Meet BTS, the Seven Kings of Pop

What matters most in the world of entertainment is the impact it brings to the audience, and the power it holds to spread that impact.

Introduction

It’s not a mistake that I am referring to BTS as the Seven Kings of Pop instead of K-Pop. They are not only popular in Korea, but around the world. They have become a global phenomenon, so these world-class performers who are highly influential, and highly accomplished music artists are the Kings of Pop.

BTS is a seven-member South Korean boy band who debuted on June 12, 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, which has now re-branded itself to HYBE. Their band name stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean, which literally means Bulletproof Boy Scouts in English. On an interview, JHope explained that their name signifies the group’s desire to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents as bullets.

The band formation started in 2010 with RM as its first member and leader of the group, which was originally supposed to be a hip-hop group. However, CEO Bang Si-hyuk decided to form an idol instead, with the intention of carrying and sharing their mission statement, ‘Music & Artists for Healing.’ Since the company has just re-branded itself this year and is now called HYBE, their new mission statement is ‘We Believe in Music.’

What I Love About BTS

Aside from the fact that their music and performances are top tier, to the point of healing broken souls like mine, there are too many other things that I love about BTS. I love that each member is different from the others. Their different personalities, talents and expertise, voice quality, quirks, charms, and looks, make it difficult to get sick and tired of watching them. It is fascinating how much they love each other, despite their differences. I also love that they don’t only show their good sides, they also show their flaws just like any ordinary human, which makes them so relatable.

Here’s some basic info about each BTS member, and why I love them:

1. RM

RM, formerly known as Rap Monster, was born as Kim Nam-joon on September 12, 1994 in Dongjak-gu, South Korea, and grew up in Ilsan-gu with his siblings. He is a rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Before he joined Big Hit Entertainment, he was an active rapper in the underground Korean hip-hop scene. In 2015, he released his debut mixtape entitled RM.

As the first member to join BTS, he is the leader and spokesperson of the group, and the only member who can speak English fluently. On some interviews, he revealed that he learned English by watching the TV Sitcom, Friends when he was young. He is also mostly referred to as the “God of Destruction” because he’s always unintentionally breaking things.

What I love the most about RM is his great passion in writing. I am always mesmerized at the way that he expresses his thoughts through his poetic lyrics and genius word-play. Examples would be his lyrics in 134340 when he said, ’Us’ is just a plural of ‘U,’ and in the song, Am I Wrong, he said, ‘A fish lives in all our hearts. Its name is selfish, selfish.’

Another reason why I love RM is that he’s always honest about how he feels. On episode 141 of BTS Run, there was a game where each BTS member was asked about one flaw and they used that as their tag line when answering a quiz. RM expressed that he’s not matured enough, that he can’t drive, he can’t cook well, and even if he tries, he screws up. He further said that he lacks the vitality that you need in life and that makes him immature. For a leader, one that has the greatest responsibility amongst the BTS members, admitting that he’s not matured enough is a big thing. He doesn’t pretend to be perfect just so he could be referred to as a great leader. In fact, he always gets flustered when the members tell him how great he is.

I love his flaws as much as I love his abilities. Whenever he lives up to his reputation as the ‘God of Destruction’ by being clumsy and accidently breaking things, it’s very amusing that it has become a form of entertainment for ARMYs. I mean, not that I want him to keep breaking things, but I don’t mind if he can’t control his energy because that’s just how he is.

2. Jin

Jin is a songwriter and one of the vocalists of BTS. He’s also the oldest member. He was born as Kim Seok-jin on December 4, 1992 in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He was scouted by SM Entertainment when he was in junior high school, but he rejected it. Originally wanting to be an actor, he attended Konkuk University and graduated with a degree in art and acting in 2017.

Without a background in music, he was scouted by Big Hit Entertainment for his looks while he was walking down the street. He is mostly referred to as ‘Worldwide Handsome,’ a fact that even science has proven when he got the top winning spot for Best Sculpted Face in the World.

Just like ARMYs around the world, I am mesmerized by his handsome face, though there is so much more than his perfect golden ratio face that I love. His voice has a calming effect on me, so every time I’m having anxiety or panic attacks, I listen to his ballads. He is a great balladeer, and the quality and texture of his voice are very helpful, most especially during my worst times.

Aside from his voice, I admire his perception in life. On episode 141 of BTS run, he confessed his flaw saying, ‘I don’t think much,’ but then the members expressed that it’s actually an advantage, which I highly agree with. I love that he’s fun-loving and just lives in the moment instead of worrying about tomorrow or regretting yesterday. I want to be like him. Even the BTS members expressed that they want to achieve the kind of mentality that he has. Who wouldn’t? Not worrying is the most difficult thing to do because it seems that our mindset is always to think about the future. Hence, we always end up worrying.

I also love Jin’s dad jokes even though I don’t understand most of them. I think that what makes them funny aren’t the joke themselves, but the way that Jin laughs at his own jokes. Other things I love about him are his MC skills and shameless promotion of himself and BTS, which is often embarrassing for the other members. For me, he’s just really funny and dorky. He maybe the oldest, but he definitely acts like he’s the youngest. His members even refer to him as ‘the other youngest,’ which is so amusing.

3. Suga

Suga is a rapper, songwriter, and producer. He was born as Min Yoon-gi on March 9, 1993 in Daegu, South Korea. He originally joined the company as a music producer, but ended up joining BTS, thinking that he would rap and didn’t have to dance. Before he was signed by Big Hit Entertainment, he was active under the name, Gloss, as an underground rapper.

He is best known as the ‘grandpa’ and ‘savage’ member of BTS, and has an alter ego named Agust D, which is also the title of his first mixtape album. His second and latest solo mixtape is entitled D-2.

Suga is my ultimate bias from the rap line. Amongst the BTS members, he is the most that I can relate with because we share the same qualities. He has a tongue that could kill, not only because of his crazy speed in rapping, but also because of his savage lyrics. Just like him, I am very straightforward and at often times, offensive, but only when triggered.

Suga is referred to as the ‘grandpa’ of the group because he’s grumpy and physically weak. On episode 141 of BTS Run, he expressed his flaw as ‘physically weak and loses concentration easily’ which again, I can very much relate with, except my reason is old age (lol). The most that I can relate with when it comes to personality, is that he’s rarely and almost never affectionate. In fact, he cringes at sweet words or any act of affection. He does have very rare moments when he’s sweet towards the members, so I’m sure that the members cherish those moments the most.

I love all BTS albums and songs because they are all top tier, but if I were to choose between all their solo mixtapes, I would have to choose Agust D and D-2 as my ultimate favorite mixtapes. For me, Suga’s voice has the most swag, whether he’s speaking, rapping, or singing. Yes, I included singing. HE CAN SING. Don’t fight me.

Another thing that makes me love him the most from the rap line is his background. I think that he was the most that struggled way back because his family was not well off, and they didn’t support his dream to be a rapper. He even dislocated his shoulders during a motorcycle accident when he was working as a delivery boy to earn money. He didn’t report this to his managers at that time, because he was afraid to get fired. The rest of the members didn’t know as well. As a result of that incident that happened years ago when he was just a trainee, he had to undergo a surgery on November 3, 2020, and was away from the spotlight for more than two months. On January 9, 2021, he was finally back as the BTS group accepted their Bonsang Award for the Digital Song Division during the 35th Golden Disc Awards.

4. J-Hope

J-Hope is a rapper, songwriter, record producer, and BTS’ lead dancer. He was born as Jung Ho-seok on February 18, 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea where he lived with his parents and older sister. He was part of an underground dance team called Neuron, and took dance classes at Gwangju Music Academy for six years.

Like his co-rappers, RM and Suga aka Agust D, he also released a solo mixtape entitled Hope World which was released on March 1, 2018.

J-Hope’s name comes from his desire to represent hope for BTS and ARMY. He also earned the nickname, ‘Sunshine’ from ARMY because of his sunny personality; he’s always smiling and laughing.

His sunny personality is what I love the most. All the BTS members know how to enjoy themselves and laugh, but J-Hope has the most consistent and contagious laugh that truly shines. On episode 141 of BTS Run, when it was his turn to confess his main flaw, the members teased that he’s flawless. I don’t remember any of the members ever complaining about him and in fact, they always compliment him for his professional attitude and jolly personality. I remember that Suga referred to him as his medicine, and that he always calls for him when he’s running out of energy. J-Hope is indeed, an energy boost and I’m sure all ARMYS would agree to that. When it comes to performing, I think he has the most swag on stage. Whether he’s rapping, dancing, or singing, his stage presence is the strongest for me. And yes, HE CAN SING, too. Don’t fight me.

5. Jimin

Jimin is a songwriter, dancer, and part of the vocal line. He was born as Park Ji-min on October 13, 1995 in Geumjeong District, Busan, South Korea. He attended Just Dance Academy and learned popping and locking during his middle school. Before he became an idol trainee, he studied contemporary dance at Busan High School of Arts and was a top student in the modern dance department. He has many nicknames, one of which is ‘mochi,’ which became ‘baby mochi’ when television host, James Corden called him that during their carpool karaoke.

For me, Jimin is the prettiest boy I have ever seen in my entire life. He’s so pretty and cute that I’d want to protect him like a baby because he seems so fragile. He’s the smallest and shortest BTS member and I find it so adorable when they tease him about it. His personality as the petty, whiny, and sassy member are what I love the most. And when it comes to contemporary dancing, he just never fails to blow my mind. He is the most graceful dancer amongst the BTS members. I also love that he’s generous. I ‘ve seen lots of moments when the members would compliment him on his generosity. In fact, they all started giving each other gifts because Jimin gave them gifts.

6. V

V is a songwriter, dancer, actor, and part of the BTS vocal line. He was born as Kim Tae-hyung on December 30, 1995 in the Seo District of Daegu, South Korea. He took saxophone lessons during his early middle school with the thought of pursuing the career, then eventually became a trainee for Big Hit Entertainment after passing the audition. Though Jimin was the last member to join BTS, V was a ‘hidden member,’ the last member that Big Hit revealed as their ‘secret weapon.’

V is the most unpredictable BTS member and often referred to as the one with the 4D personality, which in K-Pop means an ‘out of this world personality.’ It’s a compliment, not an insult, and it’s one of the things that I love about him. He does things that normal people won’t do, and he strongly believes he has an angel guarding him.

Another thing that I love about him is his acting ability. I have watched Hwarang and he instantly captured my attention, though during that time I had no idea that he was an idol, or a BTS member, because I wasn’t a fan yet. I only became a fan in 2019.

He is my youngest daughter’s bias and she even calls herself Mrs. Tae-hyung, not knowing that it should be Mrs. Kim because that’s his surname. I didn’t correct my 10-year-old kid because if she refers to herself as Mrs. Kim, then it could be mistaken as Kim Nam-joon, or Kim Seok-jin,

7. Jungkook

Jungkook is a songwriter, dancer, and the main vocalist of BTS. He is also the youngest member. He was born as Jeon Jung-kook on September 1, 1997 in Busan, South Korea. He auditioned for the South Korean talent show called Superstar K and though he was not selected, he received a lot of casting offers from entertainment companies. When he saw RM perform, he got so impressed and that led him to join Big Hit Entertainment. Prior to BTS’ debut, he went to Los Angeles in 2012 to receive dance training from Movement Lifestyle.

He is mostly referred to as the ‘golden maknae’ because he’s good at everything he does. Golden means super talented, and ‘maknae’ means youngest sibling. He can rap, sing, dance, cook, and he’s very athletic.

Jungkook is my ultimate bias from the vocal line and he is the first reason I discovered BTS. Back then, I didn’t know any of the other members, but I was fascinated at Jungkook’s facial expressions, angelic voice, and sexy stage presence. I also found him too adorable because he’s the youngest, and the older BTS members seem to smother him with love.

Ironically, even if he’s the youngest and most loved one, they’re also scared of him because he tends to be very physical when he’s fooling around. He loves boxing, so sometimes he would punch the older members playfully. Though he is the manliest BTS member because of his strength and muscles, the thing that I admire about him the most is his sensitive side. He doesn’t complain much and he’s not a cry-baby, but he has a soft side for the older members, as well as the ARMYs. In fact, the only time that he struggles is when his hyungs (older BTS members) are having a hard time.
