Sherlock Holmes the movie

SHERLOCK HOLMES the movie is an enjoyable movie to watch. When I was a kid, I was never that into the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. I guess I never had the patience for mysteries. I did not like Nancy Drew much either but now in my adulthood, I recently rented the film, Sherlock Holmes from the RedBox. I really did enjoy watching Sherlock Holmes the movie.

Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in SHERLOCK HOLMES the movie

Sherlock Holmes the movie is very well made and Sherlock Holmes the movie will hold your attention. Seeing some of his other roles, I have come to really respect Robert Downey Jr. as a movie actor and his performance in this movie role of Sherlock Holmes is no exception. He does a great job as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes the movie. He brings a quirkiness and a neurosis to the character that we all know as Sherlock Holmes.

This Sherlock Holmes is sometimes hired by the police but he often works as a private detective/investigator hired by families trying to solve crimes that often might have involved the murder of a loved one.

  • Downey's Sherlock Holmes is truly brilliant and absorbed in his work.
  • He ponders over even the most minute details to put the pieces of a puzzle together and solve a case.

Jude Law as Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes the movie

In SHERLOCK HOLMES the movie, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson live together. They are best friends and business partners. Dr. Watson is a medical doctor that is able to assist with the scientific parts of solving a case.

  • In SHERLOCK HOLMES the movie, the movie actor, Jude Law also plays the role of Dr. Watson very well, often with very animated facial expressions as he has to have a lot of patience to deal with Sherlock Holmes' shenanigans.
  • The friendship is strong nevertheless and withstands quite a lot of conflict that occurs throughout the film including Sherlock Holmes' disapproval of Dr. Watson's preparing to move away as he is becoming engaged to be married.

In this movie, the character Sherlock Holmes is very comedic and entertaining

The way the character Sherlock Holmes acts throughout the film is quite comedic and it makes Sherlock Holmes the movie very entertaining.

After one case, he becomes a bit of a hermit not leaving his home for two weeks and tinkering with various experiments even getting his pet dog involved as he tries various drugs and anecdotes.

When people like Dr. Watson or Dr. Watson's fiancee Mary show concern for the dog, Sherlock Holmes favorite thing to say is "He [the dog] doesn't mind". Naturally, all the film goers would be against animal testing and animal cruelty but the way this is portrayed in the film is one of the high points of the comedy because the adorable bulldog always pops up after being drugged and is just fine.

The dog belongs to both Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Dr. Watson constantly pleads with Sherlock Holmes to stop his experiments on the dog but he won't stop.

He doesn't mind.

Sherlock Holmes must save the day

The case that is supposedly closed and now has Sherlock Holmes being a hermit at home while he waits for his next case is not closed for long.

Scroll to Continue

It involves alleged black magic and a serial killer Lord Blackwood who is to be hanged for his crimes. He is responsible for the murders of five women. Thanks to Sherlock Holmes, he is caught and apprehended before he is able to commit a sixth murder.

Dr. Watson signs on as the attending physician who will verify that Lord Blackwood is indeed dead after he is hanged.

  1. Watson tells Holmes that he volunteered for the position of attending physician because he wanted to see the case through to the very end.
  2. Nevertheless, shortly after Dr. Watson pronounces Lord Blackwood dead, there are announced sightings of him to give the impression that he has returned from the dead through his "magic".

Blackwood's perceived magic has everyone terrified of his power as he plots to bring destruction. Sherlock Holmes must save the day.

I rented this movie on DVD and I really enjoyed it. I was laughing for most of the movie because of Sherlock Holmes. Sometimes the most serious and discrete things he did was hilarious. I don't know why.

Good review!

Hi FCEtier, I hope you enjoy the DVD when you watch it. Thanks so much for posting your comment. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again after you've watched the movie.

A co-worker loaned me this DVD just yesterday and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I've long been a fan of SH and another of Sir ACD's books, "The Lost World" (yes, dinosaurs).

Some of what you describe sounds like typical behavior for Holmes(attention to detail, moodiness, reclusiveness) while some of it does not. I never associated Holmes stories with comedy.

I'll comment again after watching the movie.

Hi alekhouse, thanks so much for your comment. I think I know what you mean but I am not sure. For example, I think some of the action, especially the fight sequences had a bit of a dizzying effect with the camera angles and speed. There were also some farfetched elements with the magic and you are not sure if that is a serious part of the plot until you get to the very end of the film. That created a bit of a fantasy element as well.

Nancy Hinchliff from Essex Junction, Vermont on July 27, 2010:

I saw this movie and it really wasn't that well done. The acting was great, especially Robert Downey Jr, who was terrific, as usual. I love Sherlock Holmes stories, but the filming of this one was quite overdone.
