Love Songs With The Word "Crazy"| Who Wrote The Song "Crazy"?

Crazy, crazy love songs

Crazy, crazy love songs

Some of the greatest love songs written have the word 'crazy' in the lyrics. I think many of us at one time or another have experienced 'crazy' love. Is love crazy, or does yearning it make us crazy, or losing it, or does being in love make us crazy? Apparently poets and songwriters alike have realized the appeal of love's most mysterious element, even scientists have researched the phenomenon of 'crazy' love. Come along with me while we discover more about some of these crazy little love songs.

Crazy By Patsy Cline

Who Wrote The Song, 'Crazy'?

One of my very favorites is "Crazy", which was written by Willie Nelson while he was in his struggling songwriting days. He originally wrote it and presented it to Larry Butler, a country western singer. Perhaps it was Butler's refusal of this song that ended up making it Paty Cline's number one hit. After Butler refused the offer, Nelson presented it to Cline. At first she wasn't 'crazy' about it, but with the encouragement of her husband and producer, Owen Bradley, she recorded it. And we're fortunate she did!

It remains to this day one of the top five songs played on jukeboxes in the United States. (It was one of my mother's favorite songs.) Diana Krall also covered it as a tribute to Cline on the Remembering Patsy Cline album. When it was released in 1961, it turned into a crossover hit, making both the country and pop music charts. She received three standing ovations when she performed it at the Grand Ole Oprey. Cline had the perfect voice for the complex melody, which makes the song so memorable. Listen to 'Crazy' and fall in love all over again.

Crazy Love- Van Morrison

Van Morrison penned 'Crazy Love' in 1970 after his marriage to Janet Planet. It's a poetic, beautiful song that is often played at weddings. Many other artists have covered this song due to it's universal appeal and lyrical beauty.

It has been sung by some of the best, Brain McKnight, Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, Michael Bouble', among others. Anytime Ray Charles picks up one of your songs, you know it's a classic and destined to be one of the top 'crazy love' songs.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen

Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen

Freddy Mercury, of Queen, wrote 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' while lounging in a bubble bath in Munich, Germany while on tour. Once out of the bath, he wrapped himself in a towel and asked one of his bandmates for a guitar and worked on the chords. Now you have a bit of music trivia to share with your friend or partner the next time you hear one of the best crazy big love songs ever written. He sounds a bit like Elvis in this song, which was a departure from their regular sound. It shows the genius and musical versatility that was Freddy Mercury. It was their first US hit and made it to #2 on the UK charts. 'ready Freddy?'

Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen

Crazy For You- Madonna

Crazy For You- Madonna

Madonna sang the song 'Crazy For You' for the film, Vision Quest, which in some European countries was later titled, Crazy For You, to capitalize on Madonna's fame. The song is a love ballad which she performs in the movie, playing a singer at a nightclub. John Bettis, a lyricist, and Jon Lind, songwriter/musician, wrote the song after they read the script for the movie.

Although it almost wasn't included in the film, it was rearranged by composer, Rob Mounsey, and Bettis and Lind were thrilled with the changes. It was one of Madonna's most sophisticated, love ballads.

Crazy For You- Madonna

Crazy- Aerosmith

Crazy- Aerosmith

Aerosmith, with it's frontman, Steven Tyler, come next with their 1993 release of 'Crazy'. It was written by Tyler, Joe Perry and Desmond Child. The song is a power love ballad which Tyler does so well. The song won a Grammy in 1994 for Best Performance By a Duo or Group With Vocal. "I'm losing my mind cuz I'm going crazyyyyy." The video was a top hit on MTV and features Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone. I didn't count how many times Tyler belts out the word 'crazy', but you might feel a little crazy after you hear the song. It's the power ballad 80's and this was one of the best.

Crazy- Aerosmith

Crush- Dave Matthews Band

Crush- Dave Matthews Band

1998 brought one of the best Dave Matthew's songs to a global audience. All of their songs are amazing, but 'Crush' is possibly the most intensely romantic love song I've ever heard. Matthews wrote the song for his wife as a testament to her powerful presence in his life. If I ever have a man write those kind of lyrics for me, I will be forever putty in his hands. (A bit of drama.) It's really difficult to beat anything that Matthews pens. He also has an acoustic version of this song that he performs with his lead guitarist, Tim Reynolds. It is equally a beautiful love song. "Crazy how you make it all all right love."

Crazy In Love- Beyonce

Crazy In Love- Beyonce

There are performers that come around in our lifetimes that simply blow their competition into the dust and Beyonce is one of those performers. Like her or not, she is a brilliant, talented, powerful performer. 'Crazy In Love' with Jay Z is one of those love songs that gets you up on your feet. It has been used in numerous soundtracks including Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, White Chicks and Taxi. If you've ever seen Bridget Jones, it makes perfect sense that this song, ' Crazy in Love', is part of the official soundtrack. Rick Harrison, Knowles and Jay Z wrote this song about a woman in love who does things that women in love do, sometimes we get a little crazy.

CJ Baker from Parts Unknown on March 01, 2014:

I agree it is not really a love song, so it doesn't really belong on this list, but I do love "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. Ray Lamontagne also does an emotionally powerful cover of Gnarls Barkly's "Crazy". Once again, not a love song, but thought it deserved a mention. Great list and an enjoyable read.

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on June 05, 2013:

Thanks Sherry. I also love the song, Crazy. Whenever I hear the first few notes, I enter a special place in my heart. No matter who sings it, it has this incredible, transcending effect on the listener. I heard it just the other night on The Voice. The singer did a magnificent job. I smiled during the entire performance.

I'm glad you enjoyed the hub about crazy love songs.

Sherry Hewins from Sierra Foothills, CA on June 05, 2013:

I love the song "Crazy," I love Willie Nelson's own rendition of it. I also love Willie singing "I'd Have to Be Crazy" (written by Steven Fromholz).

This is a fun hub with lots of great songs.

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 13, 2013:

I added a few more love songs with the word crazy in the lyrics. Thanks for the suggestions. Enjoy the Madness video! LOVE, this crazy love.

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 12, 2013:

Ahh, yes, now I know what you're talking about. That's such a fun song! I'll add it to my list for updates. Thanks for leaving these comments, I appreciate it! I think we're all a bit crazy, some more so than others. :}}

George Greene Jr. from California PA on April 12, 2013:

I have the title right.. wrong band!!! it's Fine Young Cannibals I was thinking of!

Madness is also a band!

if you wanted you could go with Belinda Carlisle's "Mad About You"(if you wanted to expand from just crazy!) But then again I'm Madly Crazy myself!

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 11, 2013:

I love Madness! I love British bands, and this has to be one of their best songs. Bellamy wrote it after a fight with his girlfriend, and said it was probably his favorite Muse song. Rolling Stone has it as one of their top 50 songs of 2012. It definitely is one of those songs that 'swallow you whole.' Whenever I hear it, I turn it up. The music is amazing. And who doesn't love his vocals??

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 11, 2013:

I love Madness! I love British bands, and this has to be one of their best songs. Chris Martin said it was their best song. Rolling Stone has it as one of the 50 best songs of 2012. It definitely is one of those songs that 'swallow you whole'. Whenever I hear it, I turn it up.

Silva Hayes from Spicewood, Texas on April 11, 2013:

Then there's "Madness," (Muse); it doesn't have the word "Crazy" in it but it's along those lines. It has got some bad press, but I really like it.

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 11, 2013:

Silva, I know what you mean about the Gnarls Barkley song. It does kind of drive me crazy too! But I think that was the intent behind the song. I like it. I read that it was inspired by a song (Last Man Standing) in an old spaghetti western.

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 11, 2013:

Hi GG, I wasn't sure you would see my comment since it had been a while since you posted. Sorry about that! When I searched for the title you gave me, what came up was the song, G.L.O.W., and I believe it's the song you're referring to as it has the line, drive me crazy. Is the same song? I'm not familiar with all of their songs.

Silva Hayes from Spicewood, Texas on April 10, 2013:

Great hub. One of my latest favorites:

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley.

George Greene Jr. from California PA on April 10, 2013:

I did not know it had another title!!! But yes great song! What is the other title,BTW?

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on April 10, 2013:

Hey, thanks JP! I had fun putting this hub together, and should probably give it an update. I love these songs and enjoy listening to all of these artists. Thanks for reading.

@GG, I looked up the Smashing Pumpkins song you've listed, but it has a different title. That's probably why i didn't include it. A great song, thanks for posting.

JP Banks from Ohio on April 09, 2013:

This is awesome! I love all of the songs on your list. I guess I didn't realize just how many songs have the word 'crazy' in them!

George Greene Jr. from California PA on November 07, 2012:

great Hub! but you left out "YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY" by the SMASHING PUMPKINS! that was played at my wedding!

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on October 21, 2012:

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on November 27, 2011:

Patsy Cline's song is one of the timeless classics. There are some songs that are never meant to die out. She definitely had the voice to sing such an amazing song. Thanks Alladream, Danette and MM for the comments.

Movie Master from United Kingdom on November 27, 2011:

Patsy singing 'crazy' has to be one of my all time favourites, that's incredible that it's still one of the top 5 to be played on jukeboxes!

Great hub, voted up

Danette Watt from Illinois on August 24, 2011:

Yes, I guess love makes us a bit crazy. :}}

acaetnna from Guildford on April 08, 2011:

A tie between "Crazy" by KCI & JoJo and Brian McKnight's version of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love".

mannyrolando on January 23, 2011:

I love this hub. I voted for Madonna's crazy song. Also while reading this I couldn't stop thinking of something really crazy, I once listened to Latoya Jackson sing Patsy Cline's crazy song on live TV... which would be my second favorite crazy song! (Cline's version).

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on January 17, 2011:

thanks daravuthz for reading. I'm glad you enjoyed the hub!

thank you Docmo for stopping by and reading and leaving such a fun comment! I had a good time putting this one together. I love the Freddie Mercury song too, in fact, the more I hear it, the more I absolutely love his voice.

this crazy little thing called love~~

Mohan Kumar from UK on January 17, 2011:

This is the coolest idea for a hub I've seen for a while. My fav of course is the rocking and rolling 'This thing called love ..' by the awesome Freddie Mercury. Although I do like the others too. Awesome!

Thanks Alternative Prime! Crazy on You is truly a rock classic, I think. Her voice is so strong and she rocks that guitar! I'm glad you enjoyed reading and discovering. If you find anymore crazy love songs, be sure to let me know. Thanks!

@winsome, nice song, very nice. I've not heard of that group, but the song and video are beautiful. It's nice to know there are others who believe LOVE is the answer. hey, have I told you lately that I love you?? I did not know Van Morrison wrote that song! I thought it was Rod Stewart's. I've always loved that song since first hearing it. Now I've learned something new, thanks! xo

Winsome from Southern California by way of Texas on January 03, 2011:

Hello again, if you listen to Van's song it's better sung by Rod Stewart. On another note, I just ran across a song called "Crazy Enough" you might want to hear as at least an honorable mention.

All my best. =:)

Alternative Prime from > California on January 03, 2011:

Excellent List of "Crazy" songs rebekahELLE,

"Crazy on You" is actually my favorite in this category but I voted for second choice in the poll which is Aerosmith's "Crazy". Had fun reading and discovering some older songs we may have forgotten about.

Thanks for the complete "LIST"

rebekahELLE (author) from Tampa Bay on January 02, 2011:

Hi Pamela, nice to see you! I know, I didn't realize that so many artists have covered a few of these songs. I guess they're timeless in that sense. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.

Winsome, I so agree that Van Morrison has beautiful love songs. I'll have to listen again to 'Have I Told you..' so glad you enjoyed the songs. the holiday season was peaceful. Happy, healthy new year to you also! xoxo

don't forget to vote. :]

Winsome from Southern California by way of Texas on January 02, 2011:

Hi Rebekah, gotta go with Van Morrison although his "Have I Told You Lately that I Love You" is one of the most romantic songs ever. I enjoyed all of these, thanks for putting them all together. Hope you are having a wonderful holiday. =:)

Happy new year to you also as well as your family.

Elsie Nelson from Pacific Northwest, USA on January 02, 2011:

Oh, what a cool idea for a hub. I must say my favorite "Crazy" song is the one by Seal... "we're never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy." I love his voice and the cool melody in that song. You have some great choices, though.

Anyway, happy holidays and happy new year, Rebekah. May it be a prosperous and joyous one for you and yours.

Twilight Lawns from Norbury-sur-Mer, Surrey, England. U.K. on January 02, 2011:

You open my mind and increase my knowledge with your hubs. Thank you.
