Smule – Sing Your Hearts Out

Rick loves writing fantasy novels, and has an unending passion for football, cricket and music.

Are you someone who is really passionate about music? Do you enjoy singing with karaoke? If yes, then you’ve come to the right place.

This article looks at ‘Sing!’, the singing app developed by Smule that is wildly popular among music lovers today. Even though there are several other apps developed by Smule like ‘Magic Piano. ‘Guitar!’ and ‘AutoRap’, Sing! is by far their biggest hit. So, for the rest of this article, I’ll be using the word 'Smule' itself to refer to the app, as that is how most of the users fondly address it.

What is Smule?

Founded in 2008 by Jeff Smith, Smule lets its users create music by singing along with karaoke tracks that are already present in the app’s music library. There are thousands of songs to choose from, and that too in all major languages. Whether you are from the US, Australia, India, Indonesia or anywhere else in the world for that matter, you will definitely find your favorite songs here.

And who updates the app’s library with these karaoke tracks? Well, that is the best part. It is the users themselves who get to do this. So, if there is a song you’d really love to sing but can’t find its karaoke on the app, all you’ve got to do is upload the track yourself, which is quite a straightforward process, and can be done by going to the app’s desktop site.

What Makes It Special?

One of the coolest features of this app is that it allows you to sing duets or even group songs with other users located anywhere else in the world. This can be done by joining a song opened as an invite by another user, or creating an invite yourself to which other singers can join. The invite thus created will be open for 7 days after which it expires. During this 7-day period, any number of users can join this invite. And each of these joins would come out as a separate recording. For example, if 100 users join an invite within the 7-day period, then that would create 100 new recordings for the person who opened the invite, even though he / she only had to sing once. The recordings thus created are referred to as 'collabs'.

Group songs work in a similar fashion, but there would only be one recording in this case, and all joins would be combined to form one big song! This is an excellent way for friends located in different parts of the world to sing together. If users really coordinate well and decide in advance who sings each portion of the song, then it would be super fun creating a group song. To achieve this, the person opening the group song needs to ensure that the invite is private (so that only the people he / she shares it with would be able to join). Once the song is complete, you can make it public for the rest of the Smule community to listen to.

And for those of you who are interested in showing yourself to the world, there is an option to do Video recordings as well! The steps for creating a video song are exactly the same as above, except that this time you would be recording your video as well to go with the audio. This could also be seen as a technique for the generally shy people to slowly overcome their stage fear. While you are recording the song, no one else is watching you. But once you publish it, everyone sees your song and provides comments and suggestions. And before you realize it, you become confident enough to sing in front of a live audience!

And finally, another awesome feature of this app is the ability to sing along with celebrities. Yep, you heard it right. Users can join their favorite stars (Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Charlie Puth, Shawn Mendes, Lukas Graham, Anne-Marie and many more), and show it off to the entire world. These celebrity invites don’t expire, so you can join them anytime you want. Now how cool is that!

So How Much Do I Need to Pay for This App?

This would be a question that comes to everyone’s mind once they hear about all the above-mentioned features. Well, you can join other invites for free without any kind of subscription. But if you want to upload your own karaoke songs and open invites, then you need to upgrade to a VIP account. And here is a good news for Android users – you only need to pay around $10 for a one-year subscription. But if you are an iPhone user, well, multiply that amount by 5! I guess owning an iPhone puts you in the bracket of 'rich' users.

Now here is a small secret. Instead of subscribing from your phones, you can go to the app's desktop site, login to your account, and get a VIP Pass. You only need to pay Android rates here, irrespective of which phone you use. In other words, iPhone users can get a VIP Pass by paying the same amount as their Android counterparts using this method ;). And I can assure you that this app is definitely worth every penny!

To Conclude....

After a busy day at work, Smule would be the perfect tool to relax yourself and calm your senses. It is an excellent stress-buster, and definitely one of the best apps I have used in recent times. It is also a great platform to meet new people who share a similar interest with you, and even make some great friends. And no one is going to judge your singing ability there - it is an app for us ordinary singers to sing our hearts out.

So if you do have a genuine passion for singing, then what are you waiting for??

Thank you so much Helen! Really appreciate your feedback :)

And let me see if I can include a video here.

I really enjoyed your writing style and if only I had a cell phone I would love to have that app. It sounds like lots of fun. Sorry I can't be of any help with suggestions except to say a video would do wonders for this article.
