Actress, director, and philanthropist Mariska Magdolna Hargitay has reached several notable milestones that are worth sharing and should be an inspiration to women everywhere. She was born on January 23, 1964, and just celebrated her 58th birthday. Hargitay is the daughter of Hollywood royalty as her parents were Hungarian bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay and blonde bombshell actress Jayne Mansfield. Mariska's parents were in four movies together before her mom died as the result of a car crash in June 1967 at age of 34. Her father lived until age 80 and passed away in 2006. from multiple myeloma (bone cancer). Mariska is still acting at an age where women usually find it difficult to obtain roles so in addition to her birthday she can celebrate the fact that her career is still going strong and she continues to be healthy enough to work. Hargitay, who has won both a Golden Globe Award and a Prime Time Emmy, among other awards made her film debut in the 1985 movie Ghoulies. She has said that she did not consider acting prior to being given this role and she has been going strong for 37 years with her major television debut coming in the 1986 series Downtown.

Law and Order SVU

During the 1980s and 1990s, Masriska appeared in numerous television roles which include: In the Heat of the Night, Falcon Crest, Baywatch, Wiseguy, Thirtysomething, Booker, Hotel Room, Gabriel's Fire, Key West, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire. and Law and Order. She was also in the television movies Finishline, Blindside, The Advocate's Devil, and Gambler V Playing For Keeps.

Hargitay's shining moment came when in 1999 she joined the cast of the NBC police drama Law and Order Special Victim's Unit for which she has received much acclaim. Her life has imitated art as she is the founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which provides support to those who have been sexually abused. As Captain Olivia "Liv" Margaret Benson the actress is the commanding officer of the Manhattan Special Victim's Unit. Prior to taking over SVU, Liv worked as an SVU detective, then a sergeant. Olivia was almost raped while undercover in prison and was beaten and about to be sexually assaulted by a suspect. Her work in SVU has caused her to receive many letters of survivors of sexual abuse and this is why she decided to set up her foundation to help them.

As of season 23, Benson has been credited in 505 episodes of SVU and with the premiere of season 21, Olivia became the longest-running prime-time live-action character of all time, surpassing the record held by Gunsmoke's Marshall Dillon (James Arnaz) and Frazier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) from Cheers and Fraizer.

Mariska's personal life

Hargitay did not initially desire to be an actress because people kept comparing her looks to those of her late mother. Her first and middle names are Hungarian for Mary Magdaline with Mariska is a diminutive of Mary and Magdolna for Magfoline.. The actress is a Christian who was raised Catholic and has two older brothers, Miklós and Zoltán, and three half-siblings, Jane Marie Mansfield and Antonio "Tony" Cimber from her mother's first and third marriages and Tina Hargitay from her father's first marriage. She speaks five languages, English, Hungarian, French, Italian, and Spanish. On August 28, 2004 the actress Hargitay married fellow actor Peter Hermann whom she met on the set of Law & Order: SVU and who has the recurring role of defense attorney Trevor Langan. Mariska gave birth to their first child, August Miklos Friedrich Hermann, a son on June 28, 2006, via cesarean section The couple adopted a baby girl Amaya in April 2011 and were in attendance during her birth. Six months later in October 2011, the couple adopted a baby boy, Andrew, who had been born earlier in the year. In January 2007 Hargitay and her son, August, appeared together in a Got Mik? advertisement.
