Mariah Carey was just 24 when she wrote All I Want for Christmas Is You in just one hour. Columbia Records released it on October 29, 1994. It was a single on her first holiday album, Merry Christmas. The song has sold over 16 million copies globally. For the first time in 25 years, the Christmas classic reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was previously No. 3 on the chart.
This is Carey's 19th No. 1 hit. The Beatles have had 20 No. 1 hits, and Carey is getting closer to their record. All I Want for Christmas Is You is the first Christmas song to reach No. 1 in the United States since The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) reached the top of the chart in 1958.
Because of the popularity of the Christmas song, it is hard to believe it took so long for it to reach the top of the chart Billboard Hot 100 chart.
When All I Want for Christmas Is You was first released in 1994, it reached No. 2 and maintained that spot for three weeks. Because of downloads and streams, it reached No. 4 in 2008. It made its way back up to No. 2 for each of the last two years.
Carey performs her song to officially kick off her holiday every year right after Halloween. Every year since 2014, she has performed a concert in honor of the classic song. About 50 other artists, including Michael Bublé, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, and CeeLo Green have recorded the Carey's Christmas song. The song is popular on major Christmas playlists. Also, it is featured in the movie Love Actually which was released in 2003. Carey has reportedly earned more than $60 million in royalties from that one song, according to The Economist.
The song has very few lyrics that are catchy. People love hearing Mariah's five-octave vocal range voice. She can also sing notes higher than the 7th octave that most singers cannot do. Her music video has been seen on YouTube over 600 million times and the number is still increasing.
Since the news came out that the Christmas classic has finally reached the top, it has become the most-streamed song in the US with more than 45 million listeners. That's up from 35 million the week before the announcement of the top ranking.
Nielsen reports that the sales of Carey's song have increased from 12.6 million copies in 2014 to 61 million copies in 2016, and to 185 million copies in 2018. That shows the sales go up significantly about every two years.
Popularity of the Song
This year, Carey released a new version of the music video and two pre-existing videos. All those things helped her song reach No. 1 on the chart. She published a children’s book and released an animated film based on the popular Christmas song. She has also used the song as the basis for her Christmas-themed tours in recent years.
Carey's Reaction to the Honor
Mariah calls herself the Queen of Christmas because she loves the holiday so much. She goes all out for her family that includes her twins.
Carey is honored to finally have her Christmas classic at the top of the chart after such a long time. She acknowledged that her fans are excited about the ranking. She added, "But I don’t need something else to validate the existence of this song. I used to pick it apart whenever I listened to it, but at this point, I feel like I’m finally able to enjoy it.”

Great chord progressions and key changes in that song. Delicious.

Hi Tim, Keep dancing and enjoy the upcoming holidays.
Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on December 23, 2019:
Hi, Margaret, I have to smile. I can't remember half the words in Carey's song, but the happiness and good mood is contagious. I dance and clap along with the only lyric I can sing: All I want for Christmas is You. My wife likes it too. Good for Mariah, a true American power voice. Merry Christmas to you.
