Recap: Relationship Status (Mike & Eleven, Nancy & Jonathan, Joyce & Hopper)

Mike & Eleven can't keep themselves off each other and this has been bugging Hopper, so he wants to separate them. Joyce, on the other hand, doesn't think it's a good idea to do that, so she gives him advice on how to give them a heartwarming talk without turning them against him for being too strict. This doesn't go as planned because Hopper couldn't follow the letter that he memorized, so instead, he threatens Mike to abide by his rules. Mike had to lie to Eleven about not being able to hang out with her for a while because of his dying grandmother, but Eleven finds out about his lie and ends up breaking up with him.

Nancy and Jonathan encounter a serious fight after being fired from Hawkins Post for pretending to be reporters and investigating on a rat issue that their boss didn't give a green light on. They briefly grow apart, but end up getting back together after an apology. They also continue to investigate on the mysterious case of the rats.

Joyce and Hopper are always bickering due to difference of opinion on some subject and situation. It all started when Hopper got mad for getting stood up by Joyce. Joyce didn’t show up on their supposedly friendly date because she had to go to her kid’s science teacher to ask why her magnets fell from the refrigerator. Hopper seems to have a thing for Joyce and only Murray has figured this out. Murray openly tells both of them to just get together because they are clearly attracted to each other.

Recap: New Characters (Robin, Suzie, & Alexei)

Though there are many new characters in the story, Robin, Suzie, and the Russian scientist are the most notable new characters in the story. Robin is Steve's colleague at Scoops Ahoy, an ice-cream parlor located in the food court of Starcourt Mall. Dustin is shipping Robin and Steve, but it turns out that Robin is into girls.

Suzie is Dustin's new girlfriend who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. They met each other at Camp Know Where though their first meeting wasn't shown in the series. Dustin's friends think that she's not real, but she eventually shows herself in the series when Dustin needed help in finding out Planck's constant, a crucial information needed to save the world.

Hopper and Joyce hold a Russian scientist named Alexei hostage and forces him to reveal what the Russians are up to. It turns out that they are attempting to access the Upside Down by opening the portal again, which is situated beneath Starcourt. Though Alexei eventually cooperates with Joyce, Hopper, and Murray and even becomes closer to them, knowing that he can't go back to his Russian troupes anymore, he dies of a gunshot by the big and awfully strong guy that has been tailing them.

Recap: The Mind Flayer

Once again, the Mind Flayer is back and has infiltrated Billy, Sam's stepbrother, along with other victims. But the Hawkins residents who have been aware of the uncanny incidents in their town continue to find ways to fight the Mind Flayer and close the gate. This time, there are two additions to the group: Robin and Erica, Lucas' younger sister.

Recap: Group Division

Just like in the first and second season, there are always groups who are taking on separate tasks and would end up all together at the latter part of the story. On this season, the groups are divided into: Joyce, Hopper, and Murray; Nancy and Jonathan; Mike, Will, Eleven, Max, and Lucas; and Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica. Towards the end, they all join forces together to close the gate once again.

Recap: Ending

Hopper sacrifices himself to close the gate to the Upside Down and becomes a Hawkins hero. Three months later, the deaths are once again covered up. Joyce and his sons, Jonathan and Will, along with Eleven who is now powerless, move out of Hawkins. Mike encourages her that her powers will eventually come back, Eleven professes her love for Mike, and they make plans to meet on Thanksgiving.
