This movie had heart behind its production. That was obvious from the very opening. Immediately, the score sweeps you off your feet, setting the tone in an elegant and beautiful manner. Credited for the score is Amelia Warner and Emily Rice who don’t have a whole lot of recognizable pieces between the two of them in the past, but certainly could easily have made a true name for themselves with their combined efforts in Mr. Malcolm’s List. Not just once, or twice, but three times throughout the film, I was swept away by the score alone.
The costume design felt a bit uninspired for a period piece. Usually, the costume design for these types of films go all out and spectacular, so that was a bit of a disappointment. On the contrary, the sound design was absolutely astounding. The attention to detail with the sound effects of running water, birds faintly chirping, and even the sound of the wind picking up added so much to the immersion for this movie.
Frieda Pinto and Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù have an incredible on-screen chemistry with one another, making this film extremely fun to become engulfed in. Their performances made this movie what it was, and should not go without recognition. Zawe Ashton plays an extremely unlikable character, and at first, I could not tell if I was supposed to dislike the character, or if I simply did not like Zawe Ashton’s performance. I finally settled on the conclusion that she played her part so well, that the distaste I had for her seeped into her acting talents. This feels similar to how people felt about Jack Gleeson after his role as King Joffrey Baratheon. However, because of this, I feel that instead of criticism, she deserves the utmost praise for her acting; but I feel that I will want some time away from her before I can truly appreciate her next work.
Pieces of the movie felt as though they did not need to be included to tell a coherent story, but I never felt as though the movie took too long, or that it was ever rushed. While the ending was entirely predictable, that is to be expected from a movie of this nature, and is exactly what you would want.
