25 Songs To Make 'Em Swoon

We all have different music tastes. My boyfriend loves all things metal, my sister loves oldies/rock, my mom loves club hits 'n rap, then there's my dad who loves the classics and oldies... and me? I love it all. From System of a Down to Nsync to The Zombies to Alkaline Trio to Baby Bash to The Cure... I seem to have a quintessentially (hm, is that a word?) eclectic music taste. I've met people few and far between who shared such a vast taste in music, and I could speak for hours when I do meet up with someone who shares a big collection of interest.

I once spent an entire party discussing Phil Collins and the Genesis period with another girl who loved Phil as much as I! And we were both 23. It's awfully easy to run into people who strictly listen to the radio or Lady Gaga.

I think if I had a superpower, it would have to do with music. Or eating. Or... spotting dog breeds.

But I digress... while we all have diverse tastes in music (which is totally fine!), there are some songs that translate to all of us. While I don't understand most of the metal my boyfriend listens to, I will admit to finding that some songs bode just fine with me.

These sort of songs are in every genre. I'm not sure if it's something in the song, the singer, or just an extremely talented band at work -- these special songs can make even the most metal, or punk-rocker, or grunge-virtuoso listen...

and appreciate...

and... swoon?

Yes, songs to make 'em swoon. Even if they are the most fickle of listeners.

(I would embed the videos but the html thingy isn't being nice to me, plus the videos would take up sooo much room!)

1. Elvis - Can't Help Falling In Love With You
Wise men say, only fools rush in. But I can't help falling in love with you.

Oh Elvis, I can't help falling in love with YOU! Of course you're on this list. This song is so beautiful, so melodic, so timeless, and you my good sir, are quite the icon. I grew up on oldies, and it was a lovely childhood. If I were to have children one day, I'd probably make them grow up listening to music from this era before they were allowed to listen to anything else. Music back then was so simple, elegant, and really powerful as this song so clearly proves in every note and verse.

2. Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
And then she asks me, do I look alright? And I say yes, you look wonderful tonight.

You can't put a price on Eric Clapton or this beautiful song. It is beyond wonderful. Whenever I hear this song, wherever I might be (mall bathroom, the car, grocery store) it's like you're listening to it for the first time every time. It's just intoxicating. The guitar, the way he sings with such purity and love... I can only hope whomever I marry will love me like this. Will look at me at every second of the day and think to himself 'she looks and is wonderful.'

3. Foo Fighters - Everlong
Hello, I've waited for you... everlong.

Acoustic or electric, either way this song packs a sentimental punch. Quite frankly, I don't any girl or boy who *doesn't* like this song, let alone swoon at the mere play of it. Dave Grohl's voice is perfect, the guitar, the drums, all perfect. This song is perfection. Breathe out, so I can breath you in. Hold you in. ...Whoa, sorry I think I just fainted.

4. Andrew W.K. - She Is Beautiful
I never knew girls existed like you, but now that I do I'd really like to get to know you!

Awwwhhhh, how many guys can own up to that? Plenty more dudes would rather get into your pants vs like to get to know you. So what if Andrew W.K. is a bit on the dirty side... or his hair looks a smidge greasy.. or if he likes to drink milkshakes via throwing the contents of the blender at his face. He is the BEST and this song is a hidden gem. Not many people know the genius of Andrew W.K. All I can say is, if Andrew W.K. were my best friend, I'd never have a dull moment - ever! You make me swoon, Andrew W.K!

5. The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby
But she looks in my eyes, and makes me realize and she says 'Don't worry baby'

The Beach Boys are the ultimate classic to me. They are often overlooked because of their whole "party beach" focus, but they really had some great stuff. God Only Knows is another fantastic beautiful song- they often get compared to The Beatles, who let's face it, pretty much owned the 60's but to me it's a simple apples and oranges equation. Both brilliant artists with totally different appeals, and this song is my absolute fave Beach Boys song. It's so romantic, even in it's simplicity. The only gripe I have with this song is it seems so short, and before I know it, I'm hitting play again.

6. Blue October - 18th Floor Balcony
Here we are, on this 18th floor balcony, we're both... flying away.

Holy crap, this song is chock full of painful memories for me. I don't know any female who doesn't immediately sigh at this song. To be brutally honest, I envisioned this song as the wedding song to my last relationship. To be played at the first dance, and once the violins kick in, the whole party jumps in to accompany. Unfortunately, fantasies die. The one I was with when this song was always on my mind, well, we perished. My supposed best friend got between us, and the guy believed every single exaggeration and lie she could come up with. Some friend, huh? Regardless, I love this song, despite the haunted feelings it leaves with me. And I think it's a perfect way to say 'I love you' to that someone special.

7. Brian Mcknight - Back At One
One, you're like a dream come true. Two, just wanna be with you.

OH EM GEEE!!! So what if it's a teensy weensy bit cheesey. Who doesn't love cheese?! This song came out when I was in middle school and it had the same effect on me then that it has on me now. Brian Mcknight's voice is beautiful, I could listen to him sing all day. I'm surprised he wasn't more popular - he clearly had talent, but it's funny how the talented ones fade into the shadows. I supposed to make way for the "non-talented-hot-enough-bimbo" talent. I think we all should listen to this song, and think about our loved one. Or better yet, send this to your loved one! It will surely make them smile.

8. Bruce Springsteen - Secret Garden
Shell let you in her heart if you got a hammer and a vise but into her secret garden, don't think twice.

Jerry Maguire aside, this song has balls. And when I say that, I mean, I've never heard a song that so eloquently speaks the truth about females. Bruce Springsteen really knows his stuff. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING about this song- Bruce's voice, the bit of saxophone in the back, the fluttering piano... screams... I can't even think of the proper word for it. But oh, it's screamed. It's indescribable. If you can get Tom Cruise and Renee what's-her-face out of your head.

9. Counting Crows - Colorblind
Pull me out from inside. I am ready, I am ready, I am ready, I am fine.

So this one is better known from 'Cruel Intentions' but c'mon, this song is just wow. Just wow. And okay, that certain scene is definitely hot, who hasn't imagined doing all that to Ryan Philippe from that movie? What, you haven't?? *cough.. ahem...* Forget Cruel Intentions, the Counting Crows are marvelous, genius, I'd bow down to them if I could! I loved this song so much, I had to learn it on piano. Close your eyes, listen to the lyrics. Get lost in the piano. Are you ready? Are you ready? You are fine.

10. Dashboard Confessional - Hands Down
My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me, so won't you kill me, so I die happy?

This one's a RUSH. And when I first heard Hand Down, I couldn't quite believe it was the same band who came out with "The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most", which is technically my favorite album of Dashboard Confessional (I dare you to listen to Saints and Sailors without singing along). This song has such a secretive passion, if you *don't* like this song, I might wonder if you had a soul! Just kidding. Girls love it when you're so blatant about the whole romance scene. And guys like it too, what with the whole 'get some' line.

11. David Bowie - As The World Falls Down
But I'll be there for you-ou-ouuu. As the world falls dowwwwnnnn.

Omg. Omg. Omg. Omg. Not only is Labyrinth one of my all-time favorite movies, it features the godly David Bowie. This song... omg omg omg omg omg omg omg. *please don't judge my girlyness* I don't care if he obviously stuffed his leggings. I don't care that his hair looks like a transvestite's terrible wig. I don't care that his eyebrows and makeup are probably also borrowed from said transvestite's makeup drawer. IT MAKES ME SWOOOOOOOOOOOON!!! The scene this song is from, oh good gravy. I've always wanted to attend a masquerade ball. Especially one with Bowie lurking around.

12. Edwin McCain - I Could Not Ask For More
And these are the moments, I thank God that I'm alive.

Alright it was bound to happen sooner or later... tapping into the total girlishness within. I can't help it. This song is just so damn romantic. So Edwin Mccain is my guilty pleasure... is that so bad?! I mean, this song, oof. Another one I can't describe. I'm a writer and I can't for the life of me describe some songs... but maybe some songs don't want to be defined. And I think this is one of them.

13. Elton John - Can You Feel The Love Tonight?
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds believe the very best.

Well, this one was an obvious choice. Sir Elton John is a force to be reckoned with, and this song is no different. I remember when The Lion King came out and I got the soundtrack on cassette tape... I would listen to the whole thing as I went to bed. Instrumentals, and popular songs from the movie like this one. Can't you feel the love in this song? I mean, it's enough to make kings and vagabonds believe the very best. And being such a huge vagabond myself, I can attest to the truth in this song.

14. Ginuwine - Differences
You blind me with your love, with you I have no sight. I'm so in love, so deep in love.

I'll admit, I'm not the biggest rap/r&b fan, but I do love love love some of the stuff out there. I'm more of a fan of the eclectic (I'd peg Outkast in that category for sure), but Ginuwine, God you really hit the nail on the head with this one. Every time I hear this song, my heart skips a beat, and I sing (terribly off key, mind you) and dance (like a crazy person) to every line. And this definitely beats out that other song of yours, Mr. Ginuwine. You know, the one about wanting to ride a pony because of how you're.. er, well, you know. You've redeemed yourself, Ginuwine. Unless this song came before the Pony Song.. okay, fine I'll stop lying. I love the Pony song too. Go ahead, shun me!

15. Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be, and I don't want to go home right now.

Siiiiiiiiiiiiigh. Acoustic guitar and violins, it's pretty hard to resist that, isn't it? Maybe this song did get overplayed, but when a song really twangs the nerve, for me, it never gets old. To this day I could listen to this song and not immediately correlate it with that City of Angels movie (which frankly, I found quite boring). And I'm pretty sure that's a good thing, because this song is so great, it can stand on it's own just fine. Fun and Weird fact: in preparation for the role of the angel, Nicolas Cage practiced not blinking. Oh Nicolas Cage, what won't you do for a role?

16. Journey - Faithfully
I'm forever yours, faithfully.

JOURNEY!!!!!!!!!!! To me one of the most pivotal bands EVER. That mega-power voice, the guitars, the power drums, the 80's hair... I think any Journey song could make anyone swoon (my definite favorite is Don't Stop Believin' - I know, I'm so original), but I chose this one for the romantic lyric content. In the end when he sings all the "oh ohhh ohhh's" I'm like yyyeah, yyyeeeahh, YEEEAHHHH! Ahem... don't believe me? Listen to it and try not swooning. Go ahead, I dare ya!

17. Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time.

Oh. My. Word. Righteous Brothers, I don't know what you were doing when you wrote this, or what inspired you to write such a captivating song, but you not only nailed it, you made it virtually impossible for anone to ever top this song in the romantic category. You certainly weren't boasting when you decided to call yourself 'Righteous.' Even if that oh-so-smoldery-sexy scene from Ghost didn't exist, this song still would, and you better believe this song would heave the same impact. Lonely rivers sigh wait for me, wait for me. I'll be coming home, wait for me. Ohhhhhhhhhmylooove my darliiiing. ...I'll wait however long, Righteous Brothers. It doesn't get anymore romantic than this. This is the real deal. And by God, have you ever seen a live version of this? *double triple quadruple swoon* (that sounds like an ice cream flavor, don'tchathink?)

18. Phil Collins - A Groovy Kind Of Love
When you're close to me, I can feel your heart beat I can hear you breathing in my ear...

Phil Collins. Please marry me. No, really. It was awfully hard to pick one Phil Collins/Genesis song, because they are so many friggin' awesome ones. But I decided on this oldies cover because, well, I'm an oldies fiend and this one really does tickle my heartstrings! It was a toss up between this one, Can't Stop Loving You, or One More Night for songs that make me swoon.. and this one made me the swooniest. But frankly, I'm beginning to think it's Phil's voice that's the cause... he could sing the abc's and I'd be in swoonsville.

24. The Zombies - Time Of The Season
What's your name? Who's your daddy? Is he rich like me?

Ohmygod. This has got to be the sexiest song in all of existence. This song makes me swoon within the first second - because by then, we all know by the guitar and the exhaling-of-breath intro, that it's Time of the Season by The Zombies. His voice too... don't get me started on THAT. And the sheer arrogance of my favorite line, "What's your name? Who's your daddy? Is he rich like me?" ...why do us girls find arrogance so irresistible? And the line, "Tell it to me slowly" makes me SQUIRM. I guarantee if you play this to someone you like, or love, or even have it going in the background of a date, it'll kindle the sexeh-time-flame. You're welcome.

25. Alkaline Trio - Clavicle
I wanna wake up naked next to you, kissing the curve of your clavicle.

Well I HAD to put up a song from my all-time favorite band. I bet you're thinking, "Christinepurr, what the hell is this?!" But I assure you it's a totally sexy romantic song! About a guy wanting to wake up naked next to you kissing your collarbone! I mean, hello? Is that not irresistably romantic? The balls to even be so bold and blatant... sorry, it just gets my fires going! The more brutally honest about what a guy plans to do with me, the hotter and more romantic it is. You can't be mushy-gushy all the time! ;)

...Well, I really could've went on and on, and I sort of did... I did cut a lot of songs out because I figured this was long enough as it is. I could've probably went to the hundreds mark! Alas, I'm telling ya, these songs are a plethora of swoons and good times to come. Burn yourself a cd with most of these songs, and you'll have it made in the shade, my friend. Don't limit yourself to just these - there are so many wonderfully swoony songs out there. You just gotta look.

And if not, send that burnt cd my way! I'll cherish it forever!

First off, love Phil Collins!! Second, you should also check out the Black Keys' "You're the One." It was my wedding song and one of my favorite "swoon-worthy" tracks! Great list!

christinepurr (author) on January 12, 2012:

Thank you for taking time to read it! Much appreciated. :) I am definitely in love with Phil Collins as well, anytime I hear his voice I'm like... oh Phil, swoooooooooooon!

neutronrevival from United States on January 12, 2012:

I LOVE Phil and I honestly thought I was the only one who thought that One More Night was swoon-worthy. The music video is absolutely beautiful for that song as it is for A Groovy Kind of Love and so many of his other wonderful songs.

One More Night is my top swoon-worthy song, but A Groovy Kind of Love is #2 or #3 on my list because it's also very romantic. I'm a Phil fangirl and very much in love with him.

Awesome article. Thank you for writing it. :)

Alecia Murphy, thanks for the comment and stopping by. :) Phil Collins is a golden god! Hehe, I strive to be as diverse as possible in many things, and with music it just comes natural I suppose!

HumanPerception, GASPPP!!! You are literally the first person I've come upon that doesn't like Everlong! That's okay, I don't knock differences, I think they're to be celebrated. :) As corny as that sounds. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

HumanPerception from Ireland on November 13, 2011:

I guess I'm the first person you've come across that hates everlong xD Love the fact that you mentioned Phil Collins and Genesis though, a proper band, unlike Foo Fighters. But hey like you said yourself, we all have different opinions, and that's just mine. :)

Alecia Murphy from Wilmington, North Carolina on November 13, 2011:

I love the diversity of this list. I can relate to your story very much. Phil Collins and Genesis as well, I love their music very much. I'm very interested in reading future lists!
