Lum Urusei Yatsura returns in 2022
Introduction...
After 35 years Lum Urusei Yatsura is getting a rebooted anime this year of 2022. This is unexpected for me, as was unaware it was popular enough to warrant such a thing. And while no release date is announced, there are somethings we do know. What we do know so far is the animation studio behind it, and the cast. So let’s get into that.
The Premise and what we know so far...
What we know so far is that the studio the animation will be published by is David Production who also did the first five parts of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and the first two seasons of Fire Force, with Hideya Takahashi, and Yasuhiro Kimora as directors. It’ll have Yuuko Kakihara writing the scripts. And So far reports on the casting consist of Sumire Uesaka as Lum, and Hiroshi Kamiya as Ataru Moroboshi.
It’s also been announce that this reboot will air in the Noitamina programming block on Fuji TV and other channels in 2022.
Lum Urusei Yatsura’s premise deals with Ataru Moroboshi who finds himself engaged in a game of tag with an invading alien princess named “Lum.” If he wins, they get married, if he lost, Lum’s race of “one” aliens would conquer the Earth. Atari wins this game, which results in Lum proposing to him ensuing in a number of comedic hijinx throughout the series.
The Conclusion...
While I haven’t finished the original Urusei Yatsura anime, or read the manga, I’m surprised and somewhat hyped for this reboot. Fingers crossed that David Productions can put out another classic, but after Jojo and Fire Force, I’m confident in them at this point.
I'll also be keeping an eye out for more information as we get closer to the release date.
