Symphony of Enchanted Lands Part 2 Musical Style and Concepts

If Rhapsody of Fire’s 2002 album Power of the Dragonflame is better than Dawn of Victory, then how good is their 2004 album called Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2- The Dark Secret? Italy’s fantasy power metal experts embark on yet a different chapter in their careers for this one. This is the first album of the Dark Secret saga and it is also the last album under the band’s former name Rhapsody. It has a concept orientation to it with people such as the late Christopher Lee narrating spoken parts as the character called “The Wizard King.” Erian’s Mystical Rhymes (The White Dragon’s Order) starts with some unusual growling voice as the chants take its place.

Fabio Lione Deserves Much Credit for the Success of the Band Formerly Known as Rhapsody

The vocal contributions that are used to help Fabio Lione were started in songs such as Echoes of Tragedy back in 1997. Fast forward to 2004 and the instrumentation in this long song is a good accompaniment to the song itself.

Author’s note: it is necessary to say a big thank you to Fabio Lione, the man who spent his time with the band Rhapsody of Fire from 1995 through 2016 and put in his time, effort, and dedication to make the band what they are today. Without his contribution, the band may not be what it is today.

"Unholy Warcry"

One Con About Rhapsody of Fire is That Their Album Covers Have Become Predictable

However, the band’s album covers have become predictable as they usually have a warrior on a dragon trying to save the kingdom or there is a lone dragon showing its might and power as it is flying over a castle. Where is that dragon flying to? It may be depicted as flying off to a faraway land.

How Can Rhapsody of Fire Become a Better Band?

There are ways that this band could attract more fans and that is to include songs that have lyrics that are easier to interpret instead of relying on trying to figure out stories that come from fantasy tales.

Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2 - The Dark Secret has Dark Moor Influences in It as Well as Some Positive Messages

However, the song called Unholy Warcry has a message in it that must be passed on to others. That message is that we need more freedom and peace in this world. However, people must work towards establishing a more peaceful world. As history has shown, there has been much empire building, colonization and an endless desire to prove ourselves through the use of use of force. The song has Dark Moor style interludes. Elgard’s Green Valleys is a song that has the sound of birds chirping, and the drum beats are in the background as well as the sound of horse hooves. There is a message of support in the song’s one line of lyrics so this song is almost like an instrumental song without actually being labelled as an instrumental song. The Last Angels’ Call is a song about seven wizards making the long journey from another land to meet with kings, dwarves, and elves. If this is by coincidence or not, the Brazilian band Angra has an album called Angels Cry and Fabio is now their lead singer! It is interesting how time can change people’s lives, sometimes for the better.

Favorite Album Under the Band's Former Name

More Pros and Cons about the Band Formerly Known as Rhapsody

Even though Rhapsody of Fire has good songwriting skills, their main weakness is that they have this generic formula where their songs have that thundering drumming kind of sound and they tend to focus on too much narration about fantasy kind of stories. This approach may be good for those of us that need a distraction to temporarily escape from our real world issues but that means that this band suffers from being too generic musically. I will not complain about the talents of Fabio Lione and Luca Turilli however. Fabio Lione has to be in the discussion as one of the best heavy metal singers in Italy’s history. I probably prefer his vocals of those of Fabio Dozzo (ex-Skylark).

"Shadows of Death"

Final Thoughts About the Album Symphony of Enchanted Lands Part 2

Nightfall on the Grey Mountains starts with some Latin style chants and this album wraps up the era of the band known as Rhapsody. I think that their current band name is better because their former name is a bit too generic. Is Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2 a better album than the first one? No it is not but it is a good way for the band to end this first chapter of their career which lasted from 1993 through 2004.
