WARNING: This hub contains spoilers for the movie and the games
This article is a comparison of the monsters from the 2006 movie Silent Hill and their original video game counterparts. The plot of the movie loosely follows the plot of the first game but many of the monsters were taken from the game of Silent Hill 2 and their origins were changed. The monsters from movie were the physical manifestations of Alessa's, a girl who was tortured and burned for being a "witch", pain and hatred but in the games they have different origins. In Silent Hill the game the monsters come from the hellish world that was created when Alessa's mother and the cult she was involved with failed in trying to sacrifice her and birth a god to bring about a paradise. In the game Silent Hill 2 the monsters are physical manifestations of the protagonist's pain and guilt of his wife's death.
[Keep an eye out for my hub about the monsters from the movie sequel once it's released]
Grey Children / Mumblers
The Grey Children as they are referred to in the film look like naked childlike creatures with twisted bodies and twisted, screaming faces with rotting skin which begins to smolder and burn. They emit a high pitched screaming sound and attack with their claws. They represent Alessa when she was burned alive and they burn and scream like she did. They also reach out for Rose as if trying to hug her and hold on to her.
The Mumblers in the game Silent Hill 1 look like faceless childlike creatures with only a mouth and they attack with knives. They make distorted child laughing sounds when they attack. Mumblers represent the children that teased Alessa in school.
Armless Creature / Lying Figure
The Armless creature in the movie looks like a man who's head and arms have been wrapped in rotted skin. They have an opening in their chest which sprays an acidic black tar like substance. They have skinny contorted legs and twist and writhe as they walk. The Armless creature is a representation of Alessa after she was burned and stuck in the hospital wrapped in bandages and unable to do anything except lash out with her rage and hate.
The Lying Figures in Silent Hill 2 were the inspiration for the Armless creature in the film. They look like a sulking woman in a straitjacket made of mottled bloody skin that covers the head. They also appear to have black platform boots that blend into their legs. They shuffle along and writhe and contort as well as spray a yellowish mist from an opening in the front of their bodies. When they are knocked down they skitter across the floor using their legs. They represent the protagonist's internal suffering due to his wife being confined to a hospital bed and her constant lashing out at him.
The Janitor / Corpse in the Bathroom Stall
The Janitor creature from the film starts off as a corpse in a bathroom stall twisted and bound with barbed wire. When the otherworld transformation occurs he breaks free from his stall but is still bound with barbed wire, his feet are wired to the back of his head and his eyes are barb wired over. He drags himself along with his hands and the walls decay with his touch and release cockroaches. The Janitor creature is Colin, a janitor who worked at Alessa's school who molested her in the bathroom stall.
In the videogame Silent Hill 1 Harry, the protagonist, finds a corpse in the bathroom stall but it never actually comes to life. The Janitor was created from scratch for the movie.
Cockroaches / Creepers
In the film the Cockroaches that emerge from the bathroom with the janitor look like large roach type bugs that swarm and eat anything that move. They also have humanoid faces and surround the Red Pyramid monster. Although there's no explanation on what they represent, they may stem from Alessa's fear of insects like in the game, or the cultists themselves how they swarm and blindly attack anything they encounter.
They are called Creepers in the game. They are featured in both Silent Hill1 and 2. They look like large cockroaches, similar to how they look in the film only in much smaller numbers. They attack by biting the protagonist's feet. They represent a general fear of insects.
Red Pyramid / Pyramid Head
In the film the Red Pyramid monster looks like a tall muscular man with scarred skin wearing a dark grey metal helmet in the shape of a sharp narrow pyramid and an apron made of stitched flesh. He wields a large knife-like sword which he drags along. He is the manifestation of Alessa's punishment for the people who tortured her. In the original script for the film six of these Red Pyramid monsters were supposed to appear in the church at the end of the film to finish off the cult.
The Red Pyramid was based on Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2. He looks like a large man wearing a bloody white apron with white 3 fingered gloves and black boots. His helmet looks like a metal 4 sided pyramid and he drags along a giant knife or a spear. If he manages to get a hold of the protagonist, what looks like a long black tongue comes out from his helmet. He is a manifestation of the protagonist's guilt to punish him for what he did to his wife.
Dark Nurse / Bubble Head Nurse
The film's Dark Nurses look like nurses wearing revealing leathery, skin-like uniforms and hats with decayed veiny skin and horribly distorted, featureless and unrecognizable faces. They carry different weapons ranging from small blades to steel pipes. They only react to light or physical contact. Their joints pop and crack when they walk and they convulse violently. They guard the room where Alessa's is kept and their overly sexual yet distorted appearance comes from her jealousy from the fact she will never be able to mature into a woman like them.
The Bubblehead nurses from Silent Hill 2 look similar with some differences. They wear bloody and revealing outfits made from regular cloth and they all carry steel pipes. Their faces however are smoother and have no features except for a almost insect like mouth on their chins. They also appear to have what looks like hair made from skin. They represent the nurses that the protagonist despised for not being able to help his wife. Their overly sexual appearance also represents his sexual frustration while his wife was bedridden.
Red Nurse / Lisa Garland
The Red Nurse from the movie and Lisa Garland from Silent Hill 1 have the same role in both stories, as the nurse who is stuck in Silent hill and has to take care of Alessa. In the film she was a nurse who was curious about Alessa and when she peeked in on her she was blinded and forced to be her caretaker, while in the game she had a much larger role. She was assigned as Alessa's nurse after she was first brought into the hospital and became trapped in Silent Hill when the events took place. It wasn't until the events of the game that she realized she was already dead and was like all the other monsters in the town.
The Scarred Alessa from the movie is Alessa's burned body, now an adult, bandaged in her hospital bed surrounded by yards and yards if barbed wire which she controls and uses to kill the cult members. This monstrosity was based on the burned Alessa from Silent Hill 1 who is burned, bandaged, and stuck in her hospital bed, which never actually grows barbed wire and attacks people. That aspect of her was taken from the design of the Mary/Maria boss from Silent Hill 2 which was a woman in a cage like bed frame which attacks with a wire like tentacle...and moths.
Dark Alessa / Memory of Alessa
The Dark Alessa character from the film is a childlike demon that manifested from Alessa's hate and anger; a revenge seeking demon that came from all the dark and angry emotions she harbored inside. Her soul split during the time was hospitalized, forming the Dark Alessa and the good/innocent Sharon. She looks like the child version of Alessa but grungier with bloody skin.
Although there is no "demonic" Alessa in the video game of Silent Hill 1 she looks like a variation of a creature you have to fight in Silent Hill 3 known as "The Memory of Alessa" which is the part of Alessa that remains trapped in Silent Hill after Alessa leaves and then forgets who she is. She appears in the amusement park and tries to kill the teenage Alessa. She looks like her but with black hair (Alessa has dyed her hair blonde in the game), grungy clothes and pulsating bloody skin.
Since the Movie...
Video Game Monsters Inspired by the Film
Since the film's release the Silent Hill games that have come out have featured monsters that have been inspired by the film. This is most obvious in the game Silent Hill Homecoming which feature Nurses that look exactly like the ones in the movie, as well as the Boogeyman which looks exactly like the Red Pyramid monster from the film. The Smog monsters in SH Homecoming look like Armless creatures that smolder and burn like the Grey Children.
The game Silent Hill Origins, the first released since the movie, features faceless nurses that look more like the movie ones than the SH2 versions. This game also has Straight-Jacket monsters that look like the Armless creatures/Lying Figures. Although they aren't exactly like their movie versions they were inspired by the film since they were made popular by the movie - this is the first time a Silent Hill monster's likeness has been repeated in another game.
In Silent Hill: Shattered Memories there are monsters called Raw Shocks that look similar to the Mumblers of SH1 but have no faces or knives. They attack like the Grey Children from the movie by grabbing and dragging their victims and overpowering them, again a first for the series that was introduced in the film. This is also The first time in the game series where you can't attack the monsters, you just have to run...just like Rose in the film.

(I'm a girl, by the way.)
I don't mind scary movies but I immensely detest movies or games when things jump out of you, just about giving you a heartache. However, my sister convinced me to watch the movie, saying it was fantastic. I agreed, somewhat hesitantly, and absolutely loved it! But I'm still not game enough to play the games themselves. The choreography in the movie was absolutely astounding, as was the attention to detail on all of the characters, mainly the creatures. The idea of the mystery and the representations made you think throughout the entire movie, considering every detail that you saw.

Rich in detail, nice work! I personally think they did Pyramid Head / Red Pyramid the best honour. His entirety is just amazing to look at, it's almost divine, like someone to worship.
Silent Hill is just one of those games I cannot play. Clunky controls aren't my cup of tea, but I do love and respect the story and atmosphere.

Thanks for the hard work making comparisons! Very helpful notes on what the monsters represented.. I have not seen this movie and as always there are many mixed reviews, the negative ones usually from the gamer fans. From what I have been able to deduce, this is a very original motion-picture!

Fantastic work! Love it, man, I enjoyed the Silent Hill movie so much, I think it was one of the rare movies that was true the the game it was made from. This took a lot of work, kudos!
