Sean Kanan Deserves Better Than the Soap World Gives Him

AJ Quartermaine went down hill all the way

Sean Kanan walked away from his General Hospital character AJ Quartermaine because he did not like the direction Alan Jr. was headed. He said he did not sign up to do panic attacks and storylines about relish so he left the ABC soap. Even before this AJ had become pathetic and did not have the same passion and drive as the other members of the Q family. AJ was written as the black sheep of the Q clan and he became an alcoholic who lost his son Michael (Chad Duel) to Carly and Sonny Corinthos (Laura Wright and Maurice Benard). Kanan joined the soap in 1993 and left GH in 1997. He returned in 2012 with the hopes that his character would be developed but it did not happen so he left again in 2014. AJ died after Ava Jerome (Mara West) tricked Sonny into shooting him. Kanan has now reprised his role as Deacon Sharp on The Bold and the Beautiful but this character is very similar to AJ. and not written in a way where fans can respect him. Deacon was on B&B from October 1, 2000, to February 22, 2005.] From June 23, 2009, to January 30, 2012, the character appeared on its sister soap The Young and the Restless . Deacon returned to B&B for short stints in 2012 and 2014. He came back in 2021 and has remained bu no one knows for how long.

Deacon is also manipulated by women

Deacon, like AJ, finds himself being manipulated by the female characters on the soaps and he also is not respected by men. No one really takes him seriously and Sharp also had a child taken from him as his daughter Hope (Anika Noelle) was raised by Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye). Everyone in the Forrester, Logan and Spencer families considers Sharp a loser except Hope and women continually manipulate him. On General Hospital in addition to Carly and Ava pulling his strings, AJ also had to contend with his nasty aunt Tracy Quartermaine ( Jane Elliot) putting him down. On The Bold and the Beautiful Quinn Fuller (Rena Sofer) toyed with Deacon's affections and pushed him over a cliff and now Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown)has been pulling his strings for months. Last week the writers had Deacon going to bed with a strange redhead who turned out to be Sheila in disguise and now Sharp is in her clutches again. The B&B writers are making Kanan's character pathetic and one has to wonder why the actor is sticking around on the CBS soap as he is receiving the same treatment he walked away from on ABC.

Deacon on The Young and the Restless

The character of Deacon Sharp also spent time on The Young and the Restless where Amber Moore (Adrian Frantz) led him into all kinds of trouble. Yes, Deacon has made bad decisions b there is always a woman who seems to encourage him to take the wrong path. Recently history was changed when Diane Jenkins (Cynthia Watros) returned from the dead and came back to Genoa City. She announced something that left fans scratching their heads as this was the first time it had been mentioned. M s. Jenkins announced that Sharp had helped her fake her death decades ago. According to Diane, it was Deacon who found a corpse to place in the coffin so everyone would believe she was dead.Y&R viewers were stunned at this new turn of events and some thought Deacon might end up in Genoa City again. It's not clear why the writers of all three soaps view Kanan's characters as losers who are unredeemable. Kanan is a talented actor who has proven himself in other roles like Sam Sevens on Studio City, in The Karate Kid Part III and Cobra Kai. There are plenty of soap characters who have been redeemed so the writers could turn things around for Deacon and they should. Kanan's character deserves more than being a jailbird, working as a waiter at II Giardino, and being Sheila's cohort. The character deserve much better than waking up to find out Sheila has dubbed him. Lets hope her antics don't lead to Kanan's character returning to jail.
