Songs of the Week That Have Thursday in Them
I'm continuing my hub series where I write a hub each day about songs that use one of the days of the week in their title. This hub is on songs that have "Thursday" in their titles. Two tragic deaths of talented singer/songwriters highlight this hub's Thursday offerings. I'm only taking on five songs per hub so I might have missed yours. If I have, please let me know what your favorite "Thursday song" is in the comments section.
If you would be so kind to vote in the poll as well... it would be much appreciated!
Jersey Thursday - Donovan
Album:
Fairy Tale
Artist:
Donovan
Composer:
Donovan Leitch
Release Date:
October 22, 1965
Highest Rating:
none
Fairy Tale is the second album released by Donovan Leitch, normally known as just Donovan. Donovan sang Bob Dylon-like folk songs during the 60's and the two shared a sort of over blown rivalry. Donovan was both a musical performer as well as a tv personality. He became popular after several appearances on the British television show Ready, Steady, Go! He had associations with Joan Baez and Bruce Springsteen as well as The Beatles. Admittedly, Jersey Thursday wasn't released as a single from the Fairy Tale album nor is a song he is well known for... but it does have "Thursday" in it. Hopefully, you like it. As was the style of the time it runs just over two minutes.
Lyrics:
In a tiny piece of colored glass
My love was born
And reds and golds and yellows
Were the colors in the dawn
Night brought on its purple cloak
Of velvet to the sky
And the girls were wheeling, spinning
On jersey Thursday
In a tiny piece of colored glass
My love was born
And reds and golds and yellows
Were the colors in the dawn
Night brought on its purple cloak
Of velvet to the sky
And the girls were wheeling, spinning
On jersey Thursday

Lyrics:
Well, it started out just like a dream
And like a dream
I knew that what we had
Would have to end
I was lookin' for a lifetime lover
And you were lookin' for a friend
Someone to be there after all your nighttime lovers
Had gone the way they came
Someone who knew the way
To help you play your daytime game
It's not the same
Well, I started out pretending
That I've come to mean enough to you
To make you want to change
Then I came to realize
That there was just too much of you you have to rearrange
And I couldn't bear to wait around
For all your nighttime lovers
To go the way they came
Then it came to hurt too much for me
To have to play your daytime game
No one's to blame
It started out just like a dream
And like a dream
I knew that what we had
Would have to end
'Cause I was lookin' for a lifetime lover
And you were lookin' for a friend
I was lookin' for a lifetime lover
And you were lookin' for a friend
Thursday's Child - David Bowie
Album:
'hours...'
Artist:
David Bowie
Composer:
David Bowie
Reeves Gabrels
Release Date:
September 20, 1999
Highest Rating:
#16 (US)
David Bowie wrote the song "Thursday's Child" for a video game called "Omikron - The Nomad Soul". Bowie says the song was inspired by the book "Thursday's Child" which was an autobiography of the actress Eartha Kitt. The video shows a worn looking David Bowie undressing in front of a bathroom mirror along with a woman. The two morph into younger versions of themselves.
Lyrics:
All of my life I've tried so hard
Doing my best with what I had
Nothing much happened all the same
Something about me stood apart
A whisper of hope that seemed to fail
Maybe I'm born right out of my time
Breaking my life in two
[CHORUS]
Throw me tomorrow
Now that I've really got a chance
Throw me tomorrow
Everything's falling into place
Throw me tomorrow
Seeing my past to let it go
Throw me tomorrow
Only for you I don't regret
That I was Thursday's child
Monday Tuesday Wednesday born I was
Monday Tuesday Wednesday born I was
Thursday's child
Sometimes I cried my heart to sleep
Shuffling days and lonesome nights
Sometimes my courage fell to my feet
Lucky old sun is in my sky
Nothing prepared me for your smile
Lighting the darkness of my soul
Innocence in your arms
Sweet Thursday - Matt Costa
Album:
Songs We Sing
Artist:
Matt Costa
Composer:
Paul Simon
Release Date:
March 28, 2006
Highest Rating:
none
Matt Costa from Huntington Beach, California was primarily an independent singer and songwriter making his first musical appearance in 2003. Thanks to help from No Doubt's Tom Dumont and Modest Mouse/The Shins' Phil Ek, Costa put together his "Songs We Sing" album. He had previously released it independently in 2005 but the album was re-worked with the help of Ek and Dumont and re-released in 2006, including the addition of the song "Sweet Thursday". Costa also has close ties to Jack Johnson and opened for him during Johnson's 2005 summer tour. His single, "Sweet Thursday" draws from his west coast roots, which you can hear in the lyric "Sweet Thursday is calling me back up to Monterey".
Lyrics:
I'm waiting in the pines
I'm waiting in the forest
Pilon at my side
The treasure lies before us
And so we started walking
We knew they couldn't harm us
And how the wind is crying
When misty morning dawn breaks
We'll walk back to the flats
With gallons in our hands
We're walking in the fields
We're working on the farms
We do just like our fathers
How can they take that from us?
And so we started driving
We had no choice to leave this
The bowl was left behind us
For Hooverville's before us
Three hundred thousand
Bodies who can't rest
Sweet Thursday is calling me back up to Monterey
Up to Monterey
So I started driving
And left my home behind me
The row there kept reminding
Of pages in your writing
Sweet Thursday is calling me back up to Monterey
Up to Monterey
Thursday - Morphine
Album:
Cure for Pain
Artist:
Morphine
Composer:
Mark Sandman
Release Date:
September 1993
Highest Rating:
none
Morphine was an alternative rock band formed in 1989 by frontman/songwriter Mark Sandman. The band enjoyed critical acclaim although not commercial success, at least not in the United States. The band disbanded in 1999 when lead singer Mark Sandman died of a heart attack during a live performance. Sandman's vocals are distinctive and described as a "low crooning". He was also their bassist and known for his odd two string bass guitar which he played with a slide. A very influential east coast band, hailing from Cambridge Mass., Morphine enjoyed much more commercial success outside of America in countries like Australia, Portugal, France and Belgium - than within its own borders.
Lyrics:
We used to meet every Thursday Thursday
Thursday in the afternoon
For a couple of beers and a game of pool
We used to go to a motel a motel
A motel across the street
And the name of the motel was the Wagon Wheel
Oh
One day she said come on come on she said
Why don't you come back to my house
She said my husband's out of town
You know he's gone till the end of the month
Well I was just so nervous so nervous
You know I couldn't really quite relax
Cause I was never really quite sure when her
Husband was coming back
Sure one of the neighbors yea one of the neighbors
One of the neighbors that saw my car
And they told her yea they told her
I think they know who you are
Well her husband he's a violent man a very violent and jealous man
Now I have to leave this town I got to leave while I still can
We should have kept it every Thursday Thursday
Thursday in the afternoon
For a couple of beers and a game of pool
We should have kept it every Thursday Thursday
Thursday in the afternoon
For a couple of beers and a game of pool
She was pretty good too

Not familiar with those Thursday songs. Sounds like an idea for a hub of your own. Thanks for going through my hubs though! This is the most comments I've had in one day since I've joined hub pages. It is an honor to me that you took the time to read and comment like this. Thank-you.

Good Job on Thursday. David Russell
J Beadle (author) from Wisconsin on August 19, 2010:
I don't believe so but they make the hubs much more interesting when there is feedback. It *might* increase the hubscore. The hubscore is a complete mystery to me though.
