When a show attracts many groups of people, most of the time additional seasons were ordered to be made. For a show like Spongebob Squarepants, gaining new seasons due to popularity seemed like something it could do quite easily. Some would say annoyingly so. But while the addition of new seasons could be a sign of this show's quality, or that Nickelodeon really does not want to attempt to get a new cash cow franchise, it was important to remember the episodes that helped make Spongebob Squarepants popular in the first place. One good place to start is the actual first season. As the first season, the episodes here helped introduce viewers to the titular Spongebob Squarepants and his home of Bikini Bottom. One good episode that introduced elements to Spongebob Squarepants was the first episode which had the mini-episode Help Wanted. Another neat episode was the third episode Plankton!, which introduced a legitimate antagonist to the Spongebob Squarepants world. And in regards to introducing new characters to other characters in a new environment, the ninth episode Nature Pants introduced certain aspects about the wildlife of Bikini Bottom, via Spongebob. Spongebob Squarepants had its start in 1999, and as a result, it has so far produced up to nine seasons worth of content. Which was pretty neat.
as the first episode of Spongebob Squarepants, the episode Help Wanted essentially established or began establishing certain aspects about Spongebob Squarepants as a series. The established aspects were that Spongebob was an anthropomorphic sponge who lived under the sea inside a pineapple, he lived in a town called Bikini Bottom, Spongebob had a pet snail named Gary who sounded like a cat, and he was friends with a starfish named Patrick. One of the things that this episode was trying to establish was Spongebob's job, the Krusty Krab. While Spongebob seemed like he was sure to get a job, the employees, the characters Squidward and Mr. Krabs, were not excited at the thought of Spongebob being an employee. So as a way to get Spongebob to leave them alone, Mr. Krabs had Spongebob try to find a spatula that was seemingly impossible to find. Unfortunately for Squidward and Mr. Krabs, the introduction of the the anchovies occurred once Spongebob left. Anchovies in this show was characterized in this episode as voracious eaters who functioned as a hive mind to get whatever they wanted. Fortunately Spongebob managed to return with the spatula he was asked to retrieve, managed to feed all of the anchovies, and made it so that nobody got hurt after this little debacle. And he even managed to gain employment.
In most of the shows made by Nickelodeon there were heroes and villains. In Spongebob Squarepants the main hero was, of course, Spongebob Squarepants, but it was not until the third episode that the main villain of this series was introduced. In the episode Plankton!, the viewer was introduced to the primary, also named Plankton. See, in Spongebob's job as the fry cook at the Krusty Krabb his responsibility was to cook the main attraction, the Krabby Patty. The Krabby Patty was a burger that was covered in some kind of formula that made it ridiculously popular to consumers, which gave the Krusty Krabb a lot of money. Of course, as the antagonist of Spongebob Squarepants, Plankton wanted the secret formula so that his restaurant, the Chum Bucket, could have some of the popularity that the Krusty Krabb had. And since Spongebob was relatively new to this conflict, Plankton decided to get the formula through Spongebob. First in a friendly manner where Plankton attempted to befriend Spongebob, which failed because Spongebob was actually smarter than most people gave him credit for. So Plankton decided to hijack Spongebob's brain and control his body to get a Krabby Patty himself. That also failed, but only because Spongebob was able to foil Plankton's plan by describing how delicious a Krabby Patty was.
One interesting episode that aired in the first season of Spongebob Squarepants was the episode Nature Pants. In the world of Spongebob Squarepants, the equivalent of hunting was the activity of jellyfishing. It was not harmful to the jellyfish, but the hunters could receive a nasty shock. Spongebob, naturally, participated in this sport despite the pain one could receive. In Nature Pants however, Spongebob decided that maybe living in the civilized world was slightly overrated. So after an incident at the Krusty Krabb where the kitchen caught of fire and nearly destroyed the whole building, Spongebob decided to live the life of a jellyfish. Which meant giving away most of his worldly possessions. Of course, Spongebob's friends, mostly Patrick, took the news pretty badly. But Spongebob made up his mind. So after taking off his pants, Spongebob began is life living among the jellyfish. Of course, Spongebob's first day as a jellyfish was met with some problems. Eating seaweed instead of food from Bikini Bottom, not being immune to jellyfish stings when making friends with the jellyfish, and having a friend who really disliked his change of lifestyle made Spongebob's move to the wild somewhat difficult. Especially since Patrick soon tried to hunt Spongebob out of sheer despair and sadness.
Coincidentally, the moment Patrick decided to hunt Spongebob was when Spongebob was able to move somewhat like a jellyfish. After saying that if Spongebob would not return home then Patrick will just have to make Spongebob his next trophy. Pretty soon an intense chase scene ensued. Fortunately, Spongebob was able to evade Patrick. Naturally by the end of this episode Spongebob came to the painful realization that maybe being a jellyfish was not all that great, so he decided to return back home.
Spongebob Squarepants was a show that has been on the air for a very long time. Too long for some people. But after looking through the first season, it makes sense why this show lasted as long as it did. All of the episodes were pretty funny. The setting was unique, it was interesting to see animated sea creatures behave as uniquely as this show portrayed them, and all of the characters had lines that were hilarious if one were to think about what was said during a scene. Even the villain, Plankton, was entertaining and funny at the same time because his goal seemed fairly minor compared to other villains. Plus, it was interesting how Nickelodeon allowed a naked character to be shown.
