Why Not to Sleep Naked: Reasons I Don't Sleep Naked

Bed Time!

reasons-i-dont-sleep-naked

Being a very open and honest person. I decided to get a little personal and tell the Internet world why I don't sleep naked. Odds are the majority of you reading this right now do, in fact, sleep naked. And are probably thinking to yourself.....

1) "Wow, she is getting pretty intimate with this hub."

or

2) "Why on Earth would she not sleep naked? It's comfortable and freeing, letting it all hang out."

Believe me, I do have plenty of good reasons to not sleep naked. And after reading this you too may change your opinion about sleeping naked. So lets take a look at my reasons not to sleep naked.

My Reasons Not to Sleep Naked

1.) Fires. My house catching on fire is one of my worst fears and I am sure I share this fear with many, many others. And what a horrible time to be naked. Say your sleeping peacefully in your bed when suddenly (I hope this doesn't happen to any of you) your fire alarm goes off. You wake up to the loud noise and the smell of smoke and you are naked. So now you have a flaming house and you have to either a) run out of your house naked or b) waste time finding clothes and getting dressed. A very good reason not to sleep naked.

2.) Robbers. Once again a big fear of mine. Having my house broken into. Similar scenario, you are sleeping without any clothes and you hear someone enter your home. Hello! It's bad enough they are breaking into your home you don't need them to see you naked as well. Put on some pj's a avoid the awkwardness of strangers breaking into your home and seeing you naked.

3.) Pets. I, like many other pet owners, will fully admit to allowing my dogs into my bedroom at night. Sometimes they sleep in the bed, sometimes the closet, and sometimes underneath the bed. I don't think I need to explain this one.... but do you really want to be sleeping naked next to your furry friend? Yeah, I didn't think so.

4.) Kids. I understand not all of us have kids. And some of us who do have locks on their bedroom doors. I personally have no lock on my bedroom door. And I have a 3 year old son who has a tendency of waking me at 3 am by silently staring at me from my bedside. It's 3 am and I was just woken up in a very creepy manner. The last thing on my mind is whether I am wearing any clothes or not. Now if I slept naked I would likely jump straight out of bed and head down the hall to put my son back to bed. Which either a) cause my son to ask a handful of awkward questions or b) frighten him enough that he's never going back to sleep.

5.) Sleeping Walking.  Now I have never in my life had a problem with sleep waking. But who is to say I don't start tonight? Sure I might just wander aimlessly around my own house. But what if leave the house and begin wandering the streets or worse yet decide to take a naked drive!

6.) Cold. O.K. this probably isn't going to be a problem for those of you living in warmer climates. Or in the warmer months. But I live in Canada and turns out it gets cold here. And I am not sure if I am the only one. But when I get cold in bed I have a tendency of pulling up the covers and shivering myself back to sleep. You know, rather than doing something logical like turning up the heat or grabbing another blanket. The odds of this happening only increases when you sleep naked.

7.) Significant Others. This is more likely to happen on that night you aren't feeling 100% and you jump into bed with full intentions of going right to sleep. Yeah, jumping into bed naked can send your significant other the wrong message if you know what I mean.

8.) Not Owning Pj's.  I understand that a lot of people who sleep naked on a regular basis do not even own a pair of pj's. You are missing out. They are just so soft and comfortable. And what the heck do you do if you go camping or stay at a friends house. I don't know about you. But I personally would find it a little awkward to sleep in my friends bed naked. Or better yet. What if your sleeping on their couch naked and they wake up before you do!?

9.) Unexpected Period. This one is only for the ladies. So guys feel free to skip this reason. Now I get my period like clockwork. But odds are if I were to sleep naked in my nice clean sheets. This would be the time that I was visited by an unexpected period. I don't feel I need to say anymore here.

10.) Exit Only. This is by far my biggest reason not to sleep naked. Sleeping naked leaves one fully exposed. Have you ever heard that we swallow spiders in our sleep? Yeah, I wonder where else those spiders will be wandering if I decided to sleep naked. No thank-you. Not just the spiders. But really anything can enter at their own risk if you leave yourself fully exposed. Not catching my drift? I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING GOING IN MY BUM WHILE I AM SLEEPING!

Pajama's For Sale!

Now you know why I don't sleep naked. And will possibly be changing your own habits tonight. Best be gettin' yourself some pj's. :)

i always sleep naked and love it.i wouldn't like to sleep with pjs on anymore.i still keep my pjs just in case I have to go into hospital but that's about it.

This article was written for fun more so than in a serious matter! I am sorry if it offended anyone. Feel free to sleep clothed or nude!

Josie Easterday on August 29, 2015:

The only thing I would watch out for is the period thing. Everything else makes you sound like you worry too much.

Harry on August 03, 2015:

Most of the reasons you listed have more to do with your own insecurities about your body. I sleep naked because I toss and turn a lot when I sleep. wearing clothes becomes a huge tangled mess that wakes me up, and in turn, ruins my quality of sleep.

I realize it's all a matter of personal preference. But I'm not afraid of people seeing me naked. The U.S. Has some weird issue with nudity to the point it generates those "awkward questions" you spoke of. It's just the human body, natural.

As a kid and even to this day I still walk around the house naked, as did my parents and brother. It was never awkward to me since it's the natural human body.

Being uncomfortable naked is typically a since of having body imagine issues. To each their own I suppose, do it or don't do it. It's your choice. But for me, I'll be naked as often as possible. It's just more comfortable and has scientific reasons why it's better for you.

BigD on August 01, 2015:

You some some serious issues to over come

Nur on February 16, 2015:

Many people die in their sleep. I don't's want anyone to come and find my dead, naked body.

Emily on June 18, 2014:

Here's another good reason. Everyone leaks. Nightly emissions, farts, not a good job wiping, etc. Tracks on underwear are gross. Now imagine them on sheets. Sheets that you may someday want to use for a guest. Sheets that you don't want to look shabby. Now imagine you sometime kick the sheets off and blankets and maybe even come into contact with the blanket, comforter, quilt... these things are EXPENSIVE. Do you really want fecal material on them? Underwear protects more expensive clothes... and sheets and bedding.

Tracy B (author) from Canada on March 18, 2014:

Thank-you everyone!

moonlake from America on September 09, 2013:

In our younger days in hot California we slept naked but we moved to Wisconsin no one sleeps naked here.

I like all your reasons, you don't want a robber to find you naked that's a good one.

Enjoyed your hub.

FlourishAnyway from USA on September 09, 2013:

Oh this is funny -- the last one. The other are all quite reasonable, I believe. Wasn't Alec Trebec (the game show host) caught in a precarious situation when a thief broke in his hotel room but Trebec could not give immediate chase to the thief because he had been sleeping in his birthday suit? Hmmm.

Tracy B (author) from Canada on April 22, 2013:

Haha, that's ok. They are obviously of personal preferences. So not everyone is going to agree or disagree

author on April 20, 2013:

completely disagree with your thoughts..

Jayme Kinsey from Oklahoma on January 25, 2013:

This is a great hub! Funny...but at the same time it makes some very vaid points. I have one BIG reason for not sleeping naked. Tornadoes. We live right smack-dab in the middle of Tornado Alley, and those things can sneak up on you pretty fast.

So either you are running for shelter without clothes on, or the rescue team is digging your nekkid body out of rubble. Either way, that isn't how I want the neighbors to remember me!

Thanks for the great laugh and giving me a solid list of good answers to use when my husband asks me why I sleep in jeans during storm season!

Alecia Murphy from Wilmington, North Carolina on January 25, 2013:

You have very solid reasoning and I agree. Thanks for the laugh!

Tracy B (author) from Canada on January 24, 2013:

Haha yes! A fire in the closet would definitely make things worse!

Max Zvyagintsev from New Zealand on January 23, 2013:

I agree! If you sleep naked, fire is a serious problem, especially if it's in your closet.

Thank you for a great laugh!

jravity1 from bellevue, MI on January 23, 2013:

I like it... lots of good reasons here. Fire is definitely a reason for me... and most of the other ones. lol

tanyasays76 on August 26, 2012:

That was freaking hillarious! I don't sleep naked much, but I bet I will think of this hub next time I get that urge. LOL :) Thanks for the time you spent on this. And, might I add that sheets are more comfortable when I am naked, and bedclothes get bunched up when I flip and flop at night, but I, too, fear that I will not dress in time for some unforseen emergency if one should come up...and my two year old crawls in bed with us almost every night. So, no naked mommy for a few more years.

Tracy B (author) from Canada on August 03, 2012:

Thank-you for your comment Sherri! Of course whether not to sleep naked is your own personal choice. And we all have our own reasons why or why we do not sleep naked. I am not trying to convince everyone that they shouldn't nor am I telling anyone they are wrong to do so. These are just some of the reasons I choose not to, "silly" or not. It's more of a fun hub than anything else! I hope you enjoyed it.

Sheri on July 28, 2012:

Numbers 1, 2 and 5 seem rather silly to me and are all about fear. I keep a robe next to the bed, which takes no time at all to throw one when the seven-year-old knocks on our (locked) door, and would also be handy in the event of a fire.

And of course I own comfy fleece pajamas that I enjoy wearing just before bed or to lounge around on a lazy morning. But those same pajamas that I enjoy so much outside of bed would try to choke me if I keep them on overnight.

My pets aren't allowed in the bedroom, and maybe I'm a nympho but my husband can have access to me any old time he wants. We joke around that me coming to bed naked is code for "not tonight, dear" because I usually wear something a little more interesting, which I then take off afterwards when turning off the lights.

I always know when my period is coming, through charting of my bbt, so that's never a surprise, just a hassle.

The spider thing is disturbing if you think about it, but no more disturbing than then crawling into your mouth and nose while you sleep, regardless of what you're wearing. So let's just not think about bed spiders!

My body kind of decided this issue without me a long time ago, because whatever I tried to wear to bed, I would pull it off in my sleep. And I chill very easily, but my lovely, soft sheets and blankets offset that very well.

Craig Hartranft from Southeastern Pennsylvania on July 26, 2012:

I love that cool breeze on a cool summer night ... although we haven't many of those this summer in Pennsylvania ...

Bea Toome from Undisclosed on July 08, 2012:

I don't sleep naked and yet still I'm going to sleep in fear because of your words. Swallow spiders?!?

birthdaysuited on November 15, 2011:

Did you know that sleeping nude not only improves circulation, it helps you avoid colds and nude sleepers live longer.

What are you waiting for/

Veronica Roberts from Ohio, USA on November 12, 2011:

Haha I love this hub! I, too, have thought about some of your reasons for not sleeping naked. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one! (& I've most definitely thought about the spider one... creeeepy!)

Stephanie Henkel from USA on October 22, 2011:

All valid reasons for not sleeping naked, and very funny, too! You have a great sense of humor! Voted up and funny and interesting! Maybe useful, too, for those who need to reevaluate their sleeping style...

Stephanie Das from Miami, US on October 20, 2011:

Great hub, I wish it had more comments. I share all of these reasons with you, except for the kids bit. When I lived with my parents, I slept naked and got walked in on a few times. That was embarrassing! Now I just worry that I'll need to get up quickly, and I'll have to waste time finding clothes or flee the house commando. Voted up, and funny!

Tracy B (author) from Canada on September 03, 2011:

Haha thanks for the kind words. And a good laugh.

Pintoman on September 02, 2011:

Thanks for the look into your mind, you have a funny one, if you get my drift. Some of those could work to my advantage, burglars break in and see a 6'2" nude, cranky, ugly old guy about to brain them with a bat, I think they would leave, one way or another.
