Series Review

I recently watched/completed all the series, which is a western mystery/thriller series. I got hooked early on. I like shows that make you think.

I was thinking about it and in a lot of ways, the main character, Sheriff Walt Longmire, isn’t particularly loveable as he has a lot of quirks. But I got to respect the character as his integrity and honor was something that he sticks to. He has unconventional methods. He isn’t a talker, both in public speaking and one on one. He does not have a cell phone, which is touched on often.

In the first few seasons, every episode starts with a murder scene. The third season is probably my favorite as everything ramps up to that point. It gets intense. There are many twists. Later on in the seasons, the episodes often focus on ongoing drama instead of particular crimes, which are mostly murders.

There is excellent character development in this series. You get to know main characters and also many secondary characters. Many secondary characters appear periodically. There is a lot of conflict and much of the series is suspenseful.

Henry, played by Lou Diamond Phillips is the Sheriff’s friend and their friendship is a common theme that comes up. Both the sheriff and Henry have different ways of doing things, with Henry often working in grey areas. It is interesting to see the development of Ferg, one of the deputies. He starts out as a bumbling fool, but he gains a lot of confidence throughout the series. The villains are quite devious.

It was interesting how it depicts life on an Native American reservation as it is close to the small town. I thought that aspect was educational, however I do not know how accurately it is depicted.

The whole series is rated MA because of things that happen in a few episodes, otherwise there was nothing offensive other than violence related to crime.

Thank you for your comment.

Yes, I was hooking. I don't like getting hooked on shows. But like I said, when it all came together in the third season, I was hooked.

Are there any other shows/series that you have gotten hooked on? I was hooked on the Shield on FX (like a male soap opera, with a lot of action/violence) and Heroes (ABC about super heroes)

I like your review. I fell in love with the series on Netflix as well. You can definitely see the transition from episodic formula to multi-episode story arcs once Netflix picked it up as an original series. Great show overall and a great review.
