in my book!

Marky Mark on June 10, 2011:

Unless I missed it while scanning through here- "Carrie" by Europe- Terrible song!!

mike on April 05, 2011:

A lot of these songs are good.

Chris Hampton-Pidgeon on April 01, 2011:

I was a teenager in the early 80's at college and having a great time. While I got to say we had fun with these songs I got to agree that most of them sucked. Real nice list you got here but one is missing, Can't remember the name of the song but it was by a group call The Pink Flamingos. Caused a stir in the UK cause I remember the news reports about how shops said they wheren't selling the record but BBC said it was UK no.1... Chart fixing at it's best... oh, and how about Flock of Seagulls.... wow, I think I could keep adding to your list.... All the best to all out there. Live life, have fun.

Lynn on March 20, 2011:

This is BULL SHIT. I am an 18 year old girl. Did NOT grow up in the 80's, yet I love them, for most of the songs the lyrics are the best part of the song. I disagree with this list 100%. I am curious what you guys actually call "good" music nowadays......

vibrantflame on March 09, 2011:

"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is awesome! God I love that song. Then again, I unabashedly love a lot of 80's music. Especially compared to a lot of the stuff passing for music now a days.

johann00 on March 06, 2011:

Why are some people getting their panties in a bunch. Its just his opinion. Its for fun, I think a lot of the songs are right on point. Just plain bad!! The 80's had a lot of bad music, but that's just my honest opinion.

Topmodelof2011 on February 25, 2011:

Brian Dean on February 09, 2011:

Just out of curiousity, where would you place "Roxanne Roxanne" by UTFO? Would it be towards the bottom of the list of 80s hits?

What's interesting was that from 84 through 86 you could hardly escape the "Roxanne Wars" in one form or another whereas nowadays nobody talks about them at all.

jenni48 on January 28, 2011:

add Heartlight by Neil Diamond LOL! I love little squishy ET! (wait did this ever make it to #1 who cares shoulda if it didn't!) I will admit it is one of the few sleeves I have left. The rest of my 45's are in round puke green "Disc Go" cases. And I have 100's. My Daughter snuck some to hang on her walls with thumb tacks what's up with that? My treasures now hopelessly scratched :(.

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on January 27, 2011:

I re-edited just so I could explain it all for you. Thanks for the motivation.

DJ Ambien on January 27, 2011:

Your disclaimer says "all photos scanned from your 45 collection." Apparently, you didn't think it sucked when you threw down $1.99 for those particular songs at Sam Goody. Explain yourself.

PS: I'm the person with "Satisfied" by Richard Marx in my iPod. Yes, I'm the one.

Karen from Salem, OR on January 15, 2011:

I am not AT ALL ashamed to admit that I like A LOT of these songs... there really are only a few that I either don't like or have never heard. But I'm only 25, so I guess I have an excuse, haha. To be honest, this list made me wanna get some songs that I forgot I didn't have! Thanks, and great hub!

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on January 12, 2011:

LMAO! Born in 71, graduated in 89, DJing since I was 13 and managed a record store in high school. I am one of the most famous djs on youtube with almost 12,000 subscribers worldwide and I get interviewed regularly..........and you kw? Your the guy who sticks up for New Kids on the Block and Jefferson Starship! Buahahahaha! There was lots of great music in the 80's dumbass, but this ain't it. Try my other hub the 450 greatest songs of the 80's since you are obviously friggin clueless.

kw on January 12, 2011:

You are a moron that probably needs to pull their pants off the ground & not wear your hat like someone just slapped you from left field, I see at least 2 songs that were definitely from the 70's, & several songs that you repeated throughout your list. And who are you to make a list? Just because you put DJ in front of some stupid hip hop wannabe name doesn't make you an expert on...well, anything. LMAO what a dork

PW on January 12, 2011:

This list obviously made up by someone who wish they had lived in the 80's but didn't, dont be hatin because all the music these days suck

Andoy on January 12, 2011:

Not the greatest songs of all time, but still better than what's being foisted on us today.

GT on December 17, 2010:

Not sure if this song made number one but where is Joan Jett's: I Love Rock n Roll ?? Ugh....worst cheesiest song ever!

Jay on December 08, 2010:

How could you leave off Love Will Lead You Back?! Certainly one of the most annoying songs ever!

Timewarp on November 11, 2010:

This is a great list, I had no disagreements until 25+26 ... Centerfold and Maneater were kinda cool!

Mouse on October 17, 2010:

All of these songs sound horribly DATED which is absolute proof of their suckage. I notice Neil Young isn't on this list....oh that's right, he didn't sell out and therefore nothing of his is dated suckage.

Stefanie on September 29, 2010:

I love almost all of these songs!!! Thanks for a putting together a great list of all my faves :)

Number6 on September 29, 2010:

Michael Jackson? What have you got against the Bad album, anyway? It ain't about the music Bud- you just didn't like the image change.... on September 05, 2010:

u rock

dennis lloyd on September 02, 2010:

ok a song that starts with the first line like this

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on August 20, 2010:

Phil Collins' late stuff is terrible, be honest.

svarun from Kranj on August 16, 2010:

I agree with 95% of this list. But some of them are ok, like "Maneater".

HTJ on July 26, 2010:

There are about 231 unique number 1 songs of the 80s. (

Therefore, a list of 100 songs is 43% of all 80s number 1s -- almost half. Admitting that you love the worst of the best is no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed. With just a few exceptions (Physical, for example) I love most of these songs.

They became number 1's because they were great. They wouldn't be on this worst list if they weren't great.

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on July 12, 2010:

Justin, you are a moron. There are 52 weeks a year. 520 weeks per decade. Something tells me that 100 songs does not a whole decade make.

Justin on July 11, 2010:

That's damn near all of the #1 songs in the 1980's, there's maybe only 20 you didn't include. Dumb list and a dumb idea. I could understand 10 of them, but 100 is stupid (you're including Michael Jackson and Hall & Oates?).

Silicon on July 04, 2010:

FYC's "Good Thing" in the list of worst songs? You must be a retard. That's the point at which the men in white coats turn your machine off.

Kayla on July 04, 2010:

you're a retard. why is stevie wonder on here? michael jackson? this is a horrible list. i bet i could find way worse songs than you.

we didn't start the fire? how is that horrible lyrics? are you so musically illiterate that you don't even know what these songs mean? this list is disappointing.

Dick Trickle on June 24, 2010:

The list sucks. Go make a list about all the crappy music of the 21st century....

Lu on June 19, 2010:

Dang! I'm surprised "Rock me Amadeus" didn't make the cut on any of these lists!

dougrad on June 17, 2010:

i actually think most of these songs are pretty enjoyable to listen to, for the fact that they're fun, danceable pop songs that aren't meant to be taken seriously. they also bring back good memories of the radio and MTV while i was a little kid. it also seems like the late 80s had more disposable pop than the early 80s. all in all, i'd say the 80s had much better pop, in my opinion, than the horrid 90s.

Kelley Marks from Sacramento, California on June 14, 2010:

They certainly did lots of mindless crap in the 1980s. What, no Prince tunes on this list?!... Impossible! You do very well producing these lists, Sir Funktual. You've found your calling in life. By the way, take "Private Eyes" off the list. What have you got against pop? Later, dude!

Lisa on June 04, 2010:

I really like Heaven and Karma Chameleon

James on March 02, 2010:

This list is a hoot.

I predict 10 of these turds will be sung even more shittastically on American Idol this season.

What the?!?!?!?! on February 12, 2010:

"Can't fight this feeling"...REO Speedwagon? Huge number one song....One of the best love songs of all time...R U nuts?

Ruby J Jones on November 09, 2009:

lol:). I agree with all of this list! Though as an 80's child I listen to and rocked out to all of them. What can I say...the 80's was a time that I would really rather forget! Can we all look back at the past and say What Was I Thinking??? I know I can. Oh especially about the hair!! :)

I am sure that our kids will do the same about their music and stuff.

ps. I can't believe Thriller didn't make the list??What is up with that? Or Billie Jean? Though I used to skate to them all lol.

Old School on October 02, 2009:

Like the concept and RT'd your link on Twitter along with a link to my personal list.

I'd say once you get past your top 20, you start to get to songs that I would not agree with. I love 80s music, so most of the songs on your list I consider to be awesome. Fun topic of conversation though.

MrCheesefish on September 12, 2009:

I agree with most of them, but I like Michael Jackson - Bad a lot.

FrenchDude on August 25, 2009:

I'd say i agree about most of the list, especially Paula Abdul who I considered a hearing punishment.

But What have you done with MJ and Stevie Wonder. Ok, stevie Wonder looks like a Raelian ont the Cover, but Part-Time Lover is The Song.

And MJ. I believe Bad id above Thriller in quality, and I see 3 titles. Well, I can understand about I Just Can't Stop Loving You, which is a weak song facing Dirty Diana and Bad. But damn, Dirty Diana, even though its rank is 100, shouldn't be on the list. And why Bad #11 ? Need some explanations.

I agree on the most part though, Wham#3 is a great choice x).

Deborah-Lynn from Los Angeles, California on August 22, 2009:

You are arrogant and not very in touch with the heart of the past,

you rate number -1 in my hottest bottom list of 100 "jerk-a-droids"(the only one on the list incidently), and you rate a zero on my list of decently talented Hubbers.

Zharlock on July 29, 2009:

Dude, great l
