So yeah, this is my second impression while I was 14 episodes in when I started writing this. This season has been a roller coaster these past 14 episodes with a slow build up, before pummeling on that steep drop that leaves some screaming and others praying to whatever God they believe in. In other words, so far so good. Now on to the summary.
For starters I had mentioned in my first impression how we hadn’t seen Eren yet, and was interested in how he tied into all of this. What I missed was that there was a man in a black suit and top hat, that looked like Jean. This implied that Eren and the Survey had infiltrated Marley. Why? Let’s get into that.
Episode 2 had Zeke continuing his pursuit of conquering Eren’s home, Paradise Island. Reiner meanwhile was still traumatized by his last battle on Paradise Island, yet still decided to return to complete his mission of acquiring the Founding Titan. Prior to Reiner’s resolve, he reminisced on how he got to Paradise Island with Annie and Bertholdt. It’s here that we saw that Reiner in his younger days was a lot like Eren:”Brash, confident, and head strong.” Which explained why he got along well with Eren when they met in the survey corp. training.
That aside, we learned that Reiner is cousins with Gabi who’s one of the candidates to inherit his Armored Titan abilities. And afterwards Reiner and family got set for a rally held by Wily Tyber, who’s set to help Zeke with his plans to acquire the Founding Titan. Joke was on Tyber, as Eren was lying in wait to draw out the WarHammer Titan, to consume it. Eren erupted from the basement below the stage Tyber was on, before he started attacking everything in sight to draw out the WarHammer Titan.
Seizing their chance, Poco, the current Jaws Titan, and Wily’s sister revealed to be the WarHammer Titan, attacked Eren. Unfortunately for them, Mikasa, Jean, Sasha, and the rest of the Scout Regimen came out of hiding to help Eren achieve his goal. Amidst their conflict many Marleyans and Eldians were killed by environmental damage. This enraged Gabi, as she set her sights on Eren and his team. But not before Reiner and Eren had a rematch, which occurred after Eren managed to kill Wily Tyber’s sister, and acquire her WarHammer Titan abilities.
Reiner emerged with a new look to his Armored Titan, but his fight with Eren is short, since Eren was running low on steam. And yet Eren managed to beat Reiner by attacking Reiner before his transformation was complete. With their mission completed and Zeke captured after losing a fight against Levi, Eren and crew retreated. Unbeknownst to them, Gabi and Falco were hot on their heels, as Gabi was out for blood. After boarding the blimp Eren and crew escaped on, Gabi shot and killed Sasha, before she and Falco were taken prisoner.
From there, as a cruel twist of fate, Gabi and Falco found themselves as guests of Sasha’s family after escaping the Survey Corp’s custody. It’s through this that Gabi’s true colors blossomed as she railed against Sasha’s sister Kaya for the sins of her ancestors, before Falco diffused the situation.
Aside from that, Yelena and Onyankopon explained to Hange and Levi that Zeke’s plan is to acquire the founding titan, while they sought to liberate Eldians from Marely. This happened prior to the survey corp invasion on Marely, as with Yelena and Onyankapon's help the Survey Corp upgraded their tech and gear as preparation for their invasion.
Afterwards we learn that the Rumbling is a last resort to defend Paradise Island. It’s activated through the use of the founder’s power. But it can only be used by an Eldian of royal blood. Speaking of which, it was also revealed that Historia had gotten pregnant, as a result Eren and co. can’t risk having her inherit the beast titan as it might kill her unborn heir in the process.
But that was during a flashback, as in the present Eren is imprisoned for his invasion of Marely. This doesn’t last as Eren escaped, met up with his crew governed by Flock, before they set out to find Zeke. After that Gabi told Nicholo that she killed Sasha which enraged him as he tried to kill her. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Nicholo revealed that the wine he served to the Survey Corp contained Zeke’s spinal fluid as Falco had drank some during his meal with Sasha’s family.
This is followed by Flock and Eren detaining Nicholo’s restaurant as Flock confirmed that Zeke did spike the wine with his spinal fluid. Eren meanwhile sat down with Mikasa and Armin only to break ties with him. Elsewhere Zeke was held captive by Levi, before he escaped, and was tracked down. After Levi recaptured Zeke he proceeded to cut off his arms and legs to prevent Zeke from transforming.
And while that may work for some people, others may not enjoy the slow pacing. Especially since it entails characters typically standing and talking. Most people tend to tune that out after the intense action scenes.
But this had me wondering how this part of season 4 would end. Of which I’ll go over that in my final review, so stay tuned.
