Where Were You When I Had COVID explores the dynamics of a personal relationship made much worse by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Rivita’s soulful, expressive voice moves with delicate guitar notes floating out explores the dynamics of a personal situation made much worse by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Rivita’s smoky and engaging voice fully expresses the pain in the words. The guitar adds its equally expressive sound moving out into the airy background. There’s a subtle but emotive feeling to the guitars as they back the mixture of loss, pain and anger in the lyrics.
Rivita begins by addressing the other person in the relationship who said that “kisses they taste sweet and you’d love me till the end of time.” Instead she found that she was “blind.”
While she was “sick and in pain, like I was losing my brain” and wracked with COVID, the other person didn’t come around to help her. She asks bitterly, “Where were you when I had COVID? Were you also isolated? Were you in quarantine?” She asks if they were not and are not losing time.
Love has now “dried up like autumn leaves” with all of the unfulfilled promises. Rivita concludes that “maybe it was for the best I had to take care of myself.”
