His name and face may not be familiar yet, but this is Reggie Freeman, an actor, singer, and media personality, who has been doing his due diligence in crafting a career trajectory he feels makes him ready for prime time.
If any of you are fans of the TV series, 'Fatal Attraction' on TVOne, you no doubt have seen Reggie as he has had a recurring role on that series. And for any of you who like comedy sketch web-series on YouTube, you may have run across Reggie's family series, "The Freeman Show".
I caught up with Reggie recently to discuss his projects and how he feels he is poised for the next chapter and plateau of his acting career for 2021.
Reggie’s mini bio
Ingeniously funny, extraordinarily gifted, extremely ambitious... These are only mere understatements for the multi-faced actor and dancer, Reginald ''Reggie'' Freeman. Reggie began his path towards success in the early 90's by performing in numerous churches in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) of Augusta, GA. A man of great physical coordination, he has also won several talent dance contests throughout the area.During a personal conversation with a famed entertainer, Reggie heard the advice that would shape his present and future career. "Work hard," James Brown said, and Reggie immediately began just that! Reggie always had a burning passion to perform professionally both on stage and screen.
My career started in theater with countless stage productions.
Also have a Nationwide gospel group that I'm a part of called (Absolution). The music plays all over the world.
Q&A with Reggie Freeman
RW) When I was reading your bio, I was struck by the sentence that you always had a burning passion to perform professionally on stage and screen. When is your earliest recollection of when you knew this where you said this is what I want to do - to act?
RF) First and foremost, I Thank God for all He’s done and back to your question; the gift was there before I came out the womb. I put it this way. I didn’t choose acting but acting chose me. Speaking of which, no matter if I do something else, something inside of me keeps pulling me back towards the arts of acting or portrayal. For example, we all know that birds are built to fly. If you cut the wings off a bird and they have to walk around all day, they will be miserable and may end up dying. The bird’s wings are an indication of what’s on the inside of them. Even without the wings, they desire to fly but does not have the tangible tools to fly with. God gives us our gift that starts on the inside that we can’t ignore because it’s built in. But as we work by faith, the tangible tools from the outside that we use for the world to see is the indication of what’s on the inside of us for the people to enjoy. This is the reason why I had Thank God for all He’s done before I answered your question. So therefore, I’ve been acting before I knew I was acting. From kindergarten through college, I tend to make people laugh without trying and entertain them as well. I’m dancing at pep rallies doing the Michael Jackson and just being the life of the party. Everyone in my class was glad to come to school because I was there, and they knew I was going to do something exciting so they can feel good for that day. Even the teachers and principal loved it. I just thank God for the gift because I am nothing without Him. Now with the gift that God gave me, I’m learning the knowledge of the business of acting to succeed in film and television. My career first started with countless theatre stage and I’m making a transition in film and television. I believe the time is now. The season has arrived. With the gift which is the foundation and the training of the business is the relationship of what the business requires, I’m ready to take my career to a whole nother level through Christ. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
RW) Who were some of your favorite actors as a kid growing up?
RF) As a kid, I used to look at shows like Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek, Gilligan’s Island, Star Wars, Good Times, Different Strokes and etc.. etc.. I enjoyed Gary Coleman as an actor but didn’t really have or think about a favorite actor or actress at that time. But as I got older my favorite actors were Marlon Brando, Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier, Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Robert Downy Jr & Al Pacino. I had a chance to watch Robert Downy Jr in person when I was an extra on Due Date. I watched and learned how authentic and how instinctively his choices were in the conversation with Zach Galifianakis at the Waffle House scene. I remember like it was yesterday when they finished the scene and he was about to get in the car and go. He stood right beside me, I wanted to speak to him, but I was too afraid that if I would have said something to him, I would have gotten in trouble. But I did talk to Zach Galifianakis and he was really cool. Zack actually came up to me to talk to me. I really appreciated that conversation.
RW) If there is any one actor you would like to co-star with in a movie or on a TV series, who would that be and why?
RF) I would like to co-star in a movie with Denzel Washington because I can learn a lot from him mentally. As a matter of fact, he’s one of the actors in whom I study. He appears to be a very spiritual person in which I am too as well. My desire is to be in the movies alongside him to learn and grow as an actor. He’s a legend. I hope to meet him one day. On a tv series, I would love to be alongside Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and Viola Davis.
RW) What is your favorite movie, and your favorite TV series of all time?
RF) My favorite movie is Superman with Christopher Reeve that’s because I grew up watching The Super friends cartoon. My favorite TV series of all time is Good Times. I just love everything about that show. The show has a positive meaning and great morals.
RW) How would you describe yourself as an actor, or what do you feel you gravitate more towards in acting, comedy? Drama?
RF) I describe myself as a versatile actor, I can portray anything that’s placed in front of me if I choose to portray it. I love to be in suspense, comedy, drama and action movies. My major goal is to be in a marvel movie or tv series. I always had this dream ever since I was a little kid to be in marvel movies to play a superhero or a villain.
RW) Now you have your own TV series in the form of a web-series that airs on YouTube. What is the series’ name, what is the show about, and what made you come up with this show idea?
RF) Well the show originated in my mind when I was a kid watching Caption Kangaroo a long time ago. I just didn’t know when I was able to get it done. As a kid, I always said I’ll have my own show one day. So, in 2020 when the pandemic originated, that same idea came in my mind to do it. So, me and my family got together and did it by faith. The Show is called; The Freeman Show. This Show is Designed for everyone, but the main focus is for the children ages 2 to 18 to Uplift, Encourage, Motivate and Teach Each Child Spiritual Divine Principles of God Around the World. I just wanted to bring back the good wholesome moral shows that I loved as a kid to teach each child great principles as well as teenagers and adults. TV shows have gotten away from that and that’s why so many kids are lost with no hope because of the corrupted tv programing that they tune in to. I’m not saying there’s something wrong with the shows. It’s just the fact that for most families, nobody is there to teach the kids to not do everything they see on tv. For me all shows are creative art, but my main concern is for the children not to be influenced for everything they see on tv and start engaging in the activity they see and that’s why The Freeman Show is there to help. Smile!
First and foremost, I Thank God for all He’s done and back to your question; the gift was there before I came out the womb. I put it this way. I didn’t choose acting but acting chose me."
RW) Are there any plans to maybe pitch the show to a BET + or a network?
RF) Most definitely. My desire is to place The Freeman Show in as many networks as possible. I believe they will pick it up and run with it because this show was designed by God. I had no idea how it was going to turn out, but I made plans with my heart and God directed my steps. Awesome show! I can’t wait until the world sees it.
RW) Besides your web series, what are some of the movies or TV series our readers may have seen you on?
RF) I’m sure they saw me on TV ONE’s Fatal Attraction. Season 2 Episode 12 (If I Can’t Have You), Season 6 Episode 9 (Killer Or Victim). You may have seen me in a film called Insanity of God as well in which I portrayed a doctor that was in selected theatres that did well and had over a million views. You may have seen me in BrothAhood series Seasons 1,2 & 3. We will be filming Season 4 later this year. As I started off in film and television as an extra you may have seen me in Madea Goes To Jail, Due Date, Drop Dead Diva and Medea’s Big Happy Family.
RW) Acting is not your only artistic ability, you also sing in a gospel group? Tell our readers the group’s name and how did you become involved with them?
RF) Yes, I was inspired by groups like the Temptations, Jackson 5, New Edition, Troop and etc.. etc. So I just wanted to be a part of a group. So, I sing in the choir at my church. I met this other gentleman named Wayne Mims that sings in the choir with me. Actually, he’s the one who asked me to join the choir. To make a long story short, I asked him; do he want to form a group? But little did I know, he already had a group. He asked me if I want to join the group. I said yes! So, this is how I got on by auditioning for the part and I booked it. So, we practiced and practiced until we were ready to record in the studio. I can tell you it was an awesome experience. Singing is not as easy as it looks especially when you’re in the studio. The group is called Absolution Gospel Group and Absolution means forgiveness. You can find Absolution Gospel Group on all major platforms online for example; Spotify, Pandora, iTunes/Apple Music, Google Play, Deezer, Amazon, and YouTube.
RW) Are there any other aspects to your acting and singing career you have out there professionally? And what are some of your goals for 2021?
RF) I believe in February 2021 Season 11 Episode 4; I’ll be on Fatal Attraction again making it my 3rd time. I’m also on another TV series that’s coming out this year called Vengeance (Killer Families) Series 1 Episode 10 – Keri Murphy and Rebecca Keller that I’ll be a part of portraying detective Clopton. Also, you may have seen me in some films which are called Ultimate Alibi, Contrary Lee Speaking that’s on Amazon Prime right now. I will also be in other films that will be out later on in 2021 that are called Kadence, Redemption of Easter, Tattoo, The Staff, and The Assistant that will be streaming on Amazon Prime and other streaming services. My goal in 2021 is to become a working actor and to help those that are struggling to get an understanding of the business. Also, I would love for my show called The Freeman Show to be on major networks so the kids can be influenced to do what’s right. As far as my singing career, once this pandemic moves away, we will continue to perform in many cities like we did before the pandemic came. My goal also is to make a strong impact in visiting schools and talking to the kids, teenagers and college students about not losing hope and faith in their dreams. This journey is not about me. My intent and purpose of success is to help others along the way. God doesn’t just give us a gift to use for our satisfaction, but He gives us a gift or gifts to help others.
RW) If you were asked to speak to the graduating class of 2021 at Morehouse College, to students getting ready to embark on a career in the arts, what words of inspiration would you share with them?
RF) I would simply tell them whatever you do in the journey for your career, please put God first in everything you do and please don’t ever lose faith and never give up. If you can see it, just believe it and you will achieve it. If you don’t lose faith, God will direct your steps. In other words, and let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. (Galatians 6:9)
Thank you Reggie. We wish you continued and heightened success in your career, with your series, and with your singing group.
