12 Great Rock and Roll Parodies You Just Can't Miss!

It’s only rock and roll—so why not make fun of it?

Parody has been around for thousands of years. In ancient Greece, during the time of Aristotle, writers such as Hegemon of Thasos altered the words to song or poems, hoping to change the sublime into the ridiculous. Also lovers of the spoken word, Roman poets imitated other poets for comedic effect.

As for literature, Shakespeare used metaphorical parodies in many of his plays. Perhaps one of the greatest parodies of all time is Cervantes’ Don Quixote, which parodied the romantic exploits of knight errants in early seventeenth century Spain. And the works of Lewis Carroll parodied the niceties of Victorian England.

Rock and Roll hasn’t escaped parody either. Perhaps the most prominent parody of the genre is the hard rock band Spinal Tap, as shown in their so-called mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap (1984). Also, “Weird Al” Yankovic has parodied for decades various musical artists—though he likes to get their permission before he does!

As for Lady Gaga, as outrageous as her attire and performances seem to be, she might as well be parodying herself—or at least rock and roll, you might say. If there’s a performer who invites parody more than her, who would it be?

Yeah, rock and roll is here to stay, and so are its various artists of imitation, mockery and parody. Would we have it any other way?

The following collection of videos is in no particular order. Ranking them is not the point. For instance, there are no Spinal Tap videos, because just about everybody has seen those (copyright issues could present a problem too). I hope you haven’t seen at least some of the ones I picked. At any rate, let’s just laugh and have fun! Please enjoy 12 Great Rock and Roll Parodies You Just Can't Miss:
