Strange Celebrity Phobias: Ellen Page’s Tennis Ball Fear And Other Stars Afraid Of Fun Things

Treva is a pop culture fan who has been writing about the entertainment world for over a decade.

I recently learned that actress Ellen Page and her wife Emma Portner have adopted a new pet dog named Mo, and I feel just a bit sorry for the pooch. While I’m sure that the very lucky dog will never want for anything and will love life with his two moms, he’ll likely never know the joy of seeing the look of disgust on their faces when he drops a drool-drenched tennis ball down at their feet during a game of fetch. This is because Ellen Page is deathly afraid of tennis balls.

While talking about her role on X-Men: Days of Future Past, the actress said that she had to act alongside tennis ball stand-ins for the giant sentinels in many of the movie’s CGI scenes. She revealed that this was difficult for her because she has a “phobia of tennis balls” that is so intense that she can’t even be in the room when tennis comes on TV. In other words, it’s pretty safe to say that she doesn’t care a whit about what’s been going on at Wimbledon.

Ellen hasn’t elaborated on her fear of the fuzzy yellow spheres that many people and pooches use as a source of entertainment, but she’s not the only star who is afraid of something that most people would consider fun. Here's a look at a few other celebrities with strange phobias:

Why Oprah Winfrey Can’t Party Like It’s Her Birthday

In the October 2013 issue of O Magazine, Oprah Winfrey made a surprising confession: She's afraid of balloons.

We're not talking about the hot air balloons that take riders up to scary heights. Instead, the talk show host is terrified of their smaller cousins, the colorful party balloons that are used to celebrate special occasions.

Oprah thinks that her fear has something to do with gunfire since balloons make similar loud noises when they're popped. According to People, her phobia is so bad that she described her 40th birthday as an "anxiety-filled day" because her staff decided to surprise her on her talk show by filling the audience with balloons.

"I walk downstairs, it's a surprise and there are balloons everywhere and everybody is so excited and all I can think is 'This is a room full of balloons!'" she recalled.

This being Oprah, she decided to turn the terrifying experience into a valuable life lesson.

"No way around it, just had to walk through them," she said. "That became a metaphor for facing all of my fears: 'No way around it, just walk right through it.'"

Balloons aren't Oprah's only phobia. She once confessed to being afraid of chewing gum because her grandmother used to keep used wads of it in her cabinet. She must really hate it when people pop bubblegum bubbles.

Oprah may love surprises, but it sounds like she's not a fan of balloon drops.

Why Johnny Depp Likely Didn’t Watch the ‘It’ Remake

Johnny Depp has donned a lot of white face makeup and guyliner in his movies, but don't expect to ever see a round red nose in the middle of his pale mug. According to The Guardian, the actor once said of his clown phobia, "There always seemed to be a darkness lurking just under the surface, a potential for real evil. I guess I am afraid of them because it's impossible -- thanks to their painted-on smiles -- to distinguish if they are happy or if they're about to bite your face off.''

It sounds like the Edward Scissorhands star has spent too much time in Tim Burton's twisted worlds.

Why Kristen Stewart Probably Won’t Ever Star In A Disney Movie

It seems highly unlikely that Kristen Stewart ever enjoyed the theme park ride that inspired Johnny Depp's beloved Pirates of the Caribbean character, Jack Sparrow. Disneyland is supposed to be the happiest place on Earth, but the Twilight actress used to be terrified of visiting the magical theme park.

"I was always afraid of Disneyland," Kristen told MTV in 2009. "Because there was an urban legend that they used to steal the kids and shave their heads. They'd take them out of the parks, and then the park would shut down [in an emergency] to try to find the bald child. I never wanted to be that child!" Luckily, the Snow White and the Huntsman star says that working on the amusement park-themed movie Adventureland helped her to conquer her fear.

Why Kendra Wilkinson Probably Tried to Talk Hugh Hefner Out Of Having Pizza Parties at the Playboy Mansion

According to OK! Magazine, reality show star Kendra Wilkinson can't stand a fun party food that many Americans love. The former stripper and Playboy model said that her feelings about pizza changed after working at Papa John's.

"It's like a phobia now because the smell that was on my hands," Kendra revealed. "I get really grossed out when I think of that pizza because I had to work with the pizza."

Kendra Wilkinson doesn't care if the ingredients and pizza are better; she's not eating Papa John's.

Why Natalie Portman Never Would Have Voiced Smurfette in the ‘Smurfs’ Movie

It looks like Katy Perry didn't have to compete with Natalie Portman for the role of Smurfette in the live-action Smurfs movie. During an interview with Interview Magazine, Natalie fessed up to having a Smurfy fear that actor Hank Azaria might be able to help the Star Wars actress with.

"I remember as a kid being really scared of the Smurfs," she said. "Because that bad guy, Gargamel, was so terrifying. I was scared of a lot of cartoons. I'm kind of wussy like that."

Hopefully Natalie's kids, Aleph and Amalia, aren't a fan of the little blue beings with a limited vocabulary.

Natalie Portman is not a fan of blue, at least when it's on the skin of Gargamel's favorite treat.

Why Tyra Banks Visited Sea World Before It Became Universally Problematic

Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Tyra Banks has gotten wet for a few photo shoots throughout her long and successful modeling career. However, the America's Next Top Model host doesn't think that it's better down where it's wetter, thanks to Flipper's slippery friends.

Tyra has admitted to suffering from a fear of dolphins since she was a young child, telling radio host Howard Stern that she used to have nightmares about the smiling sea creatures bumping into her legs. On an episode of her talk show, she tried to conquer her dolphin phobia by heading to SeaWorld and getting in a pool with the friendly critters. However, she revealed that the experience didn't make the fear go away.

"The fear is not over," she said of her dolphin encounter. "I've gotten a little past it, but there is something that still lives inside me."
