Neither Tony Danza Nor Judith Light Is the Boss When He Joins the Fire Department
Cinco De Mayo celebrations should be good to go, or so most health officials are projecting. As long as COVID-19 cases continue to decline and vaccinations remain at the current pace, folks can celebrate the May Fifth occasion the say they had done every year prior to the pandemic.
Those health officials, however, have said absolutely nothing about the holiday that precedes Cinco De Mayo, a little known date designed to honor a certain branch of our emergency workers. It is called National Firefighters Day, and it occurs every year on the fourth of May.
For those of us still reluctant to venture out for fear of a lingering virus, we can still show appreciation to all flame dowsers at home. Almost a dozen classic sitcoms have aired episodes in which a regular character serves time with a fire rescue unit, almost a day's worth of viewing that would be quite appropriate for the fourth day in May.
Here are ten of those sitcom episodes involving one of its stars working with a fire department.
1. Seinfeld
Kramer (portrayed by Michael Richards) participates on a fire run, during which his steering leads to a much confusion on the way.
2. The Flintstones
In a town made of stone, Fred and Barney use the department as an excuse to get away from their wives for a few hours.
3. The Simpsons
Homer does help quench a few fires in Springfield, but mostly he uses his authority to pillage the victims.
4. Green Acres
In “Hail to the Fire Chief” Uncle Joe Carson (portrayed by Edgar Buchanon) agrees to allow Oliver Douglas to join the voluntary fire department of Hooterville, expecting that Douglas will pay for its upcoming trip.
5. King of the Hill
Hank and his pals volunteer for the department in an episode titled “A-Fire Fighting We Will Go.”
6. Family Guy
Peter Griffin spends much of an episode recalling the many part time jobs he held, including a stint at “Quahog Fire Station No. 5.”
7. iCarly
Big bother Spencer (portrayed by Jerry Trainor) decides to donate some time at the local firehouse
8. The Office
“Stress Relief” features Dwight (portrayed by Riann Wilson), as a member of the Scranton squad, going overboard on a fire drill.
9. Who's the Boss
Called “Four Alarm Tony, the title character in this episode decides to help out with the emergency unit.
10. I Love Lucy
“Lucy and Viv Are Volunteer Firemen”, the title of the episode, pretty much sums up the plot.
