In 1976, he acted in the Mrinal Sen directed film 'Mrigaya' and won the National Award for Best Actor. Later, he became known as a popular artist with the film 'Do Anjaane', 'Ful Khile Hai Gulshan Gulshan'. The films 'Suraksha', 'Hum Paanch' and 'Wardat' were very popular. But the most popular among the youth of the time was the movie 'Disco Dancer' which became very popular both in terms of music and dance.

Many films like 'Kasam Pada Karnevaloki', 'Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye', Pyaar Jhukta Nahi ',' Swarg Se Sundar ',' Pyaar Ka Mandir 'were also commercially successful.
