My Love of Hey Arnold

I used to watch this show every evening in reruns on YTV, it would usually air around the supper hour. When I discovered Animation as a career, I came across the box set of this show for 10 dollars, and instantly picked it up. Watching it now, with a new perspective on it, there is a simplicity to the entire series that makes it fantastic, and the character, Arnold who just wants to help people, and always has a positive solution. Everything about this cartoon is just so well done.

Another part of the fascinating dynamic in this cartoon is Helga, and her endless infatuation with Arnold, but she is only infatuated with him secretly, in the public she continues to berate him and refer to him as 'football head'. Helga definitely is a highlight of the show, and certainly one of the more entertaining aspects, as she has her friend Phoebe, who is the complete opposite of Helga.

Some of the best pairings on television or on film are ones who do not always agree, but they have enough in common that the friendship or partnership stands the test of time. Certainly Arnold and Gerald is one of those relationships, there are episodes where they disagree on things, but ultimately they remain friends. One of my favorite moments between them is when Gerald asks Arnold why he always looks on the bright side of things, and Arnold simply responds; "Somebody has to."

The Grandparents

A major favorite aspect of this cartoon for me is the Grandparents of Arnold, his Grandpa is always there as a guiding voice, giving him wisdom, sometimes he kind of trails off into his own stories, which is always hilarious. Then you have the Grandmother who is apparently a Ninja, and can do anything needed, and usually helps Arnold defend himself, or is playing some kind of instrument, in one episode she is basically acting like Tarzan which is hilarious. Once again, every element of this cartoon is so well thought out, and adds value.

Positive Message

The one thing that stands out from this cartoon, as opposed to others like it, Hey Arnold always ends on an absolute positive note, and that is something that is needed more on television, to give people a sense of hope and that things will always improve. Arnold is a good character, he cares about others, he helps people, its something most shows don't care to portray, but Craig Bartlett absolutely made a fantastic cartoon, and its a show I love, and watch fairly regularly.

Hey Arnold Boxset

Box Set

The box set is a lot of fun for anyone who remembers this cartoon, and who loves the classics. It has the original unaired Stop-Motion Animation Pilot, and includes the Jungle Movie, which was the most recent conclusion to the Arnold story of him finding his parents.
