Dhastron’s two singles are both mood and atmosphere-filled slices of classic synthwave sound. His approach to the music is to emphasize those qualities that made synthwave take off and enjoy a resurgence. Even if some might feel it has had its heyday, I feel that there will always be a place for synthwave among those who enjoy the cinematic energy, melodic power and those unmistakable drums that go full throttle.
"Dreamaway" begins with a deep bass pulsation, the sound of a wild storm and the throb of a powerful V8 engine leaping to life. The kick drum hits along with a slowly moving synth arp and chiming tones. A bright, propulsive melody spins into the track and extends out over a beat that evokes the sound of a ribbon of asphalt rolling under the tires as rain beads on the windshield. I am enjoying the fact that Dhastron doesn’t fear embracing the Outrun sound and the feelings that it inspires. Sometimes the classics are what we want and that definitely holds true on this track
"Re-Born" is a track that has all the energy of an ‘80s movie training montage. I can imagine images of an underdog athlete training his heart out to succeed against the odds with this track. The melody provides a whole lot of motivation and uplift as bass oscillations, wave-like synth patterns and percussive throbs move underneath. This is a piece of music that has a lot of movement and power to it. I like the way that we get a soloing synth before it stacks up notes into soaring conclusion and begins to wind down on open and warm synth chords.
Both of Dhastron’s singles create strong imagery and emphasize the melodic, driving elements of synthwave that first turned me onto the genre. I think that if he can continue to paint strong pictures and write good melodies, he’ll have a formula for some positive future developments.
