Everyone who watched the finale of Married at First Sight on September 11 agrees that it had the most shocking decision in the history of the show after nine seasons. The expressions on the experts' face showed their surprise. People commented on social media that they were stunned.
There have been surprises on Decision Day before, but there has been nothing like the news that was revealed when Keith Manley gave his decision to get a divorce from Iris Caldwell who had already given her decision to stay married.
It was so shocking because the couple had gotten along well all season. They both spoke highly of each other. Viewers never saw them argue or fight like many of the other three couples. Keith praised Iris for being there for him especially when his grandmother died. He said, "Right now, I do think that we are in different places individually and for that reason, I would like to get a divorce."
Even though Keith complimented Iris, he told her he based his decision on her lack of experience because she had not had many relationships before she married him.
The experts and viewers waited to hear what else Keith had to say. He added, "I think you're an amazing person. I think you're an amazing woman but I'm just not sure you're the right one for me."
Reactions to the Decision
Needless to say, Iris was hurt. She shed tears because like everyone else, she was caught off guard. Even though Iris cried when she first heard the news, she was better when all the couples reunited at the end of the show. She wasn't bitter with Keith. She said they would remain friends.
Sociologist and sexologist Dr. Pepper Schwartz said she was "stunned." She started tearing up after hearing Keith's decision. This was Dr. Viviana Coles' first season on the show in the position of relationship and sex expert. She said her heart was "broken for Iris." She whispered some encouraging words to Iris when they hugged at the end of the segment. Pastor Calvin Roberson didn't need to say anything because his face said it all after hearing what Keith said.
There was almost another shocker while Amber Bowles was commenting about her cheating husband. She started off as if she was going to say she wanted to stay married. The experts looked at each other because it did seem like she was leaning that way, but she finally said she wanted a divorce. Matt agreed to the divorce and the experts breathed a sigh of relief and so did viewers.
Matt has stayed out all night and cheated on Amber more than once. Amber found out he had spent time with a woman at a bar and left with her the night before Decision Day.
After Amber and Matt left the room, Dr. Pepper said she was glad they decided to divorce. She criticized Matt for not honoring the marriage and for disrespecting Amber.
Surprisingly, Elizabeth Bice and Jamie Thompson agreed to stay married. They had gone through several volatile encounters. They called each other negative names. Once Elizabeth flipped over a coffee table and things went flying to the floor. Even so, Beth said she wanted to stay married.
When it was Jamie's time to speak, he said he found fault with their sexual relationship. He said a lot before giving his decision. Fans, the experts and even Beth didn't know what his decision would be. He finally said, "I just think there's just too much good, too much positivity, too much to throw away so my answer is yes, I want to stay married."
Many viewers expected them to divorce. We will find out next Wednesday night if they are still together.
Deonna McNeill and Gregory Okotie were the first to give their decisions. Even though it had been ten years since Deonna had been in a relationship, she and Greg didn't let that stand in their way of making their marriage work.
Deonna said she was "growing in love" with her husband. She said, "This kind of feels like a fairy-tale. I got married at first sight to find my forever relationship, to find my complementing partner, go on adventures, go grocery shopping, go home and have someone to talk to. With Greg, I have all of that." Greg also agreed to stay married.
Decisions Could Change
It has been two months since Decision Day. It is customary for the couple to appear on a reunion show to bring viewers up to date on the status of their marriage since they made their initial decision. The reunion show will air on Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
It will not be unusual for couples to have changed their mind. Those who said they would divorce might agree to stay married after all. Those who said they would stay married might have decided to divorce. It will be interesting to find out if the decisions are the same as they were on Decision Day.
Some people believe Keith and Iris will reconcile and remain married. They bonded too much during the eight weeks to just call it off. In the preview for the upcoming show, Iris is heard saying she wanted Keith to be the first one to be intimate with her even though that didn't happen during their eight-week marriage.
Find out more information about all the couples when Kevin Frazier hosts the reunion show.
