The film shows the current status of education in America, and how American students are performing compared to their counterparts in Asia and Europe. Though the United States is perceived as a global power and a highly industrialized country still one of its pitfalls is its education system. Not only does it struggle with inequality of opportunities due to differences in race or skin color. Inequalities are also manifested in education, with the way children are prepared, and the widening gap between rich and poor children. Everything is part of the big challenge to transform the system. NOVA referred to as the School of the Future is designed to explore the different aspects of the science of learning and technological innovations to create a new vision of education for all. Likewise, teachers, students, parents, and even scientists are engaged to participate in the transformation.
What is the School of the Future like?
The school of the future utilizes recent research to redesign education, particularly with the help of insights into how the brain works. Neuroscience revealed stress, sleep, mindset, and emotions are factors affecting learning. Technology also influences the engagement and inspiration of the students. With the NOVA program, the commitment to education and reaching out to American students is strengthened.
'School of the future does not imply that the schools envisioned are filled with the newest gadgets or computers. It is different from the techno-filled interpretation in commercial films that would create an image of students riding hoverboards or using flying objects like iPads, phones, or computers. The idea of the school of the future focus on the emerging individualized and innovative learning experience and creating a more interactive learning environment that will help in developing the full potential of the students.
Features of the School of the Future
Exploration of the way brains are learning even at an early age is the key to pedagogy. Neuroscience showed through research that brain structure correlates to socioeconomic status. The intervention given through an enhanced literacy program has an impact on the development of the brain of the child. This is supported by the growing mindset theory that was being tested by psychologists. The belief of students in their own abilities to learn and improve can predict their achievement that is why giving rewards when students try to solve difficult problems until they succeed works as a strategy. Attitude and effort are also of equal importance in developing cognitive abilities. Emotional engagement is significant too. Students coming from troubled neighborhoods are more likely to be emotionally engaged on certain topics especially the ones which highlight the responses to basic survival.
Tapping on the emotional level of the students such as doing the hands-on project and tangible outcomes in Geometry and Science classes gets the students engaged too in solving problems. In the school of the future, it is important to focus on the development and teaching of the child as a whole. Where it is not only the academics that are being taught but there should also be emotional and social support that will make all of their experiences significant. It is also about equipping the students with 21st-century skills that will make them relevant in the demanding culture of the workforce.
Gender should not be a hindrance or another factor for the gap in educating students. There must be equal opportunities for both males and females, particularly in science and engineering. And in eliminating the gap in education, the social identity, stereotypes, and language barriers must also be taken off. Educating the child means getting rid of isolation and instead fosters a sense of belonging. Integrating digital technology to create a personalized learning environment must promote individualized or independent learning in a way that students get the chance to go deeper into subjects they feel most interested in. Long-term memory retention is also a big factor in the school of the future. Prompts that lead to the active retrieval process mean there is a robust idea kept in the memory of the students that replaces the highlighting and re-reading of notes in the traditional school (PBS, 2016).
